The effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) with different O2 and CO2 concentrations (M40: 40 % O2/60 % CO2 and M80: 80 % O2/20 % CO2) on the bacterial community, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), color, and shelf-life of porcine longissimus muscle (LM) were investigated during 14 days of storage at 4 °C. The results indicated that the LM samples from M40 treatment exhibited significantly (P < 0.05) lower a* and L* values, as well as higher shear force values, compared to the M80 treatment. Notably, the M40 treatment significantly (P < 0.05) inhibited bacterial growth, reduced lipid ox

Microplastics (MPs), pervasive environmental pollutants, have infiltrated human tissues, raising global health concerns. This study investigated the distribution and characteristics of MPs across seven major human organs (lungs, heart, liver, spleen, brain, kidneys, and small intestine) using Raman imaging and machine learning. Tissue samples from eight donors were analyzed for MP presence and characteristics. A deep learning-enhanced U-Net model segmented MPs in Raman images, while a random forest classifier was employed to identify organ-specific MP attribution using 120 imaging features. An

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a multisystem autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation, vasculopathy, and progressive fibrosis, yet the mechanisms underlying specific organ involvement are incompletely understood. Using the bleomycin-osmotic minipump (BLM-MP) mouse model, which recapitulates key clinical and histopathological features of SSc, we investigated whether tissue-specific oxidative stress responses and BLM metabolism are associated with divergent inflammatory and fibrotic remodeling across organs. Male C57BL/6 mice received continuous systemic infusion of BLM or saline for 7 days

We introduce an innovative β-cyclodextrin (βCD)-prototype for delivering nucleic acids: "geometrically frustrated amphiphiles (GFAs)." GFAs are designed with cationic centers evenly distributed across the primary O6 and secondary O2 positions of the βCD scaffold, while hydrophobic tails are anchored at the seven O3 positions. Such distribution of functional elements differs from Janus-type architectures and enlarges the capacity for accessing strictly monodisperse variants. Changes at the molecular level can then be correlated with preferred self-assembly and plasmid DNA (pDNA) co-assembly beh

The clinical course of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is characterized by possible development of both liver and extrahepatic disorders. The tropism of HCV for the lymphoid tissue is responsible for several immune-mediated disorders; a poly-oligoclonal B-lymphocyte expansion, commonly observed in a high proportion of patients with HCV infection, are responsible for the production of different autoantibodies and immune-complexes, such as mixed cryoglobulins. These serological alterations may characterize a variety of autoimmune or neoplastic diseases. Cryoglobulinemic vasculitis due

No longitudinal study has investigated whether autoantibody titres and serum IgG levels correlate with disease activity in autoimmune liver disease. To determine this, we investigated prospectively 19 patients on 254 occasions between 10 months to 5 years from diagnosis. Nine had anti-nuclear and/or anti-smooth muscle antibody (ANA/SMA) positive autoimmune hepatitis (type 1 AIH), 5 liver kidney microsomal type 1 (LKM-1) positive AIH (type 2 AIH) and 5 ANA/SMA positive autoimmune sclerosing cholangitis (ASC). Correlation between IgG levels, titres of ANA, SMA and LKM-1 and levels of the organ s

Deformable image registration plays an important role in radiation therapy, supporting applications such as contour propagation, treatment planning, and motion analysis. However, accurate registration of lung CT images remains challenging in the presence of large respiratory-induced deformations. In this study, we propose RADMorph, a deep learning framework that explicitly models region-dependent motion to improve registration robustness and anatomical consistency under large deformations. RADMorph comprises two key components. The Adaptive Region Feature Encoder (ARFE) learns region-specific

BACKGROUND: In abdominal spectral Computed Tomography (CT), organ dose assessment is important for radiation safety but remains challenging due to the complexity of Monte Carlo (MC) simulations.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the correlations of three size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) metrics (including the central slice SSDEcenter, the mean of all slices SSDEmean, and the organ-specific SSDEorgan) with organ doses and to establish a rapid estimation method for organ dose using linear regression in abdominal spectral CT.
METHODS: Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP6) was used to model the Ge

The fate of T cells is determined through the expression of a unique T cell receptor (TCR). TCR epitope specificity drives spatial localization, phenotypic and metabolic plasticity, effector function, as well as the evolution of complex repertoires of T cell clones. However, human immunology is often restricted to the peripheral blood compartment and neglects 'professional' lymphoid organs. Furthermore, despite the generation of single-cell 'atlases', our knowledge of the epitopes that are recognized by human T cells is largely limited to only a handful of antigenic specificities from conventi

