The maxillary permanent canine has a long path of eruption and can become displaced, leading to displacement on the palatal side and failure of eruption. We highlight current diagnostic strategies to help monitor eruption of this tooth and discuss potential interceptive measures to promote eruption in the presence of displacement. We further investigate the current evidence base with meta-analysis and provide a guide for the general dental practitioner based upon these data. In particular, extraction of the primary canine to normalise the eruptive position of a palatal displaced maxillary cani

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a severe disease of childhood, which comprises a diverse group of distinct clinical entities of unclear aetiology. Some abnormality of the immune system is present in all JIA cases. In its most severe clinical form, JIA may show localised and/or systemic complications, including functional impairment of the affected sites. This may result in variable growth and developmental anomalies. In many JIA cases, where the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is affected, mandibular growth may be restricted, thus leading to the development of mandibular hypoplasia and/or

Dentoalveolar ankylosis, the fusion of a tooth with the alveolar bone, is often associated with primary molars and is the main cause of infraocclusion. This report describes an uncommon case of a severely infraoccluded primary first molar associated with loss of space in the maxilla. After anamnesis and a clinical examination, absence of the primary maxillary left first molar was observed. Periapical radiographs revealed a primary molar completely submerged under the gingiva. Cone beam computed tomography was performed to determine the proximity of the ankylosed tooth to the germ of the perman

Dental transpositions are rare anomalies, which may present to the general dental practitioner or orthodontist. Transpositions occur less frequently in the mandible compared with the maxilla, with the most common mandibular transposition involving the mandibular lateral incisor and canine. The degree of displacement can vary from a relatively minor deviation to complete transposition of the mandibular lateral incisor with the adjacent canine tooth. Due to their highly visible position at the front of the mouth, treatment, ideally involving alignment of these teeth, is important for aesthetic,

This study determined the oral health status of a group of 3-8-year-old South African black children, comprising a total of 214 children from the townships of Garankuwa, Shosanguwe, Mabopane, Hebron and Erasmus who attended a school in Akasia, Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Substructure. The decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft), oral hygiene status, dental IQ and malocclusion status were determined. The study found that the children's oral health status and occlusal status were unacceptable. The level of their dental IQ scores was low, their oral hygiene poor, and they were in urgent need o

This review aims to present updated evidence on different modifications of distal shoe space maintainers, which will aid in optimizing patient outcomes and standardizing procedures. Distal shoe space maintainer therapy is needed to prevent space loss and guide the eruption of the permanent first molar when the primary second molar is lost prematurely before the eruption of the permanent first molar. Studies assessing the efficacy of different distal shoe space maintainer adjustments in children with mixed dentition were found through a thorough search of electronic databases. Data extraction a

BACKGROUND: The concomitant occurrence of hypodontia and hyperdontia is a rare clinical phenomenon. This report describes the multidisciplinary management of a non-syndromic 8-year-old patient presenting with a complex combination of gemination, bilateral missing mandibular lateral incisors, supplemental maxillary canines, ankyloglossia, and multiple hyperplastic frena.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old female was referred for the management of ankyloglossia. Clinical and radiographic assessments, utilizing panoramic imaging and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), identified bilateral supern

Class III malocclusion represents a growth-related dentofacial deformity with mandibular prognathism in relation to the maxilla and/or cranial base. Its prevalence varies greatly among and within different races, ethnic groups, and geographic regions studied. Class III malocclusion has a multifactorial etiology, which is the expression of a moderate distortion of normal development as a result of interaction between innate factors or genetic hereditary with environmental factors. Various skeletal topographies of underlying Class III malocclusion are due to discrepancy in the maxillary and mand

Controlling the eruption and development of dentitions is fundamental for a good oral health. The early diagnosis and adequate treatment of occasional developmental disorders are essential to achieve occlusal, functional and esthetic harmony. Abnormality is the term used for classification of alterations and is the most common developmental anomaly in humans. Even though several factors causing tooth malformations have been identified, many are still partially understood, thus requiring a more thorough study. Anyway, the available knowledge provides bases to attempt the early diagnosis of toot

The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the dentofacial effects of 1 week rapid palatal expansion (RPE) and activation-deactivation (A/D) RPE protocols with reverse headgear (RH). Two groups, each containing 15 subjects, were included in this study. In the RPE group (seven males and eight females, 11.94 ± 1.62 years), Hyrax screws were activated every 12 hours for 1 week. At the end of this period, RPE was stopped and the patients were instructed to wear the RH. In the A/D-RPE group (seven males and eight females, 11.34 ± 1.81 years), the screws were activated every 12 hours for 1 we

The aim of this study was to assess whether interceptive treatment in the mixed dentition prevents impaction of palatally displaced canines (PDC) by systematically reviewing the literature. A literature search of PubMed, the Cochrane Library electronic databases, and Scopus was performed covering the period from January 1966 to May 2009. The inclusion criteria were mixed dentition with unilateral or bilateral PDC, randomized controlled trials (RCT), prospective and retrospective studies with untreated controls, and clinical trials comparing at least two treatment strategies. Three reviewers se

The authors present clinical and radiographic measures for the early detection of potential maxillary canine Impaction. Intercepting the impaction process by timely removal of the primary canines, as demonstrated in several representative cases, allows the permanent canines to erupt normally and, thus, prevents their potential impaction.

Within the scope of a follow-up examination, the speech development of 2 different groups of children with trisomy 21 was compared. The patient group (n = 20) was treated with a Castillo-Morales stimulating plate in early childhood (average treatment time = 10.8 months, average age at follow-up examination: 55 months). The control group (average age 47.4 months) comprised 18 children with Down's syndrome who had ceased stimulating plate treatment after one month or had received no treatment because, although treatment proved in retrospect to be indicated, parents were not adequately informed.

The authors describe a patient with bilateral Tessier no. 6 and no. 7 clefts. The case consists of macrostomia combined with maxillary, zygomatico-orbito-temporal deformities, dental anomalies and mandibular retrusion. In addition, the cleft is located bilaterally in the maxillary arch with a double deciduous posterior dentition. This is rare. The clinical and radiological features are reported and the treatment plans are discussed.

Orthodontic treatments are usually performed using fixed brackets or removable oral appliances, which are traditionally made from alginate impressions and wax registrations. Among removable devices, eruption guidance appliances are used for early orthodontic treatments in order to intercept and prevent malocclusion problems. Commercially available eruption guidance appliances, however, are symmetric devices produced using a few standard sizes. For this reason, they are not able to meet all the specific patient's needs since the actual dental anatomies present various geometries and asymmetric

AIM: This cross-sectional study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of malocclusion and associated factors in preschoolers with the aim of assessing the existence of an association between bad habits and mouth breathing with the most severe malocclusions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 1616 children aged 3-6 years was visited by applying the Baby ROMA index, an orthodontic treatment need index for preschool age. The following were searched: the prevalence of malocclusion, the association of bad habits and mouth breathing with malocclusion, how often are found in association and how

Cleidocranial dysostosis (CCD) is a congenital skeletal disorder with significant manifestations in facial and dental development. Patients are affected with CCD present maxillary deficiency, late dental eruption, and supernumerary teeth. Early and multidisciplinary approach is necessary to treat CCD patients, especially to manage dental eruption and Class III malocclusion with maxillary deficiency. Several orthodontic and surgical interventions are performed to enable traction and extraction of teeth. Yet the maxillary deficiency may be protracted followed by orthodontic dental compensation.
