BACKGROUND: Placement of interradicular orthodontic miniscrews poses a potential risk of root damage, including superficial root contact and root fracture. This case report describes the iatrogenic root-injured tooth movement of a 27-year-old male with skeletal Class III malocclusion as nonsurgical orthodontic treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: An orthodontic miniscrew between the mandibular right first and second molars perforated the distal root of the mandibular first molar. A root fracture was discovered 4 months after miniscrew placement. Owing to the potential risk of ankylosis related to su

The current review aims to evaluate the scientific evidence relating to the effectiveness of treatment with clear aligners (CAs) in controlling distalization orthodontic tooth movement. "Orthodontics, aligners" and "distalization" were the search terms used on the Scopus, Web of Science and Pubmed databases with the Boolean operator "AND". The results of the last ten years of research were 146 studies; of these, 19 publications were included for this review. The distalization movement is possible with invisible masks alone, but the risk of losing anchorage in the anterior sectors is very proba

AIM: Bad habits result in altered functions which with time can cause anomalies of the orofacial morphology. To solve these problems, orthodontic treatment can be supported by myofunctional therapy in order to recover the normal functionality of the oral muscles. The aim of this study is to assess the need to treat patients with neuromuscular disorders, from both the occlusion and the muscles condition approach in order to obtain the balance needed for the stability of treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A sample of 23 patients with atypical swallowing was included in this study, some of them p

In this consecutive series, 14 patients with severe intrabony defects and pathologic tooth migration were treated with guided tissue regeneration (GTR) and subsequent orthodontic therapy in an attempt to evaluate the validity of this multidisciplinary approach. Probing pocket depths (PPD), clinical attachment levels (CAL), and gingival recessions were assessed at baseline, 1 year after GTR, and at the end of orthodontic therapy. Radiographs were obtained at all time points. Esthetic parameters were recorded with the papilla presence index (PPI). Statistical analyses were carried out to compare

Intrusive luxation of a permanent maxillary central incisor is an uncommon yet highly challenging dental injury, often associated with extensive periodontal ligament (PDL) damage, pulpal necrosis, and an increased risk of root resorption. This case report details the comprehensive management of a severely intruded maxillary central incisor in a nine-year-old patient using controlled orthodontic extrusion. Clinical and radiographic evaluation confirmed significant apical displacement without evidence of crown or root fracture. Given the depth of intrusion and the stage of root development, orth

The aim of the study was to investigate the needs of children of various Crimean regions in orthodontic care. The epidemiological survey involved 125 children under the age of 12 years old living in the regions of Crimea with different levels of medical and social conditions (Alushta, Simferopol, Lenin and the Krasnogvardeisky district). The two-component IOTN index was used in investigation. Children of regional municipal areas showed higher severity of malocclusion and the need in orthodontic care than their urban peers (p<0.01 for Pearson χ2 criterion). A large part of the surveyed demonstr

Modulation of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is desirable not only to patients because it shortens treatment time, but also to orthodontists, since treatment duration is associated with increased risk of gingival inflammation, decalcification, dental caries, and root resorption. The increased focus on the biological basis of tooth movement has rendered Orthodontics a more comprehensive specialty that incorporates facets of all fields of medicine. Current knowledge raises the possibility of using new therapeutic modalities for modulation of OTM, such as corticotomy, laser therapy, vibration (

Transmigration of mandibular canine teeth is a rare dental anomaly characterized by the tooth's aberrant migration through the alveolar bone. This deviation from the expected eruption pathway can lead to tooth impaction, root resorption, periodontal problems, and aesthetic concerns. The exact cause of transmigration is not fully understood, but it is believed to be influenced by a combination of genetic, developmental, and environmental factors. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent complications and achieve optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes. This case repo

This case report describes a 15-year-old boy born with a cleft lip and alveolus who sustained severe extrusive and lateral luxation trauma to multiple incisors during the final phase of orthodontic treatment. The displacement caused incisal interference and prevented normal jaw closure. Deformed beta titanium wires were removed, loosened brackets were rebonded, and immediate orthodontic repositioning was initiated using light forces with 0.014-inch CuNiTi round wires combined with manual repositioning. This approach resolved the incisal interference and restored functional occlusion within 1 w

Objective The present study quantitatively evaluated and compared bacterial counts between spot-welded and laser-welded orthodontic bands. The need for the study arose from concerns that conventional spot-welded orthodontic bands may create irregular surfaces and microgaps that favor plaque accumulation and bacterial colonization, thereby increasing the risk of enamel decalcification and periodontal inflammation during orthodontic treatment. Laser welding has been proposed as an alternative technique capable of producing smoother and more precise joints with potentially reduced bacterial reten

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of polydopamine (PDA) functionalization on orthodontic brackets in inhibiting biofilm formation and promoting surface bioactivity to buffer the acidity of caries-causing bacteria around orthodontic brackets and prevent demineralization. The stability of the coating in artificial saliva (AS) and distilled water was evaluated, along with its effect on pH changes in simulated body fluid (SBF) and distilled water.
METHODS: Maxillary incisor orthodontic brackets underwent PDA functionalization using a dopamine hydrochloride solution following a

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic apical root resorption usually presents as a chance radiographic finding. It may be widespread, affecting the majority of teeth, with implications for the longevity of the dentition.
CASE REPORT: Three cases of significant idiopathic apical resorption resulting, respectively, in prevention, abandonment, and alternative methods of orthodontic treatment are described.
CONCLUSION: Significant idiopathic resorption may present as a chance radiographic finding, as pain, or excessive mobility. The prognosis for affected teeth is often poor with very limited scope for orthodo

Gingival recessions represent the most visible periodontal disease. The prevalence of gingival recessions is high. The root surface is literally exposed to negative influences such as erosion, abrasion, discoloration and decay. Moreover, gingival recessions can affect the quality of life by increased thermal sensitivity and reduced dento-gingival aesthetics. The aetiology of gingival recessions is complex and considered to be multifactorial. In order to prevent the development of gingival recessions during and after orthodontic treatment, several factors should be taken into account, among whi

Over the past 10 years, orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) has been increasingly recognized as an iatrogenic consequence of orthodontic treatment. With this in mind, orthodontists should take all known measures to reduce the occurrence of OIIRR. The evidence that we present in this review suggests several procedures known today that can avert this phenomenon; however, none of them can be relied on to completely prevent OIIRR. We believe that future studies might clarify the exact cause and course of OIIRR and, hopefully, help eliminate it. In Part I, we discussed the
