A morphological study was carried out on 25 human embryos (3-60 mm CR) and 20 human fetuses (15-40 weeks). The anatomical analysis was completed by immunocytochemical studies of different markers of muscle differentiation (vimentin, desmin, titin and isoforms of the myosin heavy chains). A mesenchymal condensation forms around the urethra after the division of the cloaca (E.H. 12-15 mm CR). The m. pubo-rectalis appears in 20-30 mm CR embryos, following the opening of the anal membrane. Striated muscle fibers can be clearly differentiated at 15 weeks. At this time, the smooth muscle layer also

The aut horsdescribe the technique and the first results of para-sphincteric anaesthetic infiltrations of the striate sphincter of the urethra in paraplegics. These infiltrations may decrease, or even cause to disappear altogether, dysuria as long as the striate sphincter is alone responsible and that the straite sphincter muscle is not the process of fibrosis. In certain special cases, this simple technique may have a durable effect which makes it possible to avoid definitive procedures such as endoscopic or surgical section.

Obscurin, a giant protein of striated muscles, is emerging as an important player in a wide range of processes including myofibril assembly and maintenance, muscle protein degradation and intracellular signaling. Accordingly, obscurin participates to the mechanisms by which muscles adapt to physiological requirements or to pathological cues associated with cardiac and skeletal muscle diseases. Areas covered: The structure of the different obscurin isoforms identified so far, their tissue distribution and the most recent findings on obscurin in invertebrates and mammals will be reviewed. We wil

Maintenance of urinary continence is multifactorial and depends mainly on detrusor control and urethral closure function. The closure forces can be categorized as permanent closure forces active at rest, and adjunctive closure forces active during physical activities. The efficiency of these forces depends on the structural components in the urethral wall, the position of the bladder neck and proximal urethra, the periurethral striated muscles, and the pelvic floor muscles. By means of pudendal blockade and simultaneous recordings of pressure and cross-sectional area in the urethra, it has bee

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Esophageal peristalsis is a highly sophisticated function that involves the coordinated contraction and relaxation of striated and smooth muscles in a cephalocaudal fashion, under the control of central and peripheral neuronal mechanisms and a number of neurotransmitters. Esophageal peristalsis is determined by the balance of the intrinsic excitatory cholinergic, inhibitory nitrergic and post-inhibitory rebound excitatory output to the esophageal musculature.
RECENT FINDINGS: Dissociation of the longitudinal and circular muscle contractions characterizes different major eso

Five-year follow-up of a young male patient is presented. Total external ophthalmoplegia developed 1 week after an upper respiratory tract infection. After 3 years of the course, hyperthyreosis and clinical signs of thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy occurred. Hashimoto's thyroiditis and ultrastructural signs of mitochondrial damage of striated muscle were found by histological investigations. The paresis of the external ocular muscles recovered after long-term corticosteroid treatment. On the basis of clinical symptoms and histological results, the authors supposed that an immunological reacti

Lesions of sarcocystosis were studied in 14 calves necropsied between seven and 110 days after inoculation with 5000 to 25 million sporocysts of Sarcocystis hirsuta from cats. Calves developed fever, anemia, and diarrhea between 11 and 30 days after inoculation. The development of first generation meronts in arteries of small intestine, mesentery, and mesenteric lymph nodes seven to 25 days after inoculation was associated with vascular occlusion and necrosis of associated tissues. The development of second generation meronts in capillaries of striated muscles 15 to 23 days after inoculation w

The three-dimensional structure of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), transverse (T)-axial tubular system and mitochondria in various muscles was examined by means of ultra-high resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after removal of the cytoplasmic matrices and myofilaments by the aldehyde-osmium-DMSO-osmium procedure. The striated muscles reviewed and presented are twitch and slow fibers of the frog, twitch and slow fibers of the chicken, twitch extrafusal fibers and intrafusal fibers of the rat, and cardiac muscle fibers of the rat and dog. In all of these striated muscle fibers, T-tub

