Calcified Chondroid Mesenchymal Neoplasm of the Masticator Space: A Case Report.

Calcified chondroid mesenchymal neoplasm (CCMN) is a rare, recently defined tumor characterized by mesenchymal tissue with chondroid features and calcification. It typically harbors an FN1 fusion and shows a predilection for the temporomandibular joint and distal extremities. CCMN is benign and has not been associated with malignant behavior. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with an eight-year history of a progressively enlarging, palpable mass in the left parotid region, associated with ipsilateral hearing loss and facial palsy. Imaging studies, including computed tomography (CT) an…

Actinomycosis of parotid gland after maxillary molar extraction, case report and review of literature.

Although actinomycosis is frequently seen in the cervicofacial region, it is very rare in the parotid gland. Furthermore, it can be confused with salivary gland malignancies in imaging. The most important underlying causes are cervicofacial trauma, tooth extraction history and poor oral hygiene. A 43-year-old male patient was admitted to otorhinolaryngology department with a complaint of progressive swelling on his cheek. The histopathological examination of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy showed acute suppurative polymorphous leukocytes and actinomycese hyphae balls within histiocytes. Th

Neonatal venolymphatic malformation with spontaneous parotid duct rupture: first case report.

Disorders of salivary glands especially the parotid gland very rare among neonates and children other than cytomegaly and parotitis epidermica. Venolymphatic malformations are very rare in children. Such presentation around the parotid region yet to be reported. This case report describes a rare presentation of a neonatal venolymphatic malformation on the parotid duct. A 4-week-old termly delivered male infant referred to by a general practitioner bruising over the left buccal area for 1 day from non-consanguine healthy parents. On examination a bluish discoloration in the buccal mucosa over a…

First bite syndrome as presenting symptom of parapharyngeal adenoid cystic carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: First bite syndrome refers to the development of pain in the parotid region after the first bite of each meal. CASE REPORT: A man was referred to our institution with first bite syndrome as his only symptom. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head and neck revealed a deep lobe parotid mass in close contact with the external carotid artery. Computed tomography guided fine needle biopsy indicated adenoid cystic carcinoma. Total parotidectomy was performed, with en bloc resection of the infiltrated external carotid artery and a selective neck dissection of levels Ib to III. High-wei…

Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in a North African woman.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is a rare neoplasm that is characterized by a non-neoplastic lymphocytic infiltration associated with an epithelial proliferation. It involves mainly the parotid gland. Racial and geographical factors contribute to the pathogenesis of this tumor. We report a case of a 70-year old woman from a non-endemic area who presented with several months history of swelling in the parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a parotid mass suggestive of a pleomorphic adenoma. The diagnosis of lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland was perform…

Polymorphous Adenocarcinoma of the Parotid Gland: A Rare Entity in Asians With a Unique Cystic Presentation.

Polymorphous adenocarcinoma (PAC) of the parotid is a rare entity with minimal reported incidences in the Asian population. It generally presents as a solid tumor and is considered a diagnostic dilemma due to morphological diversity and variable histological patterns. This article reports a unique fluid-filled PAC of the parotid gland mimicking a cystic lesion in an Indian male, with a review of relevant literature. A 64-year-old male patient presented with a slow-growing swelling of the left parotid region for the last 10 years. The cytology report suggested a cystic swelling. The patient und…

A New Primary in Parotid Gland with History of Treated Mediastinal Solitary Fibrous Tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare tumours in the head and neck region. They have been reported in many anatomic sites but occurrence in the parotid gland is exceptional. We report a very rare finding of a benign SFT of the parotid gland in a patient with a past history of excision of a malignant type of mediastinal tumour. It is important that clinicians are aware of the possible existence of SFT in the parotid as a synchronous lesion or occurrence of the same disease later on elsewhere when SFT is diagnosed at one anatomical site. This case report illustrates that regular clinical and

Resection of accessory parotid gland tumors through a peroral approach with facial nerve monitoring.

Accessory parotid glands are an anatomic variation. Pathologic alterations, which occur in these tissues, are related to those found in the parotid gland. At this time, first-line therapy consists of total resection. In consideration of the delicate anatomy in this region, a careful approach through a lateral parotidectomy or a facelift incision is recommended. In this report, we give an account of a minimally invasive surgical alternative through a peroral approach with facial nerve monitoring. The histologically secured pleomorphic adenoma was completely removed. During surgery, a branch of

An epidermal cyst in the parotid gland following ear surgery: a case report.

