Promoting patient empowerment in chronic care: A scoping review of key facilitating factors.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic conditions represent a growing global health challenge, requiring ongoing management in which patients play an active role. Although patient empowerment is increasingly recognized as important, practical insights on how to support it remain limited. This scoping review aims to identify key factors promoting patient empowerment in managing chronic conditions. METHODS: A literature search was conducted in Medline, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Scopus in March 2025. Studies were included if they described factors, strategies, i

Further evidence that painful and painless restless legs syndrome are contrasting phenotypes: a study of adult twins and their families.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to test in adults that painful and painless phenotypes of the restless legs syndrome (RLS) differed in genetic influence and associations with comorbidities. METHODS: Twins Research Australia administered questionnaires to adult twins and their families. Responders self-reported RLS (Cambridge-Hopkins diagnostic questionnaire) and painful and painless subsets, their history of doctor-confirmed iron deficiency, selected primary and chronic pain conditions, and medical conditions known to be associated with RLS. Association analyses were conducted using logistic regression,

Role of immune stimulation in the etiology of multiple myeloma: a case control study.

A hospital-based case-control study of 153 multiple myeloma (MM) cases and 459 controls was conducted to evaluate the hypothesis that chronic or frequent infections or allergic and autoimmune diseases might be of higher prevalence in individuals who develop MM. Information was obtained by direct interviews of subjects. Controls were matched to cases on age, sex, race, and hospital. "Immune-stimulating conditions" included chronic infections such as pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), prostatitis, rheumatoid arthritis and other collagen vascular diseases, allergies, bronchitis, tub

A Retrospective Medical Record Review of Adults with Non-Cancer Diagnoses Prescribed Medicinal Cannabis.

Research describing patients using medicinal cannabis and its effectiveness is lacking. We aimed to describe adults with non-cancer diagnoses who are prescribed medicinal cannabis via a retrospective medical record review and assess its effectiveness and safety. From 157 Australian records, most were female (63.7%; mean age 63.0 years). Most patients had neurological (58.0%) or musculoskeletal (24.8%) conditions. Medicinal cannabis was perceived beneficial by 53.5% of patients. Mixed-effects modelling and post hoc multiple comparisons analysis showed significant changes overtime for pain, bowe

Screaming Body and Silent Healthcare Providers: A Case Study with a Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivor.

Stressful early life experiences cause immune dysregulation across the lifespan. Despite the fact that studies have identified childhood sexual abuse (CSA) survivors as a particularly vulnerable group, only a few attempts have been made to study their lived-experience of the physical health consequences of CSA. The aim of this study was to explore a female CSA survivor's lived-experience of the physical health consequences of CSA and how she experienced the reactions of healthcare providers. Seven interviews were conducted with this 40-year-old woman, Anne, using a phenomenological research ap

Chronic fibrosing conditions in abdominal imaging.

Chronic fibrosing conditions of the abdomen are relatively poorly understood and involve varied and often multiple organ systems. At histopathologic analysis, they share the unifying features of proliferative fibrosis and chronic inflammation. Different conditions in this group are often found in association with each other and with other fibrosing conditions outside the abdomen. Some of the confusion about these conditions stems from their complex nomenclature, which includes a gamut of alternate terms and eponyms. Many of them can be categorized within two large subgroups: the fibromatoses a

Chronic heart failure part 1: pathophysiology, signs and symptoms.

Chronic heart failure is a common and complex clinical syndrome that results from impaired cardiac relaxation or contraction. Patients with chronic heart failure may experience multiple debilitating symptoms, such as fatigue, pain, and peripheral oedema. However, breathlessness may be considered the most debilitating symptom. This is the first of two articles on chronic heart failure, and outlines the pathophysiology of the condition, its causes, assessment, and signs and symptoms. Part 2 will discuss the treatment and management of the condition, including pharmacological strategies, device i

Apremilast in chronic recalcitrant erythema nodosum leprosum: a report of two cases.

Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is a severe immune reaction commonly encountered as a complication in patients with multibacillary leprosy. Management of chronic ENL in leprosy is challenging and necessitates the use of systemic immunosuppressants, including corticosteroids and thalidomide. No single drug is universally effective and most current therapeutic agents carry a significant risk of systemic toxicity. Apremilast is an orally effective phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitor with a potent immunomodulatory action and is clinically effective in inflammatory conditions like chronic plaque psoriasi
