Oxygenation problems are common in very sick infants, and involve a high risk of mortality or residual morbidity. We describe two infants with severe oxygenation difficulties. In one baby these were caused by meconium aspiration, while in the second, premature (1,500 g birth weight) infant Escherichia coli septicemia had precipitated persistent pulmonary hypertension. Inhaled nitric oxide led to immediate improvement in oxygenation, and the one infant was weaned off mechanical ventilatory support after four days, the other after ten days. There were no discernible side effects in either baby.

Rats with right hemicolectomy were divided into two groups. One group was free-fed (RHFF), the other group pair-fed (RHPF) and both were compared with a group of control animals. The quantitative capillary tube technique was used to measure chemotactic responses of bacteria to spatial gradients of amino acids and other attractants. A mehtod of measuring body nitrogen by neutron capture gamma analysis is described. The neutron flux is provided by four collimated 5 Ci Pu-Be sources, placed to give a bilateral irradiation of the subject. The 10-83 MeV thermal neutron capture gamma rays from 14N are detected by two heavily shielded 5 in X 4 in NaI(Tl) detectors. Results indicate a reproducibility +/-3% (1 SD) for a 10 min irradiation of the chest area, while giving a radiation dose equivalent of 50 mREM.

A stable, non-nitrogen-fixing mutant of Clostridium pasteurianum W5 was isolated. The mutant has the same growth rate as the wild type on ammonia nitrogen, but is not able to grow on N(2). Cell-free extracts of the derepressed mutant are unable to fix nitrogen, or reduce the alternate substrates of nitrogenase such as cyanide, azide, or acetylene. Recombination with wild-type components from a diethylaminoethyl cellulose column indicates that the mutant contains component II, but is lacking component I activity.
