Parenting quality and children's mental health: biological mechanisms and psychological interventions.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The quality of parenting that children receive can have a profound influence on their development and mental health. This article reviews articles published from late 2010 onwards that address the effects of parenting on the child's physiological and genetic systems, and how interventions can improve children's security of attachments, antisocial behaviour and other outcomes across a range of settings. RECENT FINDINGS: Biological indices of stress, such as C-reactive protein, show that prenatal anxiety is a significant determinant of later outcomes for children, and abusive…

Personality and job stress: a comparison of direct effects on parenting.

The impact of personality and job characteristics on parental rearing styles was compared in 353 employees. Hypotheses concerning the relationships between personality and job variables were formulated in accordance with findings in past research and the Belsky's model (1984). Structural equation nested models showed that Aggression-hostility, Sociability and job Demand were predictive of Rejection and Emotional Warmth parenting styles, providing support for some of the hypothesized relationships. The findings suggest a well-balanced association of personality variables with both parenting sty…

Latent growth trajectories of substance use among pregnant and parenting adolescents.

We examine changes among adolescent girls in substance use during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Three separate latent growth curve analyses assessed the impact of psychosocial, behavioral, and sociodemographic factors on resumption of or change in use of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana. The Vulnerable Populations Model for Research and Clinical Practice (Flaskerud & Winslow, 1998) provided the theoretical foundation for this study. This is a secondary analysis of data from a sample of 305 ethnic minority females (245 Latina, 60 African American), aged 13-18 years, who were pregnant a

Parenting adults who become homeless: variations in stress and social support.

This article focuses on the stressors of parenting an adult child who experiences homelessness. Parents whose adult children become homeless may provide support to this child, but they may also subsequently experience stress and require social support themselves. Findings from this study support the hypothesis that parents who spend more time or money helping their homeless adult offspring experience higher levels of stress. Results also show higher levels of stress among parents who helped with activities of daily living and among parents who worked to prevent harm involving their adult homel…

Substance use among women: associations with pregnancy, parenting, and race/ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of pregnancy and parenting (0- to 2-year-old child) statuses with past 30-day use of alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana, psychotherapeutics and cocaine among American women aged 18-44, overall and by race/ethnicity. METHODS: Five years of data (2002-2006) from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) were pooled. Binary logistic regression analyses stratified by race/ethnicity were performed to examine the relationships adjusting for age, marital status, education and family income. RESULTS: Overall, past 30-day alcohol, cigarette, marijuana, ps…

Parenting: linking impacts of interpartner conflict to preschool children's social behavior.

Family conflict is known to have detrimental impacts on the social development of young children. An important issue in counseling parents and the development of intervention for children is the extent to which other family environmental conditions are the path through which conflict impacts children's development. This study examined two maternal parenting behaviors (harsh discipline and warmth) that may alter the impact of interpartner conflict on child social development and behavior in a large (n = 440 girls, n = 451 boys) sample of ethnically diverse, low-income families of preschool chil…

Parenting, attention and externalizing problems: testing mediation longitudinally, repeatedly and reciprocally.

BACKGROUND: Building on prior work, this paper tests, longitudinally and repeatedly, the proposition that attentional control processes mediate the effect of earlier parenting on later externalizing problems. METHODS: Repeated independent measurements of all three constructs--observed parenting, computer-tested attentional control and adult-reported externalizing problems--were subjected to structural equation modeling using data from the large-scale American study of child care and youth development. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling indicated (a) that greater maternal sensitivity at tw…

Safeguarding precarious survival: parenting children who have life-threatening heart disease.

The purpose of this study is to describe the process of parenting a child with life-threatening heart disease. Despite advances in pediatric cardiac sciences, hypoplastic left heart syndrome remains difficult and controversial to treat. The Norwood surgical approach is a developing technology, and little is known about how mothers and fathers experience parenting a child who survives this treatment. Constructivist grounded theory informed this Canadian study that involved multiple interactive interviews with 9 mothers and 7 fathers of children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who were at v…

Examining the association between parenting and childhood anxiety: a meta-analysis.

Theoretical models emphasize the role of parenting in the development and maintenance of child anxiety, but reviews of the empirical literature have provided mixed support for existing theories. To help clarify the role parenting plays in childhood anxiety, we conducted a meta-analysis of 47 studies testing the association between parenting and child anxiety. Across these studies, parenting accounted for only 4% of the variance in child anxiety. Moderator tests indicated that methodological factors (i.e., how child anxiety and parenting were conceptualized and assessed) may be a source of inco…

Associations among distorted cognitions and hypothetical parenting responses prior to parenthood.

Using path analytic methods, the present study used two social-cognitive models of maladaptive parenting to predict endorsements of child punishment in a sample of 101 young adults who had not yet become parents. Participants completed paper-and-pencil measures of expectations, attributions, current aggression, and responses to vignettes about child rearing and social situations. Results suggest that working models of parent-child relationships are related in predictable ways to endorsements of cognitive and behavioral responses toward children in vignettes, even in adults who are not yet pare…

Mothers' experiences of living worried when parenting children with spina bifida.

This study describes the lived experience of mothers of children with spina bifida. Thirteen mothers of children between the ages of 12 and 18 years participated in at-home, audiotaped interviews. Each participant was asked to describe, through narrative, what it is like to be the mother of a child with spina bifida. The researcher used Heideggerian hermeneutical methodology to transcribe and analyze interview texts. Examination of the data revealed the constitutive pattern living worried and its two relational themes: treating them like other children and staying in the struggle. Nurses can u

Short-term effects of teenage parenting programs on knowledge and attitudes.

The short-term effects of teenage parenting programs upon the knowledge and attitudes of pregnant teenagers were assessed. The programs studied produced a significant change in the teenagers' knowledge of sexuality and child development while having no apparent effect on the teenagers' parenting attitudes. The implications of producing changes in knowledge without accompanying changes in attitudes are discussed.

Parental recommendations for cochlear implants: A qualitative study of parental experiences.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing parents who lack knowledge regarding hearing loss and medical intervention typically experience disorientation and stress when their child is diagnosed with hearing loss and needs a cochlear implant (CI). This study aims to document recommendations experienced parents may provide to new parents based on their experiences. METHODS: Sixteen parents of children with CI were interviewed, with the children's chronological age ranging between 26 and 91 months, averaging 11.7 months (standard deviation = 8.0) at the age of deafness diagnosis. Open-ended questions were asked to enc

A systematic review of parental burnout and related factors among parents.

BACKGROUND: Parenting is both a complex and stressful endeavor, so parents sometimes experience parenting burnout. The main objective of this study was to provide an overview of factors related to general parental burnout (PB) among parents with at least one child based on the Ecological Systems Theory (EST). METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, CNKI and WanFang were systematically searched for studies published from 2010 to July 2023 for peer-reviewed articles using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings such as "parenting", "parental", "burnout", "psychological burnout", "burn-…

The experience of parenting a child with dyslexia - A UK perspective with single parents.

Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that affects the development of literacy and language-related skills, unrelated to intellectual ability. While the impact of parenting an individual with dyslexia (IWD) for married parents has been widely studied, little is known about the impact on single parents. This study explored the lived experiences of single parents of an IWD. Six female participants completed semi-structured interviews discussing their experience of the diagnostic process, support received and general parenting perspectives. Interview transcripts were analysed using Interpret…
