OBJECTIVES: To investigate the negative chronotropic response (NCR) to low-dose atropine in postoperative patients with congenital heart disease (CHD).
BACKGROUND: Low-dose atropine causes a NCR through the central nervous system muscarinic receptor and is attenuated in adult heart failure patients. It has never been evaluated in CHD patients.
METHODS: NCR corrected for basal heart rate (HR) (minimal HR/basal HR=cNCR) was determined after low-dose atropine (3 microg/kg) administration in 124 postoperative CHD patients (97 biventricular repair and 27 Fontan patients) and 11 controls and was c

BACKGROUND: The central nervous origins of functional parasympathetic innervation of cardiac ventricles remain controversial.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify a population of vagal preganglionic neurons that contribute to the control of ventricular excitability. An animal model of synuclein pathology relevant to Parkinson's disease was used to determine whether age-related loss of the activity of the identified group of neurons is associated with changes in ventricular electrophysiology.
METHODS: In vivo cardiac electrophysiology was performed in anesthetized rats in conditions of sel

Autonomic dysfunction may result from diseases that affect primarily either the central nervous system or the peripheral autonomic nervous system. The most common pathogenesis of disturbed autonomic function in central nervous system diseases is degeneration of the intermediolateral cell columns (progressive autonomic failure) or disease or damage to descending pathways that synapse on the intermediolateral column cells (spinal cord lesions, cerebrovascular disease, brainstem tumors, multiple sclerosis). The peripheral autonomic nervous system may be damaged in isolation in the acute and subac

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) exhibits marked biological heterogeneity and remains a major cause of cancer-related death in women. With advances in molecular subtyping and tumor microenvironment research, the nervous system has emerged as an important regulator of BC initiation, progression, and metastasis. Tumor-associated nerves influence cancer not only locally through sympathetic, parasympathetic, and sensory innervation, but also systemically by modulating immunity via psychological stress, circadian rhythms, and neuroendocrine pathways.
RESULTS: Increasing evidence shows that nerve fib

INTRODUCTION: The pupillary light reflex (PLR) indicates the function of the autonomic nervous system, which causes the pupil to constrict and dilate. Evaluation of the PLR determines the parasympathetic and sympathetic balance. We aimed to demonstrate autonomic changes by pupillometry in Parkinson'd disease (PD) and to investigate the relationship between the changes and motor stage and levodopa equivalent dose (LEDD).
METHOD: Static pupillometry measurement was performed at scotopic, mesopic and photopic settings. Dynamic pupillometry measurement was performed at 500 lux illumination and pu

Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy associated with diabetes mellitus is caused by an impairment of the autonomic system. The prevalence of this condition ranges from 20% to 65%, depending on the duration of the diabetes mellitus. Clinically, the autonomic function disorder is associated with resting tachycardia, exercise intolerance, orthostatic hypotension, intraoperative cardiovascular instability, silent myocardial ischemia and increased mortality. For the diagnosis, the integrity of the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system is assessed. Parasympathetic activity is examined by mea

BACKGROUND: Although aging is known to be associated with an increased incidence of both atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, there is limited knowledge about how Schwann cells (SC) and the intracardiac nervous system (iCNS) remodel with age. Here we investigate the differences in cardiac SC, parasympathetic nerve fibers, and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M2 (M2R) expression in young and old mice. Additionally, we examine age-related changes in cardiac responses to sympathomimetic and parasympathomimetic drugs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Lower SC density, lower SC proliferation and fewer parasym

The global obesity epidemic underscores the urgent need to elucidate the mechanisms underlying metabolic disorders. Although excessive caloric intake and sedentary lifestyles have traditionally been viewed as primary contributors, recent evidence highlights significant roles for genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. Notably, dysfunction within the central nervous system (CNS), particularly the hypothalamus, has emerged as a crucial regulator of metabolic homeostasis through CNS-peripheral interactions. Hypothalamic inflammation is primarily mediated by microgliosis, which disrupts

Alterations in the central nervous system in cancer patients are pivotal in determining appetite dysregulation and body weight loss (BWL). Autonomic nervous system activity was tested by measuring heart rate variability (HRV) in cancer patients presenting with anorexia. We considered inpatients with different types of cancer and investigated anorexia using their FAACT scores. HRV was evaluated by a three-channel Holter ECG. The domains of low frequencies (LF, sympathetic activity) and high frequencies (HF, parasympathetic activity) were calculated. Also, SDNN (autonomic activity) and RMSSD (pa

