Mercury is a relatively well-studied pollutant because of its global distribution, toxicity, and ability to bioaccumulate and biomagnify in food webs: however, little is known about bioaccumulation and toxicity of Hg in turtles. We report a new combinatorial approach of stable isotopic labeling (SIL)-solid phase extraction (SPE)-liquid chromatography-tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) for identification of amino-containing contaminants at trace levels in source water. Methylmercury is a toxin of local, regional, and global concern, with estuarine habitats possessing ecological characteristics that support conversion of inorganic mercury into this methylated form. We monitored Hg concentrations in species within the food web of the lower Cape Fear River (CFR) estuary in 2018-2020.
