Recurrence and increased proliferation rate of a solitary fibrous tumor in the central nervous system--case report and review of the literature.

Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) were at first estimated as rare benign tumors which can be cured by total resection. To date, only 37 patients with intracranial SFTs have been reported. Therefore, the natural history of this tumor entity needs more enlightenment. The authors report a case of a 77-year-old female in whom a SFT with infiltration of the transversal sinus was subtotally resected. After a short time, interval tumor recurrence was seen, 2 years and 6 months later second surgery was performed. Immunohistologically, in both specimens typical features for SFT with positivity f

[Solitary fibrous tumor. Two additional cases with urologic implications].

Solitary fibrous tumour is a well defined pathological entity originally described as a tumour of the pleura, but the occurrence of this neoplasm has increasingly been described at other sites. At present the development of these tumours is recognized as possible in virtually all anatomical sites. The rarity of this type of pathology has not allowed up to the present time clarification of the histogenesis, clinical behaviour, treatment and prognosis of these tumours. Differential diagnosis becomes important, especially in extra-thoracic sites so as not to mistake them for much more aggressive

Solitary Fibrous Tumors of the Submandibular Gland: A Case Report.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are uncommon neoplasms that arise from the pleura. Although they can appear in various extrathoracic areas, they are uncommon in the submandibular gland. This paper reports a 37-year-old woman with a spherical, hypoechogenic mass measuring 13 × 37 mm and having a regular boundary on the left side of the submandibular gland. The lesion was surgically excised with a less than 1 mm margin. Following histopathological and immunohistochemical examination, the diagnosis of SFT was confirmed. Staining showed that the lesion was negative for vimentin, AE3/CKAE1, calponin

Giant Adrenal Pseudocysts: An Enigma for Surgeons.

Adrenal pseudocysts are cystic lesions arising within the adrenal gland enclosed by a fibrous connective tissue wall that lacks lining cells. They can attain a huge size and pose a diagnostic challenge with a broad range of differentials including benign and malignant neoplasms. There are only a few small case series and case reports describing these lesions. We report a series of five patients who presented with "indeterminate" abdominal cystic lesions and were later on found to have adrenal pseudocyst. Four out of five patients presented with non-specific abdominal symptoms, and one patient

Retroperitoneal Cystic Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma Mimicking a Psoas Abscess.

Primary neoplasms in the psoas muscle including schwannoma and soft tissue sarcoma with secondary cystic degeneration are rare entities. They are difficult to distinguish from psoas abscess purely based on radiological findings. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in the retroperitoneum is an uncommon entity in contrast to liposarcoma and leiomyosarcoma. Psoas abscess is a common infection in the retroperitoneum, especially in regions where tuberculosis is endemic. In the current case, the patient presented with gradually progressive lower abdominal pain and raised erythrocyte sedimentation r

Acinic cell carcinoma on the lower lip resembling a mucocele.

A 64-year-old woman presented with a 2-week history of an asymptomatic mass involving the lower lip. Histopathological examination showed a well-circumscribed tumour composed of many lobules separated by thin, fibrous connective tissue. Individual lobules were composed of round or polyhedral tumour cells, which had a characteristic finely granular and vacuolated cytoplasm and eccentric hyperchromatic nuclei. Positive staining was observed with Periodic acid-Shiff, and immunohistochemistry for cytokeratin, alpha-1 antitrypsin, and S-100 protein resulting in a final diagnosis of acinic cell carc

Sclerosing extramedullary hematopoietic tumor.

A 73-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain, weakness, and weight loss. Pertinent medical history included myelofibrosis, severe anemia, and lumpectomy for breast cancer. Computed tomography showed marked splenomegaly and numerous soft tissue masses in the mesentery. Excisional biopsy of the mass showed an encapsulated tumor with yellow-tan nodular growth pattern. Microscopically, the tumor was characterized by the presence of bizarre giant cells in background of prominent dense fibrous stroma. The atypical giant cells were positive for FVIII antibody staining. Many other cells were posi

Brain metastases of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma presenting as an acute cerebral hemorrhage.

Intracranial metastases from malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) are rare, particularly with associated hemorrhage. This article reports one case and presents a review of the literature on this topic. A 55-year-old man presented with acute drowsiness, aphasia and right homonymous hemianopsia and hemiparesis. The first CT scan showed a left occipitoparietal hematoma and the second one, nodular, contrast-enhanced lesions. He had been previously operated on soft tissues MFH. Lung metastases developed subsequently. A craniotomy was performed with evacuation of the hematoma and total gross resecti

Tissue maturation correlating to clinical manifestations in juvenile angiofibroma.

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign tumor that affects young male patients and shows a characteristic development from its origin. It is not a true neoplasm, but shows features of vascular processes, developing into a more fibrous condition. The aim of this study was to correlate the clinical manifestations and the histologic findings of the tumor. METHODS: Thirty-six patients without previous treatment were studied. We correlated the incidence and duration of the clinical manifestations (nasal obstruction, epistaxis, nasal and/or pharyngeal tumor, and facial def

GAB1::ABL1 fusions define a distinctive soft tissue neoplasm, with variable perineurial differentiation, and a predilection for children and young adults.

