AIM: Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare genomic syndrome resulting in severe disability. Chronic childhood disorders can profoundly influence growth and development. Nutrition-related issues in A-T are not well described, and there are no nutritional guidelines. This study investigated the nutrition-related characteristics and behaviours of Australian A-T patients attending a national clinic.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 13 A-T patients (nine females; aged: 4-23 years): nutritional status was assessed by anthropometric and body cell mass (BCM) calculations. Parents reported their

BACKGROUND: Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) has been used successfully in preventing intrauterine growth retardation, premature labor, and perinatal morbidity and mortality associated with poor maternal nutrition. Parenteral nutrition support is provided in most instances for short intervals during pregnancy when oral intake is compromised, eg, hyperemesis gravidarum or during complications from comorbid conditions that develop or are exacerbated during pregnancy. Few reports describe continuous parenteral nutrition support from conception through labor and delivery.
OBJECTIVE: To support su

The Metabolic and Infusion Support Service (MISS) at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was established in 1988 to improve the quality of nutritional support given to children undergoing therapy for cancer. This multidisciplinary group, representing each of the clinical services within the hospital, provides a range of services to all patients requiring full enteral or parenteral nutritional support. In 1991, the MISS developed an algorithm for nutritional support which emphasized a demand for a compelling rationale for choosing parenteral over enteral support in patients with functional ga…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Many older adults and patients do not achieve sufficient nutritional intake to support their minimal needs and are at risk of, or are suffering from, (protein-energy) malnutrition. Better understanding of current treatment options and factors determining nutritional intake, may help design new strategies to solve this multifactorial problem.
METHODS: Medline, Science Citation Index, ScienceDirect and Google databases (until December 2008) were searched with the keywords malnutrition, elderly, older adults, food intake, energy density, variety, taste, satiety, and appetite.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The multimodal approach to patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma often includes polychemotherapy combined with radiation therapy. Cancer dysphagia and drug-related anorexia, mucositis and vomiting can all lead to malnutrition. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of the administration of enteral nutrition (EN) on the patient's nutritional status, tolerance of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and final oncological outcome.
METHODS: Fifty esophageal cancer patients who were to be submitted to chemotherapy (days 1-4 5-fluorouracil (FU) 1 g/m2/day and cisp

PURPOSE: Patients with cancer experience nutrition challenges, but access to registered dietitians (RDs) is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a specialized Artificial Intelligence (AI) Nutrition Platform trained on curated high-quality evidence is equivalent in providing nutrition information to patients with cancer compared with oncology-credentialed RDs.
METHODS: Twenty nutrition queries were developed by an expert panel, encompassing common cancer types, symptoms, and food allergies/preferences. These queries were administered to the AI Platform and to four nation

OBJECTIVES: Critically ill children are often malnourished and require nutrition support (NS). Early enteral nutrition (EEN) seems to be safe in critically ill patients. However, there is a scarcity of data about the management of EEN in sick pediatric patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the nutritional status, NS characteristics, macronutrient supply, and associations between NS and outcomes in critically ill children in Spain.
METHODS: This was a multicentric, prospective, cross-sectional study involving critically ill children who received NS and with an expected length of stay

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Parenteral nutrition (PN) should be provided to the malnourished patient if enteral feeding is insufficient or unsafe. A nutrition support team (NST) may improve PN services. We compared the use and complications of hospital PN before and after the implementation of an NST.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: All inpatients referred for PN outside of the intensive care unit and the intestinal failure unit were prospectively included from 2009 to 2012. The NST was introduced in 2010. Quality improvement methodology was applied.
RESULTS: In 2009, a mean of 16 (limits of normal variation 4

INTRODUCTION: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is an essential component in the treatment of many hospitalized patients; however its use is associated to severe complications. The monitoring of these patients has been demonstrated as an effective method for the success of nutrition therapy; therefore, nutritional support teams play an important role to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the PN. In Spain, there is no data available about the situation of nutritional support teams in hospitals.
OBJECTIVE: Develop a nutritional support team in our hospital and analyze the interventions and ou…

Nutrition support therapy (NST) requires continuous monitoring and interdisciplinary collaboration to optimize nutrition status and prevent complications. Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) are pivotal in managing NST, using their expertise to assess malnutrition risk, evaluate suitable nutrition routes, and lead teams in evidence-based nutrition care. However, not all RDNs operate at an expert level owing to varying education, training, and clinical experiences. A survey to determine expert-level RDN NST practices was created and distributed through the Dietitians in Nutrition Support

BACKGROUND: Severely malnourished patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery are at high risk of postoperative complications, increasing costs and length of hospital stay.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of perioperative nutritional support on nutritional and surgical outcomes in these patients.
METHODS: This was a prospective before-after study. Perioperative nutritional support in severely malnourished patients based on at least one of the following criteria: SGA.C, weight loss > 10% within 6 months, BMI < 18 kg/m2, serum albumin < 30 g/l. Once the patients were …

Cancer cachexia (CC) is characterized by significant skeletal muscle wasting, and contributes to diminished quality of life, while being associated with poorer response to treatment and with reduced survival. Chronic inflammation plays a central role in driving CC progression, within a complex interplay favoring catabolism. Although cachexia cannot be fully reversed by conventional nutritional support, nutritional intervention shows promise for the prevention and treatment of the syndrome. Of special interest are nutrients with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and those that activat…

BACKGROUND: Bowel necrosis is a commonly observed condition in elderly patients with longstanding diabetes. In such condition, intestinal resection is usually performed for the removal of the gangrenous part. Post-surgical dietary management after bowel resection poses several challenges for the health care team.
CASE PRESENTATION: The case presented in this study is that of an elderly diabetic male who developed acute renal failure as a result of neglect in post-surgical feeding after intestinal resection. After the intervention by a trained dietitian, a transitional diet was planned and suc

Neuromuscular impairments occurring in the critically ill patient have been attributed to factors such as sepsis, release of inflammatory mediators, or the use of drugs unfavorably affecting neuromuscular function. The role of metabolic and nutritional factors in the development of this condition has received little attention. Currently, the use of protocols of intensive glycemia monitoring might be of great interest in preventing neuromuscular impairments in critically ill patients. The precise mechanisms of hyperglycemia involvement in this condition are still unknown, although evidence from

The review summarizes clinically established treatment forms of alcoholic liver disease in four main chapters: abstinence, nutritional supportation, drug therapy and liver transplantation are discussed. Drug therapy is described according to the three types of alcoholic hepatopathies (fatty liver, hepatitis and cirrhosis). Early diagnosis and treatment depending on the severity and stage of alcoholic liver disease are of importance for the attempts to retard progression and improve prognosis.
