Occupational heat strain among home health care workers: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat events affect workers' health. Home health care workers face physically strenuous tasks, mobility demands, and increased workloads during heat events. Yet little is known about the extent of heat strain and the specific symptoms they experience. This study aims to examine how home health care workers in Switzerland perceive heat exposure at work and what heat-related symptoms they experience. We examine which factors are associated with perceived heat strain. METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online cross‑sectional survey of home health care workers (N = 359) in nort

Seroprevalence of Influenza D Virus in Cattle Workers: An Occupational Health Perspective.

Influenza D virus (IDV) was first isolated in 2011 from a swine with respiratory disease symptoms in the United States. Epidemiological and serological evidence suggests that cattle are the natural reservoir of IDV, with periodic spillover events to other animal hosts. This study investigated the seroprevalence of two IDV lineages, D/660 and D/OK, among cattle workers in Southern Italy between 2023 and 2024 to better characterize the zoonotic exposure risk in this occupational setting. A control group from the same geographical area was also included. Serum samples were tested by hemagglutinat

Advancements in Cardiac Catheterization Safety: Novel Radiation Protection Approaches Redefining Occupational Health.

Radiation exposure poses a substantial occupational risk for healthcare professionals in the catheterization laboratory (cath lab). The escalating complexity and frequency of interventional procedures, such as cardiac catheterizations and percutaneous coronary interventions, underscore the need for innovative strategies to mitigate radiation exposure. While traditional measures like lead aprons, thyroid collars, and goggles have been pivotal in reducing radiation exposure, they have limitations, especially during prolonged and intricate procedures. Consequently, there is a growing demand for a

Leisure-time and occupational physical activity and health outcomes in cardiovascular disease.

OBJECTIVE: In healthy populations, leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) improves health outcomes, while, paradoxically, occupational physical activity (OPA) is associated with detrimental health effects. This study aimed to investigate the associations of LTPA and OPA with mortality, cardiovascular events and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS: In 7058 outpatients with CVD (age 61±10 years, 75% male) from the prospective Utrecht Cardiovascular Cohort-Second Manifestations of ARTerial disease cohort, Cox models were used to quantify the associations b

Post-COVID Symptoms in Occupational Cohorts: Effects on Health and Work Ability.

Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome is frequently observed in workers and has a substantial impact on work ability. We conducted a health promotion program to identify cases of post-COVID syndrome, analyze the distribution of symptoms and their association with work ability. Of the 1422 workers who underwent routine medical examination in 2021, 1378 agreed to participate. Among the latter, 164 had contracted SARS-CoV-2 and 115 (70% of those who were infected) had persistent symptoms. A cluster analysis showed that most of the post-COVID syndrome cases were characterized by sensory disturbances (anosm

Firefighters' occupational exposure: Contribution from biomarkers of effect to assess health risks.

Firefighting is physically and physiologically exhausting besides encompassing exposure to toxic fire emissions. Biomonitoring studies from the past five years have been significantly contributing to characterize the occupational-related health effects in this group of professionals and to improve risk assessment. Therefore, this study gathers and critically discusses the most characterized biomarkers of effect (oxidative stress, DNA and protein damage, stress hormones, inflammation, and vascular, lung, and liver injury), including those potentially more promising to be explored in future stud

Occupational therapy driver assessments with mental health consumers: A mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Driving is an important occupation, which enables other recovery goals for adult mental health consumers. Multidisciplinary clinicians can support consumers to engage in safe driving practices, which may include referral to a specialist occupational therapy driver assessor. There is presently limited evidence to inform us about the role of occupational therapy driver assessors in mental health and the impact of such services for consumers. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the reasons for referral and the recommendations resulting from driver assessments with adult consumer
