Yolk sac tumors (YST) (or endodermal sinus tumors) are rare neoplasms of germ cell origin that have been reported in gonadal sites (testis and ovary). Extragonadal YST are uncommon and are extremely rare in the extracranial head-and-neck regions. Here, we present a rare case of a 1-year-old male with isolated YST of the right parotid gland initially diagnosed as malignant epithelial neoplasm with possibilities of mucoepidermoid carcinoma and epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma.

The authors reviewed the clinical records and the histopathological preparations of 78 cases of Warthin's tumours (WTs), treated at the Department of Dental Sciences, Centre for the Study of Oral Tumours, of the University of Bari. All the surgical specimens had been fixed in neutral buffered formalin, sampled according to the step-serial, whole-specimen sectioning technique, embedded in paraffin and stained with haematoxylin-eosin, periodic acid Schiff and Gomori's reticulin. The results showed that Warthin's tumours characteristically affect the parotid gland, and most frequently arise in ad

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMCa) is a rare neoplasm that most frequently afflicts the parotid gland. Histologically, a dual layer of inner, luminal epithelial cells and outer myoepithelial cells with associated background hyalinization characterize these tumors. Several variants of EMCa have been described, including the more recent description of the apocrine variant. We present here a case of a 71-year-old male with a parotid mass diagnosed on FNA as an apocrine epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing the cytomorphologic feature

BACKGROUND: Myoepthelioma is a rare salivary gland tumor which is usually located in parotid gland and in minor salivary glands.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of myoepithelioma arising in an accessory paritid gland in a 47-yearold woman who presented with a slowly expanding subcutaneous nodule on the left cheek, that was within the parotid gland at surgical resection . This tumor was composed of spindle cells. Immunophenotypical characterization demonstrated its myoepithelial nature.
CONCLUSION: In the subcutaneous tissue, this unusual neoplasm may be confused with soft tissue tumors showing

The ordinary lipoma is the most common neoplasm of mesenchymal origin. Only 13% of them arise in the head and neck region and most of these occur subcutaneously in the posterior neck. Rarely, they can develop in the anterior neck, infratemporal fossa, and in or around the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and parotid gland. Clinically, they can be confused with other benign lesions; however, CT allows a specific diagnosis to be made in virtually all cases. This article reviews the CT appearance and differential diagnoses of lipomas in these rare locations and discusses the rare infiltrating lipoma

Parotid metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is extremely rare. The current case report presents the history of a 41-year old male with the primary symptom of a right parotid gland mass who was diagnosed with NPC by histopathology in 2006 and was staged as having cT(3)N(2)M(0) disease (stage III, American Joint Committee on Cancer staging system, 2002). Histopathological examination of a partial excision of the mass on the right parotid and the neoplasm in the pharynx nasalis revealed poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The patient received radiotherapy and concurrent chemot

PURPOSE: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a safe diagnostic technique that is widely employed for lesions of the head and neck. Among head and neck sites, the parotid gland is unique in the number, diversity, and peculiarity of its pathological processes. This complexity has prompted a great deal of discussion regarding the application of FNA to parotid masses, primarily focusing on the reliability of FNA as a diagnostic tool in guiding patient management.
METHODS: This review presents an analysis of the usefulness of FNA in differential diagnosis of parotid pathologies.
RESULTS: Recent studi

Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant disease and the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Primary carcinoma of the lung was an uncommon cancer until the 1930s. Common cell types in bronchial carcinoma are squamous 35%, Adenocarcinoma 30%, Small-cell 20%, Large-cell 15%. We present a case of a bronchial neoplasm metastasis to the parotid gland. A 50 years old male patient presented with a 7×5cm painless parotid mass that was metastatic adenocarcinoma on histopathology. Then we thoroughly examined the patient and he was investigated accordingly. There was an abnormal shadow in t

Retinoblastoma, the most common primary intraocular malignant neoplasm in young children, show frequent metastasis to lymph nodes, central nervous system and bones. However, retinoblastoma metastasizing to parotid gland is very rare. We here present 2 cases of isolated parotid gland metastasis in two children with unilateral retinoblastoma. Case 1 was a one-year-old child presenting with left globe lesion which was diagnosed as Retinoblastoma. Post chemotherapy, enucleation was done which on histopathology examination showed retinoblastoma with scleral invasion and anterior chamber seeding. On