The nose provides defensive and homeostatic functions requiring rapid responses to physical and chemical stimuli. As a result, it is armed with a complex nervous system that includes sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic nerves. Sensory nerves transmit signals from the mucosa, generating sensations, such as pruritus; motor reflexes, such as sneezing; and parasympathetic and sympathetic reflexes that affect the glandular and vascular nasal apparatuses. Reflexes directed to the nose are also generated by inputs from other body regions. Hence all symptoms that constitute the nosologic entity

Inflammation and gut dysbiosis are hallmarks of hypertension (HTN). Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important freely diffusing molecule that modulates the function of neural, cardiovascular and immune systems, and circulating levels of H2S are reduced in animals and humans with HTN. While most research to date has focused on H₂S produced endogenously by the host, H2S is also produced by the gut bacteria and may affect the host homeostasis. Here, we review an association between neuroinflammation and gut dysbiosis in HTN, with special emphasis on a potential role of H2S in this interplay.

BACKGROUND: Feeding evokes a cardiovascular response associated to an increased sympathetic drive. The role of the parasympathetic component in this regard is less clear. Improvement of postprandial vasovagal complaints after Helicobacter pylori eradication in three cases led us to assess autonomic response to feeding in H. pylori-positive patients in search for an exacerbated parasympathetic response.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with mild or moderate chronic histologic gastritis were studied. Subjects with the same diagnosis but testing negative for H. pylori were used as controls. Noninv

OBJECTIVE: Alterations in autonomic function are evident in some chronic pain conditions but have not been thoroughly examined in people with osteoarthritis (OA). The study aimed to examine resting autonomic nervous system (ANS) function in people with knee OA, and the response of the autonomic and nociceptive systems to acute stress.
METHODS: A preliminary cross-sectional study was undertaken involving people with knee OA (n = 14), fibromyalgia (n = 13), and pain-free controls (n = 15). The sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the ANS were assessed through measures of pre-ejection p

CONTEXT: Cancer cachexia occurs in most patients suffering from solid malignancies. Recent works suggest paraneoplastic mechanisms. Empirical studies also found autonomic dysfunction in cancer patients, but comprehensive evaluation of the peripheral nervous system is lacking.
OBJECTIVES: To further understand the role of the autonomic and peripheral nervous system in cancer cachexia to guide treatment.
METHODS: We prospectively investigated cachectic cancer patients for parasympathetic autonomic dysfunction with a time-domain-based analysis of heart rate variability (breathing at rest, deep

1. Continuous stimulation of the preganglionic parasympathetic nerve (the ramus communicans of the mandibular ganglion) for 1-2 min at supramaximal voltage (5 V) and pulse duration (1 ms) increased salivary gland arterial inflow and this was accompanied by copious salivary secretion. The responses were recorded continuously during the period of stimulation. The frequency for initiating the responses was 0.5 Hz. Maximal responses occurred at 16 Hz. The response coefficient of arterial inflow to stimulus frequency was 0.17 ml min-1g-1 Hz-1 and that of secretion to stimulus frequency was 0.016 ml

Several previous investigations have shown that blebs form on the apical surface of the striated duct cells of the rat submandibular gland on feeding after starvation. In the present report the influence of autonomic nerve stimulation on bleb formation was studied by electron microscopy. Both parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation were performed, using electric nerve stimulation. In addition, sympathetic nerve stimulation in combination with alpha- or beta-adrenergic blockers was used. Massive bleb formation took place in response to sympathetic nerve stimulation. This response was almost

This article reviews the neuroanatomical studies on the distribution of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in neurons and nerve fibers innervating the submandibular gland. Specificity of NADPH-diaphorase activity as a histochemical marker of neuronal NOS is discussed in light of corresponding NOS immunoreactivity. Anatomical data suggest that nitric oxide may affect neural regulation of the submandibular gland through both sympathetic, parasympathetic and sensory divisions of the autonomic nervous system. NOS-containing nerve terminals in the gland parenchyme are mainly vascular and either parasympat
