Large-scale mirror-symmetry organization of human occipito-temporal object areas.

We have combined functional maps of retinotopy (eccentricity and meridian mapping), object category, and motion in a group of subjects to explore the large-scale topography of higher-order object areas. Our results reveal seven consistent category-related entities situated in the occipito-temporal cortex adjoining early visual areas. These include two face-related regions, three object-related regions, and two building-related regions. Interestingly, this complex category-related pattern is organized in a large-scale dorso-ventral mirror symmetry of object category. Furthermore, correlating th

Why are pictures remembered better than sounds? The roles of subjective vividness of mental imagery and semantic labels.

Pictures are recognized more accurately than environmental sounds, possibly because pictures provide enhanced conceptual and perceptual representations than sounds. Conceptual-perceptual distinctiveness (CPD) theory proposes that pictures benefit from stronger semantic organization and more diagnostic perceptual detail. It remains unclear whether the picture superiority effect reflects differences in the subjective vividness of retrieved memories and whether increasing category-level semantic support can enhance vividness for environmental sounds, thereby reducing picture superiority in recogn

Person identity-specific adaptation effects in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

Identifying the faces of familiar persons requires the ability to assign several different images of a face to a common identity. Previous research showed that the occipito-temporal cortex, including the fusiform and the occipital face areas, is sensitive to personal identity. Still, the viewpoint, facial expression and image-independence of this information are currently under heavy debate. Here we adapted a rapid serial visual stimulation paradigm Johnston et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cortex.2016.10.002) and presented highly variable ambient-face images of famous persons to measur

Word and text processing in developmental prosopagnosia.

The "many-to-many" hypothesis proposes that visual object processing is supported by distributed circuits that overlap for different object categories. For faces and words the hypothesis posits that both posterior fusiform regions contribute to both face and visual word perception and predicts that unilateral lesions impairing one will affect the other. However, studies testing this hypothesis have produced mixed results. We evaluated visual word processing in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia, a condition linked to right posterior fusiform abnormalities. Ten developmental prosopagnosi

Overcoming the effect of letter confusability in letter-by-letter reading: a rehabilitation study.

Patients who read in a letter-by-letter manner can demonstrate effects of lexical variables when reading words comprised of low confusability letters, suggesting the capacity to process low-confusability words in parallel across the letters (Fiset, Arguin, & McCabe, 2006). Here a series of experiments is presented investigating letter confusability effects in MAH, a patient with expressive and receptive aphasia who shows reduced reading accuracy with longer words, and DM, a relatively "pure" alexic patient. Two rehabilitation studies were employed: (i) a word-level therapy and (ii) a letter-le

Neural substrates for functionally discriminating self-face from personally familiar faces.

Understanding the neurobiological substrates of self-recognition yields important insight into socially and clinically critical cognitive functions such as theory of mind. Experimental evidence suggests that right frontal and parietal lobes preferentially process self-referent information. Recognition of one's own face is an important parameter of self-recognition, but well-controlled experimental data on the brain substrates of self-face recognition is limited. The goal of this study was to characterize the activation specific to self-face in comparison with control conditions of two levels o

Impaired visual processing of letter and digit strings in adult dyslexic readers.

The slow word reading of developmental dyslexics may stem from a string processing impairment which in turn reflects visual attentional deficits. We indeed found substantially enhanced recognition time thresholds in the dyslexic adult readers. However, their position profiles were hard to reconcile with any of the discussed visual attentional deficit hypotheses and with the prediction that dyslexic readers suffer from an absent string processing system as they exhibited similar M-shaped position profiles for digit and letter strings as the normal reading controls.

Face memory is shaped more by fixation durations and sequences than by where observers fixate within the face.

Studies suggest that fixating on the eyes is critical for face learning and memory but whether this differs with task demands or eye region definition is unclear. We investigated how viewing patterns during face encoding and recognition are shaped by eye region definitions, task demands, and the sequence of fixations. Using an old/new paradigm, participants (N = 108) viewed faces during both encoding and recognition phases under incidental and intentional learning tasks. Recognition accuracy did not differ between the two tasks. During encoding, longer fixation duration predicted lower odds of

The influence of spatial frequencies, orientation, and familiarity on face stimuli integration.

When we observe an object, our visual system extracts both coarse and fine information to build a coherent percept. This process is often described as a coarse-to-fine integration, in which low spatial frequency (LSF) information provides an initial scaffold for interpreting high spatial frequency (HSF) detail. Here, we examined how this integration unfolds in face perception across two experiments. We leveraged the face inversion effect-where inverted faces are harder to recognize than upright ones-as a tool to probe processing flexibility. In Experiment 1, ten participants matched two famili

A familiar face and person processing area in the human temporal pole.

