Artificial intelligence-based non-invasive bilirubin prediction for neonatal jaundice using 1D convolutional neural network.

Neonatal jaundice, characterized by elevated bilirubin levels causing yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes in newborns, is a critical condition requiring accurate and timely diagnosis. This study proposes a novel approach using 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (1DCNN) for estimating bilirubin levels from RGB, HSV, LAB, and YCbCr color channels extracted from infant images. Initially, each color channel is treated as a time series input to a 1DCNN model, facilitating bilirubin level prediction through regression analysis. Subsequently, RGB feature maps are combined with those derived from

Improving the performance of the echinococcosis diagnosis model based on serum Raman spectroscopy via the integration of convolutional neural network and support vector machine.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic parasitic disease characterized by its insidious nature and severe health impacts. Rapid and accurate screening is crucial for subsequent treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that Raman spectroscopy combined with machine learning or deep learning can be used for rapid diagnosis of echinococcosis, but there remains room for improving diagnostic accuracy. Therefore, this study proposes combining a convolutional neural network with a support vector machine (CNN-SVM) for the analysis of serum Raman spectra, aiming to achieve high-accuracy classification of ech

DCM-Net: dual-encoder CNN-Mamba network with cross-branch fusion for robust medical image segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Medical image segmentation is a critical task for the early detection and diagnosis of various conditions, such as skin cancer, polyps, thyroid nodules, and pancreatic tumors. Recently, deep learning architectures have achieved significant success in this field. However, they face a critical trade-off between local feature extraction and global context modeling. METHOD: To address this limitation, we present DCM-Net, a dual-encoder architecture that integrates pretrained CNN layers with Visual State Space (VSS) blocks through a Cross-Branch Feature Fusion Module (CBFFM). A Decoder

Interpreting convolutional neural network explainability for head-and-neck cancer radiotherapy organ-at-risk segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have emerged to reduce clinical resources and standardize auto-contouring of organs-at-risk (OARs). Although CNNs perform adequately for most patients, understanding when the CNN might fail is critical for effective and safe clinical deployment. However, the limitations of CNNs are poorly understood because of their black-box nature. Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) can expose CNNs' inner mechanisms for classification. Here, we investigate the inner mechanisms of CNNs for segmentation and explore a novel, computational approach to a-pri

Automatic detection of orthodontically induced external root resorption based on deep convolutional neural networks using CBCT images.

Orthodontically-induced external root resorption (OIERR) is among the most common risks in orthodontic treatment. Traditional OIERR diagnosis is limited by subjective judgement as well as cumbersome manual measurement. The research aims to develop an intelligent detection model for OIERR based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, thus providing auxiliary diagnosis support for orthodontists. Six pretrained CNN architectures were adopted and 1717 CBCT slices were used for training to construct OIERR detection models. The performance of

FracNeXt: Enhancing visual representation learning in sequence models with fractal wavelets.

Recent applications of sequence models, such as Transformers and Mamba, in the vision domain have demonstrated promising performance. However, the processes of patch token extraction and token mixing inevitably result in the irreversible loss of spatial information. Existing sequence models for vision tasks rely heavily on residual connections to mitigate this issue, yet they overlook the limitations of residual connections in maintaining frequency stability. To address these challenges, we propose Multiple Wavelet Patch Partition (MWPP), a method that extracts patch tokens while preserving th

Edges are all you need: Potential of medical time series analysis on complete blood count data with graph neural networks.

PURPOSE: Machine learning is a powerful tool to develop algorithms for clinical diagnosis. However, standard machine learning algorithms are not perfectly suited for clinical data since the data are interconnected and may contain time series. As shown for recommender systems and molecular property predictions, Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) may represent a powerful alternative to exploit the inherently graph-based properties of clinical data. The main goal of this study is to evaluate when GNNs represent a valuable alternative for analyzing large clinical data from the clinical routine on the ex

Recurrent Neural Networks for Mexican Sign Language Interpretation in Healthcare Services.

In Mexico, the Deaf community faces persistent communication barriers that restrict their integration and access to essential services, particularly in healthcare. Even though approximately two million individuals use Mexican Sign Language (MSL) as their primary form of communication, technological tools for supporting effective interaction remain limited. While recent research in sign-language recognition has led to important advances for several languages, work focused on MSL, particularly for healthcare scenarios, remains scarce. To address this gap, this study introduces a health-oriented

Interpretable Multiscale Convolutional Neural Network for Classification and Feature Visualization of Weak Raman Spectra of Biomolecules at Cell Membranes.

Raman spectroscopy in biological applications faces challenges due to complex spectra, characterized by peaks of varying widths and significant biological background noise. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely used for spectrum classification due to their ability to capture local peak features. In this study, we introduce a multiscale CNN designed to detect weak biomolecule signals and differentiate spectra with features that cannot be statistically distinguished. The approach is further enhanced by a new visualization technique tailored for multiscale spectral analysis, providing c

Machine learning approaches for predicting craniofacial anomalies with graph neural networks.

This study explores the use of machine learning algorithms, including traditional approaches and graph neural networks (GNNs), to predict certain diseases by analyzing protein-protein interactions. Protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are complex, multifaceted, and sometimes ever-changing. Therefore, analyzing PPIs and making predictions based on them present significant challenges to traditional computational techniques. However, machine learning, particularly GNNs, with their powerful ability to identify complex patterns within large, convoluted datasets, emerge as compelling and revolutionar

The dynamics of hepatitis B virus transmission using a stochastic differential model and feed forward neural network approach.

Hepatitis B transmission is influenced by environmental variability, immune response and vaccination, making its spread inherently stochastic, while the integration of stochastic modeling with machine learning is particularly important for representing disease uncertainty in varied surroundings. We present a hybrid innovative framework that combines a stochastic epidemiological model with a feed-forward neural network to study hepatitis B virus (HBV) dynamics. We show the well-posedness by establishing the existence of solutions with uniqueness, and analyze extinction and persistence of the di

Instability and performance limits of convolutional neural networks on non-sequential medical tabular data: an empirical investigation.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have shown outstanding performance in image recognition, but their application to non-sequential tabular data remains debatable. This study investigates the architectural sensitivity of CNNs when applied to non-sequential medical datasets and compares their performance with multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) under various structural settings. Three publicly available medical tabular datasets were used: integrative clinical and CT feature dataset (iCTCF), Breast Cancer Wisconsin Diagnostic (BCWD), and UCI Heart Disease (UCI-HD). We systematically varied the numb

A DenseNet-based Abnormal Ventricular Potentials Onset Delineation: A Feasibility Study.

Abnormal ventricular potentials (AVPs) are fractionated and complex electrograms (EGMs), typically associated with slow conduction areas in the myocardium. As such, in ventricular tachycardia (VT), their identification supports the localization of the myocardial areas sustaining the arrhythmia in the electroanatomic mapping. Their latency can be related to their spatial localization, suggesting the entrance or the exit of a reentry pathway. In this work, we explored a novel approach to delineate the onset of the pathological deflections in AVPs. For this preliminary study, an expert cardiologi

A Complex Heterogeneous Network Model of Disease Regulated by Noncoding RNAs: A Case Study of Unstable Angina Pectoris.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important types of noncoding RNAs, and there is a lack of holistic and systematic understanding of the functions they play in disease. We proposed a research strategy, including two parts network analysis and network modelling, to analyze, model, and predict the regulatory network of miRNAs from a network perspective, using unstable angina pectoris as an example. In the network analysis section, we proposed the WGCNA & SimCluster method using both correlation and similarity to find hub miRNAs, and validation on two datasets showed better results than the methods using co
