Recurrent lipoatrophic panniculitis of children.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent panniculitis in children with lipoatrophy has been loosely described and reported under different names, but has never been systematically evaluated by immunohistochemical stains. OBJECTIVE: To depict the profile of children with recurrent idiopathic panniculitis. METHODS: Study of clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical features in five cases with recurrent idiopathic panniculitis. Lupus Erythematosus Panniculitis in Pregnancy.

A case of lupus erythematosus (LE) panniculitis in pregnancy without any lesions of discoid LE or systemic LE is being reported. There were no systemic symptoms. Her ANA, anti-dsDNA, anti-Ro/SSA, and anti-La/SSB antibodies were within normal limits. Diagnosis of lupus panniculitis was considered on clinical and histopathological grounds. The condition responded favorably to systemic steroid therapy.

Mesenteric panniculitis: a paraneoplastic phenomenon?

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric panniculitis is an inflammatory condition of mesenteric adipose tissue with characteristic features on abdominal CT imaging. Although its cause is unknown, it has been associated with malignancy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malignancy in patients identified as having mesenteric panniculitis on CT imaging and to identify demographic, clinical, and radiological features that may predict an unknown underlying malignancy. DESIGN: This study is a retrospective analysis of medical records and imaging. SETTING: This study was conducted…

Intravenous immunoglobulin in lupus panniculitis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a disease of unknown cause that may involve one or many organ or systems. Skin involvement is a major feature in this disease, and a wide variety of skin conditions may be present. Lupus erythematosus panniculitis (LEP) constitutes a rare form of cutaneous lupus characterized by recurrent nodular or plaque lesions that can vary from a benign and mild course to a more disfiguring disease. Initial therapy includes corticosteroids, antimalarials, and azathioprine and, in refractory cases, two antimalarials in association, mycophenolate mofetil, or other immun…

Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency panniculitis.

Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is a congenital error of metabolism linked to pulmonary (emphysema) and liver (cirrhosis) disease. Since 1972, panniculitis has been associated with this deficiency, initially related to Weber-Christian syndrome and finally as a differentiated entity. Clinical manifestations typically consist of wide nodular lesions on the trunk and proximal extremities that evolve to ulceration and drainage. Histopathologically it presents as a mixed septal-lobular panniculitis pattern with some typical findings referred. Differential diagnosis from other types of panniculitis a…

[Two cases of mesenteric panniculitis].

Two patients with mesenteric panniculitis are presented. In the first patient, a provisional diagnosis of ileus was made, based on the clinical features and imaging data. Laparotomic findings showed that the ileum was bound tightly by a fibrous strip and dilated, with thickened and swollen mesentery. Incision of the fibrous strip was performed, and the clinical symptoms were improved. The second patient was strongly suspected to have mesenteric panniculitis, from characteristic features on abdominal computed tomography and barium enema. Conservative therapy was effective in this case. We empha…

Lupus panniculitis involving the breast.

Lupus panniculitis is an unusual immunological disease that characteristically affects the subcutaneous fat and occurs in 2% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. We report a case of lupus panniculitis involving the breast, which represents a very uncommon location. Mammographically, it presented as a suspicious irregular mass involving the subcutaneous fat pad with skin thickening. High echogenicity constituted the most relevant sonographic finding. To the best of our knowledge, the magnetic resonance (MR) features have not been previously described. High signal intensity was found o…
