Guided eruption of an impacted maxillary right canine: a multidisciplinary case report.

Maxillary canine impaction is a relatively common eruption disturbance that can compromise smile esthetics and functional occlusion. Successful management of impacted canines often requires a multidisciplinary approach combining surgical exposure, orthodontic traction, and radiographic monitoring. A 16-year-old girl presented with a chief concern of dissatisfaction with her smile esthetics. Clinical and radiographic evaluations revealed a palatally impacted maxillary right canine and a retained primary maxillary right canine, which was subsequently extracted. Orthodontic treatment was initiate

Nonsurgical treatment of a Class III patient with a lateral open-bite malocclusion.

A 15.3-year-old white girl with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and a severe lateral open bite was treated with conventional orthodontics and directional force mechanics and elastics. She had 5 congenitally missing premolars. The maxillary right canine was ectopically erupted and in contact with the maxillary right first molar. An Angle Class I molar relationship was achieved with canine protected occlusion and incisal guidance. A wrap-around retainer was placed on the maxillary arch and a lingual bonded retainer on the mandibular arch. Treatment time was 38 months.

Debonding force and deformation of two multi-stranded lingual retainer wires bonded to incisor enamel: an in vitro study.

The aim of the study was to examine, in vitro, the effect of a vertical force on the debond force and deformation of two multi-stranded wires bonded to the lingual enamel of lower incisor teeth. Two different stainless steel wires were used, 0.016 × 0.022 inch (Bond-A-Braid® Reliance Orthodontic Products) and a three-stranded 0.0175 inch wire (Ortho Technology). An in vitro model was used to simulate a vertical force at the interdental wire. Twenty-six pairs of incisors were placed in two groups. A 15 mm length of wire was bonded to the lingual surfaces of each pair of incisors using a common

TMJ in your practice.

The orthodontic population has a high probability of internal joint and muscles of mastication disorders. In the past orthodontics has been performed with modest consideration of the jaw joints. Reasons why braces are not effective in the treatment of TM disorders are explained. Presently increased emphasis is given to the function and health of the TM joints. The aware orthodontist has an opportunity to address TM disorders and improve the quality of life for his or her patients by doing a few things differently before or concurrent with conventional orthodontics. Application of orthotic and

Compensatory orthodontic treatment for maxillary deficiency: a 4-year follow-up.

In this article, we report the orthodontic treatment of a boy (age 12 years 9 months) who had a midface deficiency, a concave facial profile with maxillary retrusion, a complete crossbite (anterior and posterior), and the maxillary right canine retained in the alveolus. Rapid maxillary expansion was performed followed by complete orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances combined with Class III elastics and anterior vertical elastics. Time was allowed to elapse until growth was virtually over before removing the fixed appliances (at age 18 years 4 months), and no retainer of any type was use

Psychosocial impact of hypodontia in children.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the psychosocial impact of hypodontia (multiple dental agenesis) in children and the influence of factors such as severity of hypodontia, number of retained deciduous teeth, age, and sex. The implications of hypodontia for affected patients have been poorly investigated; this, in part, relates to the lack of appropriate measurements to assess the impact of oral conditions on quality of life, particularly among children and adolescents. METHODS: A total of 123 children (49.6% boys, 50.4% girls; mean age, 13.6 years; SD, 1

Clinical crown height changes in mandibular anterior teeth retained with two types of fixed retainers over two years: findings from a randomized clinical trial.

This study aimed to assess longitudinal changes in lingual clinical crown height (CCH) in patients treated with two types of fixed mandibular retainers bonded to all six anterior teeth. This is a secondary analysis of a randomized, parallel-group clinical trial conducted in a single center, including 133 orthodontic patients (median age 24.6 years; interquartile range: 17.2-32.4 years). Participants were allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive either a three-strand round twisted (RT) wire or an eight-strand rectangular braided (RB) wire retainer. The primary outcome in this analysis was the change

Premature loss of primary molars in children: space recovery through molar distalisation. A literature review.

AIM: The integrity of primary dentition is essential in the development of the jaws and permanent occlusion. The consequences of a premature loss of primary molars are: space loss, crowding, risk of impaction of the permanent teeth, ectopic eruption, anomalous inclination of the teeth adjacent to the loss molar, reduction of arch length. The mesial displacement of the posterior permanent teeth during eruption can cause a loss of space, which can be regained with orthodontic appliances. Therefore, a careful diagnosis is of great importance to be able to decide what appliance is indicated to rec

Effects of topical administration of a bisphosphonate (risedronate) on orthodontic tooth movements in rats.

In orthodontics, undesirable movement of anchor teeth during tooth movement and relapse of moved teeth after treatment are the main causes of unsuccessful results. If these tooth movements could be prevented with pharmacological agents, a less complex orthodontic force system and less extensive retention would be required. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of topical administration of a bisphosphonate (risedronate), a potent blocker of bone resorption, on orthodontic tooth movements in rats. In the first experiment, both the right and left upper first molars were moved buccal

Treatment of a horizontal open bite with an invisible multiloop appliance in a girl with tooth trauma.

This case report presents the treatment of a girl with a Class II horizontal open bite and severe crowding with an invisible appliance. She had been in a severe traffic accident at 5 years 10 months of age. Her teeth, especially the mandibular right lateral incisor, canine, and first premolar had ankylosed, and their roots were severely resorbed and fused to the alveolar bone. Orthodontic treatment started at the age of 12 years. The mandibular left first premolar and both maxillary first premolars were extracted to reduce overjet and crowding. The left first premolar was extracted and transpl
