Cutaneous infestation by the human botfly, Dermatobia hominis, results in furuncular myiasis. This condition is endemic to the forested areas of Mexico, Central and South America. However, because of widespread travel, furuncular myiasis has become more common in North America. Misdiagnosis and mismanagement can occur owing to limited awareness of the condition outside endemic areas. To our knowledge, there is only a single report of botfly myiasis in the recent emergency medicine literature, which is surprising since the emergency department is likely to be the place many patients with this c…

Oral Myiasis is a rare pathology in humans and is associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurating lesions, severe halitosis and others conditions. The treatment is a mechanical removal of the maggots one by one but a systemic treatment with Ivermectin, a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic, have been used for treatment for oral myiasis. We present a case report of a 32-year-old man indigent, alcohol-dependent with an extensive necrotic area and acute swelling in upper lip and fetid odor. The patient's management included topic use of gentian violet, oral therapy with iverm…

UNLABELLED: Although myiasis or hypodermiasis is a parasitic disease that theoretically has practically been eradicated, a new case has recently been reported in Lower Normandy, in a bovine husbandry region.
CASE REPORT: A seven-year-old-girl was hospitalized in November 1998 for an edema of variable size on the right eyelid, which was not painful and non-inflammatory, with accompanying ptosis. A number of subcutaneous nodules were found on the forehead above the right eye socket. The right eye itself was unaffected. The symptoms had evolved over a ten-day period. Further examination did not …

Oral myiasis is a rare condition caused by the invasion of tissues by larvae of flies. A case of gingival myiasis is presented in a 12-year-old boy with learning disability. The patient was unaware of the lesion, although it produced a swelling partially covering the teeth. The lesion was treated with ether, which forced the larvae out, and irrigated with warm saline solution. Follow-up examination revealed complete subsidence and healing of the lesion.

This case reports an unusual finding of fly larvae infesting the maxillary hard and soft tissues (myiasis) following a chronic suppurating infection of dental origin in an Afro-Caribbean male. It also highlights the future therapeutic uses of such organisms in general medical, and possibly even dental, surgery.

A case of mixed semi-specific cutaneous myiasis produced by larvae from Calliphora vicina Rob.-Desv. and Lucilia sericata Mg, in their third development stage, is described, as the first case in humans, although there is a precedent described in domestic animals. Main taxonomic characteristics and diagnostic features of the parasites are discussed, together with the implications of their biology in the observed clinical case, discussing, as well the prophylaxis and therapy.