Lipomas arising from the parotid gland are very rare. We report a 10-year experience in a single institution (La Timone University Hospital of Marseille, France). Among 614 parotidectomies for neoplasms performed from 1998 to 2008, 12 lipomas were identified. A retrospective analysis based on medical records was made. Evaluation, analysis and current management of lipomas of the parotid gland are described. Lipomas accounted for 2% of all parotid neoplasms and 2.6% of benign tumors in our series. The median age of patients was 60 years with a M/F sex ratio of 5-1. The main presentation was a s…

Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare high-grade neoplasm that more frequently affects the parotid gland. Though neoplasms of this type are infrequent in minor salivary glands, they are less aggressive and may lead to early diagnosis before distant metastases could occur. Salivary duct carcinoma is also the most frequent epithelial component of carcinosarcoma. The present article reports a case of SDC of the palate in a 26-year-old male and discusses SDC as a malignant epithelial component in carcinosarcoma.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECas) are malignant epithelial salivary gland neoplasms composed of a variable mixture of epidermoid and mucus-secreting cells arising from the ductal epithelium. Of all salivary gland tumors, MECas are the most common malignant lesions of the parotid gland. This case report aims to present a 14-year-old female patient with a history of progressive enlargement of a 3 cm in diameter, painless, mobile mass located at the parotid gland without facial nerve dysfunction. The lesion was exhaustively studied preoperatively, and studies were carried out. Contrast-enhanced c

Acinic cell carcinoma arising in salivary glands is a rare tumor, accounting for 2% to 5% of the primary neoplasms of the parotid gland. When these tumors are well-differentiated, the neoplasia has innocuous aspect, due to the similarity to normal parotid tissue. This makes the diagnosis difficult. Initially the malignancy of this tumor was uncertain; however, recent studies have declared it as malignant. The female / male ratio is 3:2. The nodule usually presents as solitary and well defined shape. Several authors have used different terms to describe histomorphological patterns of these tumo

Polycystic disease of the parotid glands is a rare disorder, with only eight examples to our knowledge being reported in the literature. The disease presents as a painless enlargement of one or both parotid glands and does not appear to be associated with other disease processes within the head and neck, or with polycystic disease of the kidney, pancreas, or congenital fibrosis of the liver. The histology has been well described. The overall glandular architecture is preserved but the lobules are markedly distended by cysts whose lining appears to be intercalated duct in differentiation. Fibrous Solitary Tumors are infrequent neoplasms originating from mesenchymal tissues, most commonly arising from the visceral pleura and frequently exhibiting a benign behavior. Extra-pleural localization is unusual and the site of origin of these tumors from the parenchyma of the parotid gland is considered extremely rare. We report the case of a 66-years old woman with non-painful slow-growing left latero-cervical mass, who underwent a gadolinium-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging showing a mass originating from the deep lobe of the parotid gland extending into the retro-pharyngeal space.

Accessory parotid gland (APG) is seen in around 21%-56% of individuals. Tumors of accessory parotid are uncommon with an incidence rate of 1%-8% of all parotid tumors. Ductal carcinoma of APG is rare, so no reported incidence was seen in the literature. However, salivary gland ductal carcinoma is reported to be 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. We report here a case of salivary duct carcinoma of APG. Clinical presentation, investigation, and management are discussed. A 69-year-old female presented with a history of the left cheek progressive swelling of 6 years' duration. Computed tomography

Most salivary gland tumors are benign, malignant lesions accounting for 15-30% of the total. The most frequent site of salivary gland neoplasms is the parotid gland (80% of all cases). We present a case of malignant fibrohistiocytoma with atypical features due to its location (in the parotid region), size and rapid growth. Generally, this type of tumor arises in the lower limbs and in the abdomen. When located in the parotid gland, these lesions appear as a firm, slow growing and painless mass. Due to the low frequency of such lesions and their clinical behavior, the imaging study and fine-nee

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma arising in a mixed tumor, or carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CEPA), is an uncommon primary salivary gland neoplasm. Among the various types of carcinomas that can be seen histologically in a CEPA, myoepithelial carcinoma is one of the rarest forms.
CASE: A 76-year-old woman presented with an incidental parotid/parapharyngeal mass. Computed tomography-guide fine needle aspiration (FNA) showed a biphasic neoplasm with epithelial and stromal components consistent with pleomorphic adenoma (PA). However, in addition, a distinct population of discohesive atypical and pleomor
