EARLY MALTREATMENT AND CURRENT QUALITY OF RELATIONAL CARE PREDICT SOCIOEMOTIONAL PROBLEMS AMONG INSTITUTIONALIZED INFANTS AND TODDLERS.

The present study is focused on child socioemotional problems 6 months after institutionalization, by considering the putative predictive role of child maltreatment, of developmental functioning at admission and the following months, and of the quality of institutional relational care. Fifty institutionalized infants and toddlers participated in this study. Child developmental functioning (i.e., cognitive, language, and motor development) was assessed at admission to the institution (Wave 0), and 3 (Wave 1) and 6 months (Wave 2) thereafter. The quality of institutional relational care-operatio

Nature and boundaries of phonologic categories: a case study of an unusual phonologic pattern in a language-impaired child.

This paper presents a detailed examination of an unusual phonologic pattern reflected in the speech of a language-impaired child. The most salient characteristic of this child's speech was the use of [s] in final position of all words except those containing final oral or nasal bilabials. Her pattern seemed best described as reflecting only two canonical forms for word production, CVC and CVCVC, and a dominant word-final category possessing a family resemblance structure with [s] as the prototype. Training was instituted to increase the number of appropriate categories in the child's phonologi

Back pain as the only presenting symptom of intussusception: a case report.

Intussusception can often be a difficult diagnosis as many children do not present with the typical findings of abdominal pain, vomiting, and hematochezia. The authors report the case of a young child who presented with back pain as the only symptom of intussusception. We encourage pediatricians to consider this diagnosis in any child with episodes of intermittent abdominal or back pain.

An instance of excellent response of subcutaneous zygomycosis to itraconazole monotherapy.

Subcutaneous zygomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum. This entity is usually endemic in South India and only limited numbers of cases have been reported from central India. We report a case of 4-year-old male child from Chhattisgarh, who presented with a painless, non-tender, large, subcutaneous swelling of 4 months duration on the right upper arm, which was initially misdiagnosed as benign spindle cell tumor and advised surgical resection. But the fungal culture of the affected tissue grown Basidiobolus ranarum and the child responded very well to itraconazole th

The inter-familiar issues of Greek parents facing childhood cancer.

Cancer as a whole, but especially childhood cancer, creates a number of psychological, social, and family problems as well as practical and financial issues, which every parent is called upon to solve. This study focuses on childhood cancer and aims at a thorough analysis of the physical/organic, psychological, and social problems associated with the parents and relatives of a child with cancer. The special element in pediatric neoplasms is not only the vulnerable population target group, but also the set of secondary effects it has on the environment of the sick child. The research was conduc

Parents' attitudes towards the influenza vaccine and influencing factors.

AIM: To determine what factors are associated with parents' attitudes towards accepting the influenza vaccine for their child. METHODS: Parents' attitudes were measured as part of a pilot randomised controlled trial of influenza vaccination in children attending day care in 2007. Parents and their children were recruited to the study upon a doctor's visit to the day care. A questionnaire elicited beliefs and attitudes towards influenza and vaccination. Descriptive analyses and χ(2) were calculated to determine factors associated with parental attitudes towards the influenza vaccine and with v

[Evaluation of vertical transmission of two species of ureaplasmas in term newborns without respiratory disorders--a preliminary study].

UNLABELLED: Pregnancy promotes ureaplasma vaginal colonization. This creates the possibility of vertical transmission of these organisms to the child. These microorganisms can cause complications during pregnancy and poor condition of newborn. OBJECTIVES: Objectives of this study were to analyze the vertical transmission of different species of ureaplasmas in term newborns without respiratory distress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 50 mothers and 50 of their newborn children. Swabs were obtained from swabs of the cervix in women and tracheal aspirates from neonates. The presence

The effects of perceived daily social and academic failure experiences on school-age children's subsequent interactions with parents.

