Population size, parity structure, and wing length of Coquillettidia perturbans in an Ohio focus of eastern equine encephalitis.

Adult female density, parity status, and wing length were determined weekly for a population of Coquillettidia perturbans in an area enzootic for eastern equine encephalitis virus in central Ohio. Samples were collected in CO2-baited CDC miniature light traps from the first week in June through the 2nd week of September 1992. Population density indicated a single emergence peak during the 2nd week in July. However, parity rates showed 2 peaks, occurring in the first week of August (70.9% parous) and the 2nd week of September (55.3% parous), which suggested that there was a relatively small 2nd…

Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica Bacteremia Associated With Maggot-Infested Ulcers and Tumor Lysis Syndrome in Ohio, USA: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Wohlfahrtiimonas chitiniclastica is an emerging Gram-negative bacillus historically linked to larvae of the parasitic fly Wohlfahrtia magnifica. Although most human infections have been reported in Europe and Asia, cases are increasingly recognized in North America. CASE SUMMARY: A 74-year-old man from Ohio presented with sepsis and maggot-infested decubitus ulcers. Blood cultures grew Gram-negative, oxidase-positive rods that could not be identified at the home institution. The isolate was referred to an outside hospital, where it was initially misidentified as Edwardsiella speci…

Using participatory epidemiology to understand differences in tick-borne disease perceptions from homeowners in the Ohio River valley.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are the most common vector-borne diseases reported annually in the United States. Lyme disease, caused primarily … meowners from a Lyme disease endemic area (southwestern Pennsylvania) and an emerging area (eastern Ohio). The survey covered three main areas of interest: perceived risk of tick exposure and TBD health risks, personal protection methods used to prevent or reduce exposure to tick bites, and protection methods to reduce tick presence on residential prop …

Understanding abortion legality and trimester of abortion care in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, three abortion-restrictive states.

INTRODUCTION: In the era of Dobbs, legality of abortion care in the United States depends upon state law. Even before Dobbs, while abortion remained legal mounting restrictions and debate surrounding legal abortion could have led to confusion about abortion legality and discouraged patients from accessing legal abortion. We hypothesized an association between believing abortion is illegal or uncertainty about legality with later timing of abortion care. METHODS: We surveyed patients seeking abortion care in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky from April 2020 to April 2021. We asked about their …

Cluster of human Salmonella Guinea infections: Reported reptile exposures and associated opportunities for infection prevention - Ohio, 2019-2020.

A cluster of five human Salmonella Guinea cases was identified among Ohio residents through core genome multilocus sequence typing of clinical isolates. An investigation was conducted to characterize illnesses and identify common exposures. Four patients were aged ≤5 years and three of four patients with information available regarding exposure to animals reported prior exposure to bearded dragons. Practices that potentially increased the risk for Salmonella transmission from reptiles to humans included allowing pet reptiles to roam freely in the home, cleaning reptile habitats indoors, and ki…

Trends in and Predictors of Long-Term Antipsychotic Polypharmacy Use Among Ohio Medicaid Patients with Schizophrenia, 2008-2014.

OBJECTIVE: The study examined trends and patterns in long-term antipsychotic polypharmacy among Ohio Medicaid patients with schizophrenia and predictors of use. METHODS: A study using a retrospective cohort design and Medicaid claims data was conducted for a cohort of 25,062 adults with a schizophrenic disorder receiving antipsychotic medication between 2008 and 2014. Long-term antipsychotic polypharmacy was defined as simultaneous treatment with two or more antipsychotic medications for ≥90 days. Annual trends in antipsychotic polypharmacy were estimated. Multivariate logistic regression was…

Transitioning illicit drug preferences and emerging user identities in Ohio: The proliferation of methamphetamine use among African Americans.

Understanding the social dynamics of local methamphetamine markets is critical to improving community health and reducing social costs associated with illicit drug use. We examine a local drug market in Summit County, Ohio, wherein methamphetamine users ascribe themselves different ethnic identities from those long associated with the drug elsewhere in the United States. Qualitative interviews with 52 study participants demonstrate that very poor and homeless White males and females are now using methamphetamine; however, even more surprising is that 31 of the participants identified themselve…

Enterobacteriaceae Harboring AmpC (blaCMY) and ESBL (blaCTX-M) in Migratory and Nonmigratory Wild Songbird Populations on Ohio Dairies.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) confer bacterial resistance to critically important antimicrobials, including extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). Livestock are important reservoirs for the zoonotic food-borne transmission of ESC-resistant enteric bacteria. Our aim is to describe the potential role of migratory and resident wild birds in the epidemiology of ESBL-mediated bacterial resistance on dairy farms. Using mist nets, we sampled wild migratory and resident birds either immediately adjacent to or 600 ft away from free-stall barns on three Ohio dairy farms during the 2014 and 20…

Comparison of abortion incidence estimates derived from direct survey questions versus the list experiment among women in Ohio.

