Clinical and neurophysiological features of tick paralysis.

The clinical and neurophysiological findings in six Australian children with generalized tick paralysis are described. Paralysis is usually caused by the mature female of the species Ixodes holocyclus. It most frequently occurs in the spring and summer months but can be seen at any time of year. Children aged 1-5 years are most commonly affected. The tick is usually found in the scalp, often behind the ear. The typical presentation is a prodrome followed by the development of an unsteady gait, and then ascending, symmetrical, flaccid paralysis. Early cranial nerve involvement is a feature, par

Urodynamic and neurophysiologic evaluation of patients with diastematomyelia.

Diastematomyelia is a form of an occult dysraphism, which can present with lower urinary tract dysfunction. We present the findings in 21 patients with diastematomyelia evaluated at the Children's Hospital in Boston. Seventy-six percent of the patients were female. Eighty-six per cent had a cutaneous lesion present overlying the spine. Urodynamic and electrophysiologic studies showed abnormalities in 17 (81%) of 21 patients, of whom 13 (62%) had upper motor neuron dysfunction. Seventeen patients underwent corrective spinal surgery and none of the patients deteriorated on a follow-up urodynamic

Neurophysiological investigations in patients with head tremor.

We studied 30 patients whose primary complaint was head tremor in an attempt to characterize neurophysiological aspects of their abnormal movement. Based on family medical history and physical examination, 23 patients had definite or probable essential tremor (essential head tremor, EHT). The remaining seven had mild dystonic signs accompanying their head tremor (head tremor plus dystonic signs, HT + DS). We recorded head movement and the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the sternomastoid and splenius capitis muscles, determined the spontaneous blinking rate, and measured the excitability r

[A case of Aicardi syndrome: neurophysiological investigation].

A Japanese girl developed tonic spasms in series at two months after birth. When she was admitted at 4 months, she had generalized muscle hypotonia and could not control her head. She had atotal agenesis of the corpus callosum on MRI, reticulo-lacunitis revealed by ophthalmologic examination, and hypsarrhythmia in EEG. Brain stem auditory evoked potentials and flash-visual evoked potentials exhibited abnormally asymmetrical findings. The cortical components of somatosensory evoked potentials were not elicited on admission, but some components became to be recognized on median nerve stimulation

Neurophysiologic assessment in the management of spinal dysraphism.

Neurophysiologic techniques provide a valuable addition to the armamentarium of tools for the evaluation of sensory and motor function in the pediatric spinal cord. These techniques include median, radial, and ulnar nerve evoked potentials from the upper extremity; common peroneal and tibial nerve evoked potentials from the lower extremity; dermatomal potentials; and compound muscle action potentials and compound nerve action potentials. The techniques that evaluate the sensory system have been used extensively and effectively as research tools, as adjuncts to diagnostic evaluation, and for in

Radiological and neurophysiological changes in Japanese encephalitis.

Six patients with Japanese encephalitis, four males and two females whose age ranged between 2 and 47 years, were subjected to neurophysiological and radiological studies. An EEG in five of the patients showed diffuse delta wave activity and one had an alpha coma. Delta activity seems to be due to thalamic involvement, which was seen on CT of two and MRI of all the patients. The thalamic lesions were characteristically bilateral and were haemorragic in five. Changes on MRI included abnormalities of the brainstem in three and the basal ganglia and spinal cord in one patient each. Lower motor ne

[The clinical and neurophysiological aspects of Rett's syndrome].

36 children with Rett's syndrome were examined in respect to the illness stage and psychopathologic trends. It is supposed that relationship of EEG abnormalities to clinical stages reflects gradual involvement of different brain structures in the pathological process. Possibility of temporary interruptions in the disease progression is demonstrated.

[Neurophysiologic analysis of visceral afferent systems].

Interaction of visceral and somatic afferents and changes of neuronal discharges in focus of maximal activity of cerebral cortex on repetitive stimulation of visceral afferents were studied in anesthetized immobilized cats. Habituation was shown to develop in the cortex. Visceral and somatic impulses appeared to converge on cortical neurons in the S1. Simultaneous stimulation of the visceral and somatic afferents revealed domination of visceral influences. The elements of cortex seem to have unequal plasticity which can provide premises for learning process.

Neurophysiologic Mechanisms of Cerebral Ischemia and the EEG.

Cerebral ischemia rapidly disturbs neuronal function through failure of synaptic transmission and, with ongoing energy deprivation, loss of ion gradients. Adenosine-mediated inhibition of presynaptic release leads to an early and reversible loss of synaptic transmission, reflected in the EEG by slowing and eventual suppression of rhythmic activity. With more severe or prolonged energy failure, Na + /K + -ATPase failure results in membrane depolarization, cytotoxic swelling, and irreversible injury. Secondary injury mechanisms include spreading depolarizations, inflammation, and oxidative stres

Rethinking the neurophysiological concept of cortical myoclonus.

Cortical myoclonus is thought to result from abnormal electrical discharges arising in the sensorimotor cortex. Given the ease of recording of cortical discharges, electrophysiological features of cortical myoclonus have been better characterized than those of subcortical forms, and electrophysiological criteria for cortical myoclonus have been proposed. These include the presence of giant somatosensory evoked potentials, enhanced long-latency reflexes, electroencephalographic discharges time-locked to individual myoclonic jerks and significant cortico-muscular connectivity. Other features tha

Anatomical and neurophysiological basis of face recognition.

Face recognition is a highly developed and efficient human function that involves multiple neural networks. A main pathway links the occipital cortex, where an occipital face area (OFA) has been identified, to a fusiform face area (FFA) in the fusiform gyrus, which plays a critical role in face recognition. This core pathway deals with invariant aspects of the face. Another pathway, including the superior temporal sulcus, is involved in the perception of more changeable aspects of the face such as gaze orientation, face expression and lip movements. It has been defined by some authors as a "th

Neurophysiological correlates of sexually evocative speech.

Speakers modulate their voice (prosody) to communicate non-literal meanings, such as sexual innuendo (She inspected his package this morning, where "package" could refer to a man's penis). Here, we analyzed event-related potentials to illuminate how listeners use prosody to interpret sexual innuendo and what neurocognitive processes are involved. Participants listened to third-party statements with literal or 'sexual' interpretations, uttered in an unmarked or sexually evocative tone. Analyses revealed: 1) rapid neural differentiation of neutral vs. sexual prosody from utterance onset; (2) N40

Cannabinoids in multiple sclerosis: A neurophysiological analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the action of cannabinoids on spasticity and pain in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, by means of neurophysiological indexes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We assessed 15 patients with progressive MS (11 females) using clinical scales for spasticity and pain, as well as neurophysiological variables (H/M ratio, cutaneous silent period or CSP). Testing occurred before (T0) and during (T1) a standard treatment with an oral spray containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Neurophysiological measures at T0 were compared with those of 14 healthy