Long COVID (LC), also referred to as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, is characterized by persistent symptoms originating 3 months following acute COVID-19, lasting for at least two months and frequently affecting individuals who initially experienced mild to moderate disease. The clinical spectrum is heterogeneous, involving respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, renal, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems, thereby posing substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Despite extensive investigation, the precise immunopathogenic mechanisms underlying LC remain incomplet

Ionizing radiation, a potent inducer of redox stress, perturbs both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes, yet how such stress shapes mitochondrial inheritance across generations remains unclear. In this study, we examined intergenerational and organ-specific mitochondrial responses to parental X-ray irradiation in mice. Eight-week-old male and female C57BL/6N mice were exposed to 2 Gy of single whole-body X-ray irradiation before mating, generating paternal-, maternal-, and dual-irradiated lineages. In the parents, peripheral blood-derived mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) transiently incre

INTRODUCTION: Anhedonia is a transdiagnostic psychiatric symptom linked to increased functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex and striatum. Here, we examined how dimensions of early adversity contribute to this profile of connectivity.
METHODS: In a European community sample of young adults (IMAGEN), we examined cross-sectional (n=613) and longitudinal (n=332) associations of adversity dimensions with resting-state fMRI-derived connectivity. We selected 10 ROIs from anhedonia literature, defined in the functional images as 4mm-radius spheres. We then used network-based regression

The "healthy drinking" paradox refers to situations where alcohol consumption is misleadingly associated with better health outcomes, a pattern frequently observed in observational studies that are prone to a range of confounding factors. Some recent studies developing organ-specific proteomic aging clocks report that alcohol consumption is linked to slower aging in select organs, even as it accelerates aging in others, thus echoing this paradox, with substantial discrepancies across such studies. In this Perspective, I summarize findings to date, discuss potential reasons for these contradict

Placental insufficiency is a central pathological condition underlying fetal growth restriction and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes during the neonatal period. Although epidemiological and clinical studies have consistently linked compromised placental function to neonatal respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, and infectious morbidity, the mechanisms through which placental insufficiency translates into organ-specific neonatal vulnerability remain unclear. Increasing evidence from human observations and experimental animal models indicates that placental insufficiency disru

Radon inhalation as well as voluntary exercise increase antioxidant function in experimental animals. However, the combined effects of radon inhalation and exercise on antioxidant functions have not yet been investigated. In this study, we examined the effects of combined voluntary wheel running (VWR) and radon inhalation on antioxidant functions in various organs of mice. Mice were individually housed in cages equipped with running wheels, and allowed voluntary exercise for 5, 15, or 25 days, followed by radon inhalation at 2,000 Bq/m3 for 24 h. Antioxidant function was enhanced by the combi

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a group of neuroinflammatory disorders with variable clinical outcomes. Despite the identification of specific neuronal autoantibodies, their clinical presentation and outcomes were significantly variable in clinical practice, suggesting the influence of additional factors beyond the primary autoantibody. Systemic and Organ-Specific autoantibodies (SAOS-Ab) are frequently detected in AE patients, but their clinical role remains incompletely characterized. We hypothesized that the coexistence of SAOS-Ab in AE was associated with a more severe disease c

RNA medicine is an emerging groundbreaking technology for the prevention and treatment of disease. However, tools to deliver messenger RNA (mRNA) and other polyanions (circRNA, saRNA, pDNA, CRISPR-Cas, reprogramming factors) are required to advance current RNA therapies and address next generation challenges. Existing delivery systems often suffer from laborious syntheses, limited organ selectivity, formulation complexity, and undesired inflammatory responses. Here, we report novel mRNA delivery systems termed Discrete Immolative Guanidinium Transporters (DIGITs), which are synthesized converg

Organ bioprinting is a rapidly evolving field designed to address the persistent shortage of donor organs by engineering patient-specific tissues that replicate the function and structure of natural organs. Despite significant technological advancements, bioprinting still faces major obstacles, including tissue rejection, inadequate vascularization, limited physiological functionality, and various ethical and translational challenges. In this review, we assess current bioprinting modalities, particularly extrusion-based printing, inkjet printing, laser-assisted bioprinting (LAB), and stereolit