The hypothesis that perceived failure experiences at school would increase the likelihood of aversive parent-child interactions after school was supported in a study of 167 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Children completed measures of mood, school events, and parent-child interaction 3 times each day for 2 consecutive days. Reports of social and academic failure experiences at school (e.g., peer problems and difficulty with schoolwork) were associated with increases in child self-reports of demanding and aversive behavior toward parents that evening. There was no evidence of the reverse eff

Lifetime abuse victimization and risk of uterine leiomyomata in black women.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine leiomyomata (UL) are a major contributor to gynecologic morbidity and medical costs, and black women are disproportionately affected by the condition. Previous studies have linked UL to psychosocial stress, including child abuse. We assessed the association between lifetime abuse victimization and UL among 9910 premenopausal women. STUDY DESIGN: Data were derived from the Black Women's Health Study, a prospective cohort study. In 2005, participants reported their experiences of physical and sexual abuse within each life stage (childhood, adolescence, adulthood). Biennial fo

Managing children with daytime urinary incontinence: a survey of Dutch general practitioners.

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, parents of children with daytime urinary incontinence (UI) first consult general practitioners (GPs). However, GPs need more specific guidelines for daytime UI management, resulting in care and referral decisions being made without clear guidance. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify Dutch GP considerations when treating and referring a child with daytime UI. METHODS: We invited GPs who referred at least one child aged 4-18 years with daytime UI to secondary care. They were asked to complete a questionnaire about the referred child and the management of daytime UI

Hypogalactia treated with hand expression and translactation without the use of galactagogues.

This case study demonstrates the possibility of treating hypogalactia without using galactagogues. The focus is a female child who, in her first 54 days of life, had a weight gain of only 610 g, with a daily average of 11 g. The child suffered from improper latch-on, insufficient sucking, and consequent excessive drowsiness. During the first clinical visit by the mother, hand expression produced only 5 mL of breast milk. Mother and daughter were assisted daily with the hand expression and translactation method, without the use of any other milk, feeding bottles, or galactagogues. After 2 month

Parent interview findings regarding the impact of cystic fibrosis on families.

An assessment of the impact of cystic fibrosis (CF) was conducted with 43 families. Semistructured parental interviews on family functioning, parent-child interactions, sibling and peer relationships, and medical issues were coded by two independent raters to identify "major," "minor", or "no" problems. Of the 62 questions presented, only 8 were viewed by more than 10% of parents as "major problems." The impact of hospitalization upon parents was the most prevalent "major problem." Parental communication was a "major problem" for 28% of the mothers but for only one father. Ten to 15% of the pa

The association between mothers' psychopathology, childrens' competences and psychological well-being in obese children.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of childhood obesity is rapidly increasing, and many obese children suffer from emotional and behavior problems and mental disorders. Associations with social stigmatization of obesity, maternal psychopathology, socioeconomic status (SES) and resilience factors are discussed. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesize maternal psychopathology to have an impact on the psychological well-being of an obese child. We further hypothesize that competence factors within the child are important key factors that influence the way a child deals with the psychological burden of obesity. METHO

Estimating age: college males versus convicted male child sex offenders.

Two samples, male college students and convicted male child sex offenders, are compared on their abilities to accurately estimate the age group of a series of photographs of a sole female ranging in age from 11 to 29. Both samples tend to overestimate the age group of the subject photos, and no significant difference was found between college students and convicted child sex offenders in their ability to estimate the age of females. Both groups are compared demographically, and only limited differences were found. The implications are discussed in regard to theory and prevention of child sexua

Identifying Targets to Improve Coding of Child Physical Abuse at a Pediatric Trauma Center.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in young children. Identification of abused children is challenging, and can affect risk-adjusted benchmarking of trauma center performance. The purpose of this project was to understand diagnosis coding capture rates for child abuse and develop a standardized approach to clinician documentation to improve trauma registry capture. A retrospective cohort was obtained including all admitted trauma patients with injuries from known or suspected abusive mechanism in 2017. Patients who received forensic workup for child physical abu
