[Lymphatic metastasis revealing a calcitonin-secreting extrathyroid carcinoma].

We report a case of right sus-clavicular lymph nodes metastasis which revealed a calcitonin secreting carcinoma in a 36 years old woman. Any tumor has been noted in the completely included thyroid gland. There was many lymph nodes metastasis in the right mediastinal removal. A pulmonary origin neuroendocrine carcinoma hyposthesis has been evoked. The outcome proved to be quickly fatal with cerebral metastasis occurrence. Extrathyroid calcitonin secreting carcinomas are rare. Then the discussion was founded on the diagnosis process in the face of hypercalcitoninemia, and on the calcitonin secre

Multiple Distinct Neoplasms in a North African Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus).

This paper describes the clinical and pathological features of 4 different tumors, located in the integumentary, digestive, and endocrine systems, presenting in a North African hedgehog (Atelerix algirus). A 3.5-year-old female hedgehog was presented with a cutaneous mass on the right flank. The lesion consisted of a well-differentiated dermal mast cell tumor with no recurrence and metastasis after complete surgical excision. Six months later, the hedgehog developed a mass in the left lower jaw, lethargy, anorexia, and progressive weight loss. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed swe

Intriguing Encounter: Unveiling Squamous Cell Carcinoma Lung with Rare Bilateral Renal and Pituitary Metastasis on [18F]-FDG PET/CT.

Metastases from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung typically occur in the brain, liver, adrenal glands, bone, and regional lymph nodes. It is exceedingly uncommon to encounter multiple rare sites of metastasis from a single primary neoplasm. Herein, we describe a case of a 44-year-old male diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma lung with pituitary and renal metastasis detected on 18F-FDG (Fluorodeoxyglucose) PET/CT. 18F-FDG PET/CT is the standard of care and is an integral part of the clinical staging of patients with lung cancer. According to published literature, the incidence of symptomati

Amelanotic metastatic gastric malignant melanoma: a case report.

Melanoma is a malignant form of cutaneous cancer with an increasing incidence since 1970s, accounting for nearly 75% of the death related to skin cancer especially in western countries. Highest recurrence and mortality were observed for the subtype with distal metastasis, demonstrating poor outcomes. However, high incidence of gastrointestinal metastasis of malignant melanoma is frequently misdiagnosed due to lack of specific clinical manifestations, especially for the rare observed cases presented amelanotic appearance, accounting for about 2% of all metastatic cases. In the present study, we

Surgical stabilization of pathological neoplastic fractures.

The most important factor to consider in deciding between treatment options in the management of metastatic bone disease is the level of the patient's dysfunction and pain. Severe dysfunction or pain demands a treatment that predictably leads to a quick resumption of the painless activities of daily living. A treatment that predictably will restore function in months may seem reasonable in patients with a normal remaining life span, but is untenable if those months represent a high percentage of remaining life span, as they do in metastatic disease afflicted patients. The treating physician ne

Lytic bone lesion as the first manifestation of late recurrence of gastric cancer.

The incidence of gastric cancer has declined worldwide, it is the second most common cancer worldwide and two thirds of these occurs in developing countries. In Peru, this neoplasm, has one of the highest incidence and mortality rates. The main sites of gastric adenocarcinoma metastasis are the liver and lung; In contrast, bone metastasis are an uncommon finding up to 0.9 to 2% of patients and is associated with an ominous prognosis. We present the case of a 48-year-old female patient diagnosed with gastric cancer treated surgically and with regular controls. 5 years later, she was admitted du

Thymic carcinoma metastasize to the small intestine: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Thymic carcinoma is a rare mediastinal neoplasm with a high malignant potential. It often shows pleural invasion and distant metastasis. The metastasis of thymic carcinoma to the small intestine is rarely reported and difficult to distinguish from other gastrointestinal tract tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: An elderly man presented with lower abdominal pain for 2 months. Abdominal CT showed a mass communicated with the small intestinal lumen. After radical resection of the small intestinal tumor, resected specimens showed moderately differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma with lymph nod

Case report: Clinical analysis and literature review of five cases of metastatic solid pseudopapillary tumor of the pancreas.

BACKGROUND: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas (SPN) is a rare and low-grade malignant tumor. It mainly occurs in women of reproductive age, accounting for approximately 1-3% of all pancreatic tumors. SPN has a low incidence rate and is difficult to diagnose before surgery. Some cases may show local infiltration, but distant metastasis rarely occurs. Currently, there is no standardized treatment protocol for SPN. PATIENT AND METHODS: We have collected clinical data from 5 patients with solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) of the pancreas who presented with distant metastasis at ou

Canine bile duct carcinoma.

Twenty-four adenocarcinomas of the hepatobiliary system were found among 110 primary hepatic neoplasms: 22 of these were intrahepatic, one involved the extrahepatic bile duct and one the gall bladder. Histologically, 10 intrahepatic neoplasms were classified as cholangiocarcinoma, and 12 as bile duct cystadenocarcinoma. The former were characterized by tubular structures lined by anaplastic cuboidal or columnar cells with diffuse fibrous stroma, and the latter by multiple cystic structures with papillary and solid areas. Half the bile duct cystadenocarcinomas showed benign cysts and transition

Successfully treated lingual tonsillar metastasis from bronchial adenocarcinoma.

Tonsillar metastasis from neoplasms, including lung cancer, are extremely rare, and the prognosis for patients with tonsillar metastases is rather poor. We herein describe a case of long-term survival following radiation for lingual tonsillar metastasis from a bronchial adenocarcinoma. A 39-year-old male was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the right lung and was surgically treated. Four months after surgery, a mass arising from the lingual tonsil was noted at the root of the tongue and was pathologically diagnosed as metastasis from lung cancer. In addition, a computed tomography scan reveale

Hemangiopericytoma. An analysis of 106 cases.

