Characterisation of SalRAB a salicylic acid inducible positively regulated efflux system of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae 3841.

Salicylic acid is an important signalling molecule in plant-microbe defence and symbiosis. We analysed the transcriptional responses of the … the salA mutant. Pea plants nodulated by salA or rmrA strains did not have altered nodule number or nitrogen fixation rates, consistent with weak expression of salA in the rhizosphere and in nodule bacteria. However, BLAST analysis revealed seventeen putative efflux systems in Rlv3841 and several of these were highly differentially expressed during rhizosphere colo …

Genome sequence of Rhizobium etli CNPAF512, a nitrogen-fixing symbiont isolated from bean root nodules in Brazil.

Rhizobium etli is a Gram-negative soil-dwelling alphaproteobacterium that carries out symbiotic biological nitrogen fixation in close association with legume hosts. R. etli strains exhibit high sequence divergence and are geographically structured, with a potentially dramatic influence on the outcome of symbiosis. Here, we present the genome sequence of R. etli CNPAF512, a Brazilian isolate from bean nodules. We anticipate that the availability of genome sequences of R. etli strains from distinctly different areas will provide valuable new insights into the geographic mosaic of the R. etli pan…

Cyanobacteria as Nanogold Factories II: Chemical Reactivity and anti-Myocardial Infraction Properties of Customized Gold Nanoparticles Biosynthesized by Cyanothece sp.

Cyanothece sp., a coccoid, unicellular, nitrogen-fixing and hydrogen-producing cyanobacterium, has been used in this study to biosynthesize customized gold nanoparticles under certain chemical conditions. The produced gold nanoparticles had a characteristic absorption band at 525-535 nm. Two types of gold nanoparticle, the purple and blue, were formed according to the chemical environment in which the cyanobacterium was grown. Dynamic light scattering was implemented to estimate the size of the purple and blue nanoparticles, which ranged from 80 ± 30 nm and 129 ± 40 nm in diameter, respectivel

Timing matters: Rhizobia strain rankings based on host biomass shift between early and late harvests.

In the legume-rhizobia mutualism, symbiotic success changes with time, complicating early strain quality evaluations. We measured host biomass at three and six months after inoculation of bearded clover ( Trifolium barbigerum ) with 77 strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum . Across timepoints, strain performance rankings based on host biomass varied: some top strains at three months later declined, whereas initially low-ranking strains ultimately surpassed them. This suggests biological tradeoffs in the timing of nitrogen fixation and the allocation of the host resources. Our results highlight th…

Remodeling of the 3D chromatin architecture in the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica during lipid accumulation.

BACKGROUND: Genomic three-dimensional (3D) spatial organization plays a key role in shaping gene expression and associated chromatin modification, and it is highly sensitive to environmental stress conditions. In microalgae, exposure to nitrogen stress can drive lipid accumulation, yet the associated functional alterations in the spatial organization of the microalgal genome have yet to be effectively characterized. RESULTS: Accordingly, the present study employed RNA-seq, Hi-C, and ChIP-seq approaches to explore the relationship between 3D chromosomal architecture and gene expression during

Removal of nutrients in various types of constructed wetlands.

The processes that affect removal and retention of nitrogen during wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs) are manifold and include NH(3) volatilization, nitrification, denitrification, nitrogen fixation, plant and microbial uptake, mineralization (ammonification), nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate-ammonification), anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX), fragmentation, sorption, desorption, burial, and leaching. However, only few processes ultimately remove total nitrogen from the wastewater while most processes just convert nitrogen to its various forms. Removal of total nitrog…

Freezing nitrogen ethanol composite as an alternative to liquid nitrogen in giant cell tumor cryotherapy: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign but locally aggressive tumor, commonly found around the knee in young adults. Despite surgical excision, GCTs are known for their high recurrence rates, prompting the use of adjuvant therapies such as cryotherapy. Liquid nitrogen is a widely used cryoablation agent but carries the risk of complications including skin necrosis, nerve injury, and pathological fractures. A newer agent, freezing nitrogen ethanol composite (FNEC), has emerged as a potentially safer alternative with similar tumoricidal effects and fewer side effects. CASE PRE

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Heterosigma akashiwo to nitrogen deficiency and urea utilization.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for phytoplankton growth. The availability of ambient N and its chemical forms are critically important for the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Although previous studies have explored the transcriptomic responses of Heterosigma akashiwo to N conditions, these analyses were largely descriptive and lacked in-depth characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying urea utilization and N deficiency responses. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive physiological and transcriptomic investigation of this globally distributed HAB species

Plant-derived root exudates enhance extracellular and intracellular metabolism of rhizosphere anammox bacteria: Implication for intensified contributions in constructed wetlands.

In constructed wetlands (CWs), plant-derived root exudates (REs) profoundly influence anammox community and its contribution; however, the effect of dynamic changes in REs driven by plant growth on the extracellular and intracellular properties of anammox bacteria remain unclear. Herein, we constructed CWs microcosms incubated with typical rhizosphere REs levels across distinct plant growth stages to investigate the regulation of REs on anammox metabolism. The results showed that REs stimulated the anammox capacity, with activity (0.2 ± 0.1 g NH4+-N/gVSS/d, p < 0.001) and abundance (1.9 × 1011

Is salt stress tolerance in Casuarina glauca Sieb. ex Spreng. associated with its nitrogen-fixing root-nodule symbiosis? An analysis at the photosynthetic level.

Casuarina glauca is an actinorhizal tree which establishes root-nodule symbiosis with N2-fixing Frankia bacteria. This plant is commonly found in saline zones and is widely used to remediate marginal soils and prevent desertification. The nature of its ability to survive in extreme environments and the extent of Frankia contribution to stress tolerance remain unknown. Thus, we evaluated the ability of C. glauca to cope with salt stress and the influence of the symbiosis on this trait. To this end, we analysed the impact of salt on plant growth, mineral contents, water relations, photosynthetic

The effects of pesticides on bacterial nitrogen fixers in peanut-growing area.

In the peanut production, the applications of herbicides and fungicides are a common practice. In this work, studies done under field conditions demonstrated that pesticides affected negatively the number and nitrogenase activity of diazotrophic populations of soil. Agrochemical effects were not transient, since these parameters were not recovered to pre-treatment levels even 1 year after pesticides application. Results obtained from greenhouse experiments revealed that the addition of herbicide or fungicides diminished the free-living diazotrophs number reaching levels found in soil amended w