Although well known as a fusion partner in hematological malignancies, fusion genes involving the ABL proto-oncogene 1 (ABL1), mapping to chromosomal region 9q34.12, have only been anecdotally reported in five soft tissue tumors. These neoplasms have been variously reported as perineurioma, angiofibroma, and solitary fibrous tumor, and all have harbored a GAB1::ABL1 gene fusion; however, the nosology and clinicopathological characteristics of soft tissue tumors carrying this rare fusion have not been delineated. We herein describe eight tumors containing the GAB1::ABL1 fusion and review previo

Marginal Resection Is Appropriate for Radical Surgery for Solitary Fibrous Tumours of the Pelvis: A High Volume Pelvic Exenteration Centre Experience.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare soft-tissue neoplasms with variable metastatic potential and a tendency to exhibit more aggressive behaviour in the pelvis. This study evaluated the outcomes of pelvic SFT resections using a marginal resection approach at a specialist sarcoma and pelvic oncology centre. Eighteen patients underwent resection of pelvic SFTs between 1994 and 2025. Fifteen (83%) cases required resection of adjacent pelvic structures, of which three (17%) patients underwent total pelvic exenteration to achieve complete resection or to facilitate surgical access. Management of a Borderline Brenner Tumor of the Ovary in a Premenopausal Woman in Northern Tanzania. A Rare Case Report and Review of the Current Literature.

Brenner tumors are rare ovarian neoplasms that are typically small and unilateral. Most cases are benign; less than 5% of all Brenner tumors are borderline or proliferative. Brenner tumors originate from the follicular epithelium and consist of ovarian transitional cells surrounded by fibrous tissue. Here we present a case of a 49-year-old premenopausal woman from Northern Tanzania. This patient presented to our facility with acute abdominal pain. She also reported abdominal distention which was first noticed 12 months prior to presentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified a 21 × 1

Large Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) of the penis- a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are very rare spindle cell neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with largely benign course of disease. Genital SFT's can be managed providing excellent functional and psychological outcomes by timely intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the largest and possibly the second only reported case of penile SFT in a 34 year male presenting with a gradually increasing perineal mass with clinically normal appearing phallus. MRI revealed a 9.8 × 3.2 cm soft tissue mass arising from left corpora cavernosae, the mass was excised en-bloc via a perineal approach

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Mimicking a Cavitary Lesion in the Lung: A Case Report and a Comprehensive Literature Review.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are a group of soft tissue neoplasms with a predilection for the lungs and abdominopelvic cavity, characterized by a mixture of fasciitis-like, compact spindle cells, hypocellular fibrous histologic patterns, and distinctive molecular features. Due to their unspecified symptoms and non-specific radiologic presentation, the histopathologic and immunohistochemical analysis of a biopsy specimen is crucial for the diagnosis. We present a case of a 30-year-old man with intermittent hemoptysis diagnosed with a pulmonary IMT. We aim to review the literature

Ossifying fibroma: an uncommon differential diagnosis for T2-hypointense sinonasal masses.

Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that occurs most commonly in the mandible of female patients. In rare cases, it affects the nasal cavity. The magnetic resonance imaging features may vary depending on the amount of fibrous and bony tissue in its composition. In these tumors, T2-hypointensity is a feature described in the peripheral ossified areas of the lesion, but it may present diffusely, especially when the degree of ossification is extensive. In this scenario, this particular characteristic on T2-weighted imaging is superimposable to the commonly described appearance of o

Radiation management of a late thoracic metastasis from an intracranial solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are a rare soft tissue sarcoma. We present a case of a male patient with an SFT of the right posterior fossa, with a late metastasis to the right lung and chest wall identified 18 years later.A small number of late metastases of SFTs have previously been reported. Metastases are typically managed surgically, although there is limited evidence suggesting that radiotherapy may be effective for primary SFTs.In this case, the patient declined treatment for his metastasised cancer for 5 years. He then only agreed to radiation treatment without surgery, which uniquely

Ossifying Fibroma of Non-odontogenic Origin: A Fibro-osseous Lesion in the Craniofacial Skeleton to be (Re-)considered.

In the cranio-facial skeleton, a heterogeneous group of well characterized fibro-osseous lesions can be distinguished. Whereas fibrous dysplasia can affect any skeletal bone, ossifying fibroma and cemento-osseous dysplasia exclusively develop in the cranio-facial region, with most subtypes restricted to the tooth bearing areas of the jaws. Herein we present a series of 20 fibro-osseous lesions that developed mostly in the frontal bone and in the mandible, presenting as expansile intramedullary tumors with a unique histologic appearance and an indolent clinical course. We provide evidence that

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor--an IgG4-related disorder?

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor (nodular periorchitis, inflammatory pseudotumor of the spermatic cord) is a rare, benign condition of unknown etiology characterized by solitary or multiple intrascrotal nodules composed of dense fibrous tissue with a variable, sometimes sparse inflammatory infiltrate. Based on certain similarities to other fibroinflammatory disorders characterized by infiltrates of IgG4-expressing plasma cells and recently subsumed under the heading of IgG4-mediated diseases, we investigated the plasma cell distribution and immunoglobulin isotypes in three cases of paratesti

Plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor.

Plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor is an uncommon mesenchymal tumor that can cause difficulty in diagnosis and surgical management. On clinical and histologic examination, these tumors can potentially be misdiagnosed as sebaceous/epidermal cysts. We report a case of plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor in a young female, which on initial clinical evaluation was diagnosed as sebaceous cyst. The tumor was deeply invasive, with positive margins on two excisional biopsy specimens. The importance of recognition of this entity, potential pitfalls and prognosis are discussed and the literature is reviewed.