PROBLEM/OBJECTIVE: Iatrogenic epidermal cysts have been reported in various locations following otological surgical procedures. Especially after endaural incisions, surgeons may implant squamous epithelium into underlying tissue. An epidermal cyst of the parotid region may appear years after ipsilateral ear surgery. METHODOLOGY: A cystic lesion in the superficial lobe of the parotid gland was identified by computed tomography and ultrasonography in a 30-year-old man with a history of myringoplasty and endaural surgery. A superficial parotidectomy was performed to remove the mass. RESULTS: Th…

[Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the parotid gland].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine carcinomas are rarely observed in the parotid gland. CASE REPORT: A 65-year-old woman with an uneventful history was hospitalised for a tumor in the left parotid gland which had progressed for 8 months. The clinical manifestations and the radiological findings were in favour of a malignant process involving the parotid gland. Search for local and regional extension was considered to be negative. The surgical procedure was very difficult but enabled conservative resection of the tumor by total parotidectomy. Pathology results were in favour of a neuroendocrine carc

An Unusual Case of an Extra-salivary Subcutaneous Multifocal Pleomorphic Salivary Adenoma.

A 36-year-old woman was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, with multiple subcutaneous swellings on the right side of the face, overlying the parotid region and extending below the mandibular border. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed several macrocystic subcutaneous lesions, and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration confirmed a diagnosis of pleomorphic salivary adenoma (PSA). The lesions were excised via a modified Blair incision and were found to be superficial to the parotid capsule. Histopathological evaluation showed myxoid-…

The importance of the head and neck region in regression of advanced MCC: a clinical report.

This paper presents the case of a 76-year-old woman who experienced a total regression of a Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). The primary site of the tumor was on her right eyebrow. After this lesion was excised, the patient presented a massive locoregional metastasis on the right parotid gland and the laterocervical lymph nodes. No distant metastases were detected. An incisional biopsy into the right parotid gland confirmed the diagnosis of MCC metastasis. No surgical treatment was prescribed because of the advanced stage of the disease. Spontaneous total regression on the parotid and the neck mas

Bilateral cystic parotid masses and a hypopharyngeal mass: a case report and review of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma in the head and neck.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a low-grade B-cell lymphoma that was first described in gastric mucosa. Although presentation in the parotid gland is not unusual, bilateral cystic masses and associated hypopharyngeal involvement are rare. We describe an 83-year-old man with a large painless facial swelling; he was otherwise asymptomatic. On examination, bilateral parotid masses and a mass in the hypopharynx were found. Biopsy of the hypopharynx was consistent with MALT lymphoma. The patient was treated with single-agent chemotherapy and had a good initial response. MALT ly

[Computed tomography and diagnosis of salivary gland diseases].

A study was carried out to compare routine sialography and combination sialo-CT. The results in 36 patients with afflictions of the parotid and submandibular region are discussed. In addition to tumors, regarded as primary indications, inflammatory disorders were also considered. The diagnosis made by routine sialography is regularly confirmed by computed sialography (CTS), which is often an important complementary means. Visualization of the deep parotid lobe and parapharyngeal space (third plane) is very important for making the diagnosis and planning therapy.

Synchronous bilateral multifocal basal cell adenomas of the parotid gland-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral parotid gland tumors account for up to 3% of cases. In this group, the vast majority are Warthin's tumors. However, bilateral presentations of other parotid gland tumor entities is also possible, an example of which is a basal cell adenoma (BCA). Bilateral BCA is extremely rare, which could cause misdiagnosing it as a Warthin tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: The current study reports the unique case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with a 6-month history of slowly growing masses located bilaterally in the parotid region, surgically treated with 5-year follow-up (no recurren…

Short- and long-term functional vs morphometrical salivary effects of irradiation in a rodent model.

BACKGROUND: Irradiation-induced salivary damage which results in severe xerostomia is a well known entity. However, the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon is still considered enigmatic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used one of the most studied models, male Wistar rats, and irradiated them to the head and neck region with both a low dose [2.5 Gy] and a high dose [15 Gy] of irradiation. Then we evaluated salivary gland function, weight and morphology of both parotid and submandibular glands in the same animals. Examinations were obtained for the short-term [3 days], long-term [40 days] and ex

Primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the parotid gland: a case report.

Most malignant lymphomas of the head and neck region are non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common subtype. The prevalence of malignant lymphoma among parotid tumors is low, approximately 1% to 4%. The most common symptom of parotid lymphoma is a unilateral, non-tender, firm mass that slowly grows in size over time. As its clinical manifestations are non-specific, a comprehensive assessment is required for an accurate diagnosis. The initial work-up includes imaging tools, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. However, NHL of the par