A series of 106 cases of hemangiopericytoma was analyzed. The neoplasms occurred principally in adults (median age, 45 years), were deep seated, and were most common in the thigh (27 cases) and the pelvic retroperitoneum (26 cases). A painless mass was the first symptom in 96 of the patients. The median size of the excised tumors was 6.5 cm. Surgical removal of the tumor was often complicated by hemorrhage because of marked dilatation of the vascular bed in the vicinity of the neoplasm, probably as the result of rapid exchange of blood from the arterial to the venous circulation within the tum

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type, of the parotid gland: a case report, review of literature, and proposed algorithmic approach to salivary gland clear cell neoplasms in fine-needle aspiration biopsies.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), clear cell type, is a commonly encountered metastatic tumor that can present at unusual anatomic sites many years after the primary tumor resection. Noncutaneous metastasis to the parotid gland is unusual; however, a number of cases of parotid RCC metastasis have been reported. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is regularly utilized during the evaluation of salivary gland lesions, where it has a high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy; however, the identification and definitive diagnosis of primary and metastatic clear cell neoplasms is a potential diagnostic

Correlation of N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 subcellular localization and lymph node metastases of colorectal neoplasms.

In colorectal neoplasms, N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 (NDRG1) is a primarily cytoplasmic protein, but it is also expressed on the cell membrane and in the nucleus. NDRG1 is involved in various stages of tumor development in colorectal cancer, and it is possible that the different subcellular localizations may determine the function of NDRG1 protein. Here, we attempt to clarify the characteristics of NDRG1 protein subcellular localization during the progression of colorectal cancer. We examined NDRG1 expression in 49 colorectal cancer patients in cancerous, non-cancerous, and corresponding

Pituitary metastasis of choriocarcinoma: A case report.

Choriocarcinoma is an aggressive obstetric or gynecological neoplasm with a high malignant potential. It is a form of gestational trophoblastic disease and often secondary to hydatidiform mole, and intrauterine or ectopic pregnancy. Choriocarcinoma has a proclivity to metastasize to the lung, vagina, pelvis or liver in over 50% of patients, which always occurs in the early stage of the disease. With an appropriate amount of chemotherapy, the tumor may be treated effectively. However, pituitary metastasis of choriocarcinoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, no cases of choriocarc

Metastatic Hürthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid presenting as ulcerated scrotum nodules.

Cutaneous metastasis from Hürthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid is an extremely rare phenomenon. As far as we can determine, there has been only a single case documented. Our patient, a 68-year old man with a history of Hürthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid, had cutaneous nodules in the scrotum and right chin. Histologic and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic Hürthle cell carcinoma of the thyroid. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of scrotal skin metastasis. This case emphasizes the importance of thorough clinicopathologic correla

Pancreatic Extraskeletal Osteosarcoma Metastasizing to the Scalp.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a rare mesenchymal soft-tissue neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1% of all soft-tissue sarcomas. Over 70% of these malignant tumor progress to local recurrence and metastasis. It commonly metastasizes to the lungs, lymph nodes, bone, and skin and has a poor survival outcome. Cutaneous metastasis is exceedingly rare and known to be a sign of widespread metastases. We present a 57-year-old woman who presented with a rapidly growing protuberant mass on the scalp that was finally diagnosed as metastatic ESOS from a primary pancreatic ESOS. To our knowled

Tongue metastasis from carcinoma of the rectum.

A case report of a patient with carcinoma of the rectum with metastasis to the tongue clinically mimicking a primary tongue neoplasm is described. The patient presented with an ulcer in the tongue three years after undergoing an anterior resection for a Dukes C carcinoma of the rectum. Other asymptomatic metastatic lesions were discovered only after the histology report suggested that the tongue ulcer biopsy was metastatic in origin. Metastatic tumour to the tongue is extremely rare and often occurs at a late stage, when there is disseminated disease. We are not aware of any reported case of t

Carcinoid tumor of the larynx. A critical review of the literature.

Typical carcinoid neoplasms of the larynx are extremely rare tumors. The total number of known and documented cases is likely no more than 13. The neoplasm mainly affects males at an average age of 58 years and appears grossly as a polypoid or sessile submucosal nodule with an average 1.8 cm in size. Their predominant location is the supraglottis with the arytenoid and the aryepiglottic fold being the most frequent sites. Histologically, they are characterized by organoid architecture, uniform cellular features and lack of pleomorphism, necrosis and mitosis. Typical laryngeal carcinoids are le

Dual carcinoid tumors of Meckel's diverticulum presenting as metastasis in an inguinal hernia sac: case report with literature review.

Neoplasms arising in Meckel's diverticulum or involving hernia sacs are rare. The authors present a unique case of two asymptomatic carcinoid tumors arising in a Meckel's diverticulum, which were discovered because of microscopic metastasis in a grossly unremarkable inguinal hernia sac. This article describes the clinical and morphologic features of this unusual case, reviews the topic of neoplasms involving hernia sacs and Meckel's diverticula, and includes a brief review of immunocytochemical findings in carcinoid tumors.

Submandibular and sublingual salivary gland involvement in adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm that presents as an indolent but aggressive neoplasm. AdCC histogenesis is linked to the intercalated ducts of the salivary glands, equally affecting the major and minor glands. AdCC is associated with distant metastasis, most commonly to the lungs, and a high recurrence rate. AdCC accounts for 4.2% of all tumors. About 55% of all reported cases affect the submandibular gland, and around 50% of AdCC cases occur in the minor salivary glands. The present review describes a case of AdCC which presented a single nodular swellin