Abortion is highly stigmatized in the United States which prevents its accurate measurement in surveys. The list experiment aims to improve the reporting of abortion history. We evaluated whether a list experiment resulted in higher reporting of abortion experiences than did two direct questions. Utilizing data from a representative survey of adult women of reproductive age in Ohio, we examined abortion history using two direct questions and a double list experiment. Through the double list experiment, we asked respondents to report how many of two lists of health items they had experienced; o…

Trends in opioid overdose fatalities in Cuyahoga County, Ohio: Multi-drug mixtures, the African-American community and carfentanil.

BACKGROUND: Ohio's age-adjusted opioid overdose fatality rate is double the national average. In an ever-evolving epidemic, it is crucial to monitor trends to inform public health interventions. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted using the Medical Examiner's decedent case files for all accidental opioid-related adult overdose deaths in Cuyahoga County (Cleveland), Ohio in 2017. Characterization of trends was based on autopsy/toxicology and first responder reports, medical records and death scene investigations. RESULTS: Of 543 accidental opioid-related adult overdose fatalities, 64…

Workers' Compensation Claim Rates and Costs for Musculoskeletal Disorders Related to Overexertion Among Construction Workers - Ohio, 2007-2017.

Overexertion is a leading cause of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among construction workers. Nearly 90% of construction jobs require manual handling of materials for approximately one half of the worker's time (1). In 2015, overexertion from lifting and lowering materials caused 30% of WMSDs among construction workers; overexertion involving pushing, pulling, holding, carrying, and catching materials caused an additional 37% of WMSDs (1). This study examined the rate and cost of WMSD claims from overexertion among Ohio construction workers during 2007-2017. Workers' compensati…

Similarities and Differences in Diabetes Diagnosis Stories Among Adults With Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes in Appalachian Ohio.

This qualitative study examined adults' recollections of their reactions to their diabetes diagnosis and explored the similarities and differences among those diagnosed with type 1 versus type 2 diabetes. Based on semistructured interviews, the authors identified three themes: 1) shared emotional reactions of fear, sadness, confusion, and worry; 2) perceived differences in expressing concerns for diabetes complications; and 3) differences in perceiving the diagnosis as a surprise versus an inevitability. How health care professionals (HCPs) deliver diabetes diagnoses may be crucial to individu

Exposure to West Nile virus during the 2002 epidemic in Cuyahoga County, Ohio: a comparison of pediatric and adult behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence suggests that children are at higher risk for West Nile virus (WNV) exposure, but may have a lower risk for infection-related morbidity and mortality. Limited data exist regarding risk determinants of childhood WNV infection. We conducted a survey to analyze the differences between pediatric and adult behavior relevant to WNV exposure. METHODS: Residents of participating sampled households responded to a questionnaire that measured knowledge, attitudes, personal protective behaviors, and clinical history to evaluate the association between personal behavior and e

Inoculation of two genotypes of Hemobartonella felis (California and Ohio variants) to induce infection in cats and the response to treatment with azithromycin.

OBJECTIVES: To describe clinical and laboratory findings associated with cats experimentally infected by inoculation with the 2 recognized genotypes of Hemobartonella felis (small variant, Hfsm; large variant, Hflg) and to determine the response of cats to treatment with azithromycin. ANIMALS: 18 young adult domestic shorthair cats of both sexes. PROCEDURES: Cats were inoculated with H felis and monitored weekly, using CBC counts and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) designed to detect both genetic variants of H felis. Beginning 26 days after inoculation, 11 cats were administered azithromyc

Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Clermont County, Ohio. II. Distribution of population and infected ticks in an endemic area.

The epidemiology of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in relation to the distribution of the human population and infected ticks has not been defined. A study was undertaken in Clermont County, Ohio, to describe the distribution of population in a highly endemic focus of RMSF and to determine the prevalence of ticks infected with rickettsiae of the spotted fever group. This area was compared to another area of similar size in the same county where the incidence of RMSF was much lower. The population in the highly endemic area was distributed diffusely throughout the area, allowing maximum in…

When Public Will Meets Legislative Resistance: Five Lessons from Ohio's Issue 2 Cannabis Legalization Controversy.

In this paper, I explore the challenges of legalizing cannabis in Ohio, focusing on the passing of the Issue 2 Bill, legislative resistance, and public response. I propose five strategies for effective policy change: persistent advocacy post policy change success, establishing strong coalitions, empowering grassroots movements, promoting rigorous data-driven research, and launching public education campaigns. I offer a detailed analysis of the interaction between public opinion and legislative action in cannabis legalization and its implications for substance-related policy change.