We describe a 49-year-old man who presented to hospital with unstable angina and who underwent emergency coronary artery bypass grafting. During the surgical procedure, an incidental anterior mediastinal mass was discovered. Histological examination of this mediastinal mass revealed a thymolipoma containing numerous polygonal, striated myoid cells that were immunoreactive for desmin, muscle-specific actin and myoglobin. Electron microscopy demonstrated numerous Z band structures confirming myoid differentiation. Even though the appearance of myoid cells in thymolipoma may be alarming, this tum

Muscular contraction is a fundamental phenomenon in all animals; without it life as we know it would be impossible. The basic mechanism in muscle, including heart muscle, involves the interaction of the protein filaments myosin and actin. Motility in all cells is also partly based on similar interactions of actin filaments with non-muscle myosins. Early studies of muscle contraction have informed later studies of these cellular actin-myosin systems. In muscles, projections on the myosin filaments, the so-called myosin heads or cross-bridges, interact with the nearby actin filaments and, in a m

CONTEXT: Tunga penetrans is a flea that burrows into human skin, causing the disease tungiasis. Although the parasite is not endemic in the United States, patients may present with this disease upon returning from tropical locales. Histologic sections contain a variety of flea parts that may present a diagnostic dilemma for pathologists unfamiliar with this disease.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the typical histologic features of T penetrans in biopsies from patients with tungiasis.
METHODS: We reviewed biopsy specimens from 7 patients with tungiasis and sought 8 distinct structures: the exoskelet

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma is a rare dermal lesion which was first described in 1986 as "striated muscle hamartoma". It usually develops in the head and neck region of newborns. We report a 38-day-old girl with a congenital skin tag in the perianal region. Physical examination did not reveal any congenital abnormalities or other dermal lesions. Histopathological examination showed a hamartoma with disorganized skeletal muscle fibers. The differential diagnosis includes skin tag, accessory tragus and soft fibroma. Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma differs from the listed lesions

A pathological study was conducted on four patients with nephroblastoma associated with aniridia. The age at diagnosis. was one year in three cases and 4 years in one case. Chromosomal analysis was performed in three cases, and showed 11p13 deletion in all. Each nephroblastoma consisted of metanephric blastemal, epithelial, and mesenchymal cells. All the tumors were centrilobar, and in one case an additional polypoid tumor grew into the renal pelvis. Histological examination showed conspicuous heterotopic cells, such as striated muscle and adipose tissue. Striated muscle was seen in all four c

The rhabdosphincter of the male urethra and its innervation are still a subject of controversy. Essentially, two concepts of its anatomy can be found in the literature. Some authors describe the rhabdosphincter as part of the urogenital diaphragm caudal to the prostate, others as a striated muscle that extends from the base of the bladder to the "urogenital diaphragm." In anatomic histological studies, the rhabdosphincter and its innervation were examined by means of anatomical dissections and serial anatomical as well as histological sections of 19 male pelves, including 8 fetal specimens. Dystonin (DST), which encodes cytoskeletal linker proteins, expresses three tissue-selective isoforms: neural DST-a, muscular DST-b, and epithelial DST-e. DST mutations cause different disorders, including hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy 6 (HSAN-VI) and epidermolysis bullosa simplex; however, etiology of the muscle phenotype in DST-related diseases has been unclear. Because DST-b contains all of the DST-a-encoding exons, known HSAN-VI mutations could affect both DST-a and DST-b isoforms. To investigate the specific function of DST-b in striated muscles, we generated a Dst-b-specifi

SignificanceFatigue is one of the most common symptoms of cancer and its treatment, manifested in the clinic through weakness and exercise intolerance. These side effects not only compromise patient's quality of life (QOL), but also diminish physical activity, resulting in limited treatment and increased morbidity.Recent advancesOxidative stress, mediated by cancer or chemotherapeutic agents, is an underlying mechanism of the drug-induced toxicity. Nontargeted tissues, such as striated muscle, are severely affected by oxidative stress during chemotherapy, leading to toxicity and dysfunction.Cr
