Breast cancer knowledge, attitudes and practice among nurses in Lagos, Nigeria.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted among nurses working in a general hospital in Lagos to determine their knowledge, attitude and practice regarding breast cancer. A self-administered questionnaire was used to investigate knowledge of symptoms, methods of diagnosis and use of cancer screening methods. Two hundred and four nurses out of 280 participated in the study (73% response rate). Knowledge about symptoms, methods of diagnosis and self-breast examination was generally very good. However, only 30% had had a clinical breast examination and 8% a mammogram within the past three years. Use

New developments in genetics-knowledge, attitudes and information needs of practice nurses.

BACKGROUND: In response to increased referrals to geneticists and the predicted patient demand for genetic counselling, it has been proposed that some genetics services should be provided in primary care. Practice nurses are ideally placed to collect family history information and advise patients accordingly in new patient, family planning, well women/men and chronic disease clinics, but little is known about their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards providing genetic advice. OBJECTIVES: The survey aimed to measure the current situation with regard to: the prevalence of family history rec

Prevention of occupational transmission of bloodborne diseases in clinical nurse anesthesia practice.

This article discusses the most commonly recognized bloodborne infectious diseases with which the nurse anesthetist comes into contact during the provision of clinical care: hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and the human immunodeficiency virus, along with the potential percutaneous and mucocutaneous routes of exposure. The prevention of occupational exposure to these pathogens is discussed by applying standard or universal precaution measures to anesthesia clinical practice. Treatment measures for accidental exposure to bloodborne pathogens is also discussed.

[Training teams in suicide risk assessment: the role of advanced practice nurses].

Suicide risk encompasses a variety of complex clinical situations that require specific skills on the part of nurses. A process of reflecting on past experiences provides a better understanding of the role of advanced practice nurses in their interdisciplinary collaboration and clinical leadership responsibilities. The implementation of a training program on suicide risk prevention at a medical-psychological center concretely illustrates their contribution to enhancing team competencies.

When Complexity Becomes Ordinary: Expertise and the Recognition Paradox in Nursing Practice.

This paper develops the recognition paradox in nursing practice: expertise can increase the capacity to manage clinically complex situations while rendering the relational work through which they are managed less available for reflective recognition. Nursing complexity is commonly identified through visible proxies-workload, acuity, care intensity, number or difficulty of interventions. Clancy (2024) has shown how attempts to represent complex practice frequently reduce it to discrete components. Building on that critique, the paper identifies a distinct site of selectivity: complexity may bec

The importance of recognising and addressing post-intensive care syndrome in nursing practice.

Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) refers to physical, cognitive and psychological problems that can develop after treatment in an intensive care unit. As survival after critical illness increases, more patients and families experience longer term impairments that affect recovery, quality of life and return to usual functioning. Nurses have a key role in recognising risk factors and early features of PICS, reducing avoidable harms during admission, and supporting recovery after discharge. Evidence-informed approaches include early mobilisation, minimising deep sedation where clinically approp

Exploration of Extended-Release Lorazepam: Implications for Safe Nurse Practitioner Practice.

In 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Loreev XR®, a long-acting formulation of lorazepam, raising important clinical considerations for nurse practitioners (NPs) who routinely manage anxiety, insomnia, and stress-related conditions. Despite well-established risks, including dependence, withdrawal, cognitive impairment, and heightened danger when combined with central nervous system depressants, benzodiazepines (BZDs) remain widely prescribed in the United States. The current article examines the rationale for introducing a new extended-release BZD, the pharmacokinetic and pha
