Rapid Training and Implementation of the Pollock Technique, a Safe, Effective Newborn Circumcision Procedure, in a Low-Resource Setting.

Male circumcision is highly protective against urinary tract infections, inflammatory conditions of the penis, sexually transmitted infections, and urogenital cancers. We aimed to reintroduce newborn male circumcision through the creation of a training program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti-an area with a considerable burden of preventable urogenital infections, sexually transmitted infections, and low circumcision rate-after an earlier study reported that a majority of Haitian medical providers were in need of and wanted newborn circumcision training. The program was conducted at the GHESKIO Health

Barriers to male-partner participation in programs to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission in South Africa.

Efforts to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) in sub-Saharan Africa have focused overwhelmingly on women, to the unintended exclusion of their male partners. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tshwane, South Africa, to determine barriers to male-partner participation during PMTCT. In-depth interviews were conducted with 124 men whose partners had recently been pregnant, and five focus group discussions were held with physicians, nurses, HIV counselors, and community representatives. Qualitative analysis revealed that while most fathers believed that HIV testing is an import

Academic success or failure in nursing students: results of a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing student academic failure is a phenomenon of growing international interest, not only because of its economic impact but also because it negatively affects the availability of future nurses in different healthcare systems. To recruit the students with the highest probability of academic success, an open challenge for universities is to recruit students who have previously demonstrated superior scholastic aptitudes that appear to be associated with a greater likelihood of academic success. Documenting the relationship between the selection methods used when selecting nursing

Understanding the challenges faced by men learning to live with clean intermittent self-catheterisation.

Clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC) is considered the preferred option to an indwelling catheter for emptying the bladder in people with a range of voiding dysfunctions. CISC has a lower risk of complications and urinary tract infections. This narrative review of previous qualitative research explores the quality-of-life impacts and highlights the challenges that men face. It will provide nurses who teach CISC with some useful insights into the male experience and the issues of concordance and adherence. This will help to better inform and guide clinical practice in this specialist

A nurse-run clinic for patients with incidentally discovered small abdominal aortic aneurysms is feasible and cost-effective.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with incidentally discovered small abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) require assessment by a vascular surgery department for possible enrollment in a surveillance programme. Our unit implemented a vascular nurse-run AAA clinic in October 2010. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a specialist nurse-run small AAA clinic. METHODS: Demographic and clinical data were collected prospectively for all patients seen in the new vascular nurse clinic between October 2010 and November 2012. A validated AAA operative mortality score was used to aid decision making

In Plain Sight: Open Doors, Mixed-sex Wards and Sexual Abuse in English Psychiatric Hospitals, 1950s-Early 1990s.

This article investigates the consequences of unlocking psychiatric wards and allowing male and female patients and staff to mix freely in the post-war period. I argue that the sexes were allowed to socialise with each other primarily for the benefit of male patients, and that some superintendents were 'blind' to the dangers of sexual abuse to which female patients were exposed, especially given the growing number of male 'sexual psychopaths' who were being admitted to open wards. While male nurses did complain about mixed wards in the mid 1960s, it was not until the rise of feminism and patie

A rare case of fatal rectal perforation and sepsis following traumatic urinary catheterization.

This case report details a fatal rectal perforation and sepsis in a comorbid 96-year-old male after traumatic urinary catheterization, highlighting the risks of IDC management in elderly patients with complex health backgrounds. Despite maximal medical therapy, including escalated antibiotics and ICU care, the patient died from septic shock linked to improper catheter insertion by a non-specialist nurse in the community. This case emphasizes the urgent need for better catheterization practices, specialized nursing education, and clear guidelines to prevent such outcomes.

Back pain: a case study.

Musculoskeletal complaints, especially back pain without trauma, are frequent health problems seen by nurse practitioners in community emergency centers and office settings. Back pain can be a symptom of serious health problems. This article presents the case of a Caucasian male in his early sixties who reported sudden onset of back pain after pushing a heavy object. Careful clinical assessment led the nurse practitioner with the collaborating physician to pursue diagnostic tests, which revealed thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Do Not Play: Recognizing Spiritual Distress in Serious Illness.

Spiritual distress is a significant yet frequently underrecognized component of serious illness and palliative care. Although spirituality is recognized as a core domain of quality palliative care, patients often express spiritual suffering through grief, mistrust, anger, identity, trauma, or existential concerns rather than explicitly religious language. This article explores the role of spiritual assessment and open-ended inquiry in recognizing spiritual distress through the case of an 86-year-old Black male with metastatic prostate cancer who repeatedly refused to answer standardized questi

Sex, gender and the carceral: Female staff experiences of working in forensic care with sexual offenders.

English high-secure hospitals have contained individuals deemed mentally disordered, and dangerous, since the mid-nineteenth century. With the development of gender sensitive services female patients have been moved out of these institutions into smaller secure settings. Female staff continue to work in high secure hospitals, but are often in a minority in these services. Little is known about how female staff experience the everyday world of work. This paper is based on in-depth interviews with female nurses employed in a unit caring for detained male sexual offenders with a diagnosis of pers

Transgender identity development as represented by a group of female-to-male transgendered adults.

This article represents work done in the discipline of nursing to raise awareness about the lives and experiences of transgendered persons, who receive little coverage in our nursing textbooks, professional journals, or student clinical experiences. The findings presented here are from a larger qualitative examination of the lives and experiences of a group of 11 transgendered adults that examined four broad areas: transgender identity recognition, acknowledgement, and development; bodily experiences; relationships with others; and health care experiences. The focus of this article is the rele