How does the brain process the faces of familiar people? Neuropsychological studies have argued for an area of the temporal pole (TP) linking faces with person identities, but magnetic susceptibility artifacts in this region have hampered its study with fMRI. Using data acquisition and analysis methods optimized to overcome this artifact, we identify a familiar face response in TP, reliably observed in individual brains. This area responds strongly to visual images of familiar faces over unfamiliar faces, objects, and scenes. However, TP did not just respond to images of faces, but also to a v

Depth in convolutional neural networks solves scene segmentation.

Feed-forward deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) are, under specific conditions, matching and even surpassing human performance in object recognition in natural scenes. This performance suggests that the analysis of a loose collection of image features could support the recognition of natural object categories, without dedicated systems to solve specific visual subtasks. Research in humans however suggests that while feedforward activity may suffice for sparse scenes with isolated objects, additional visual operations ('routines') that aid the recognition process (e.g. segmentation or g

Face processing in different brain areas, and critical band masking.

Neurophysiological evidence is described showing that some neurons in the macaque inferior temporal visual cortex have responses that are invariant with respect to the position, size, view, and spatial frequency of faces and objects, and that these neurons show rapid processing and rapid learning. Critical band spatial frequency masking is shown to be a property of these face-selective neurons and of the human visual perception of faces. Which face or object is present is encoded using a distributed representation in which each neuron conveys independent information in its firing rate, with li

Identification of letters distorted by physiologically-inspired spatial scrambling.

In the geniculostriate pathway of the human visual system, neuronal projections carry signals from a particular retinal locus in parallel from one anatomical area to the next. Imprecision in the fidelity of these projections would place constraints on the ability of the system to perform tasks requiring positional information. We investigated the impact that "spatial scrambling" between stages would have on visual performance. We consider two stages in a simple canonical model of the early visual cortex where scrambling might occur: either the input to the first orientation-tuned mechanisms (a

Cortical regions involved in visual texture perception: a fMRI study.

To determine visual areas of the human brain involved in elementary form processing, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure regional responses to two types of achromatic textures. Healthy young adults were presented with 'random' textures which lacked spatial organization of the black and white pixels that make up the image, and 'correlated' textures in which the pixels were ordered to produce extended contours and rectangular blocks at multiple spatial scales. Relative to a fixation condition, random texture stimulation resulted in increased signal intensity primaril

Visual perceptual differences in the dyslexic reader: evidence of greater visual peripheral sensitivity to color and letter stimuli.

The present study replicated the 1987 work of Geiger and Lettvin and of Grosser and Spafford in 1989 in providing evidence for greater peripheral sensitivity to individual letter and color stimuli for 10 dyslexics as compared to 10 normal readers. Earlier studies have demonstrated that dyslexics tend to favor clearer images in the peripheral retina as compared to the foveal advantage of proficient readers. For letter and color stimuli individually presented there was a statistically significant difference between dyslexics and proficient readers based on the ability of dyslexics to recognize b

Electroretinograms evoked in man by local uniform or patterned stimulation.

1. We have recorded electroretinograms (e.r.g.s) in normal subjects. Television monitors were used as stimulators. The screens were surrounded by brightly lit white reflecting surfaces to ensure that the responses were developed by defined retinal areas.2. Various types of stimuli were employed. Either (i) a pattern of dark and bright squares was reversed, to evoke a pattern e.r.g. (p.e.r.g.), (ii) the luminance of the uniform screen was abruptly increased and decreased to evoke a focal on-off e.r.g. or (iii) a pattern was made to appear and disappear from a uniform background. Toddlers' Active Gaze Behavior Supports Self-Supervised Object Learning.

Toddlers learn to recognize objects from different viewpoints with almost no supervision. During this learning, they execute frequent eye and head movements that shape their visual experience. It is presently unclear if and how these behaviors contribute to toddlers' emerging object recognition abilities. To answer this question, we here combine head-mounted eye tracking during dyadic play with unsupervised machine learning. We approximate toddlers' central visual field experience by cropping image regions from a head-mounted camera centered on the current gaze location estimated via eye track

Interocular transfer of visual memory - Influence of visual impairment and abnormalities of the optic chiasm.

Due to an increased crossing of the optic nerve fibers at the optic chiasm in albinism, the visual cortex receives largely monocular input from the contralateral eye. Here we investigated whether this obstruction of binocular integration at the cortical input stage also impacts on interocular information exchange at the high processing level of visual memory. Interocular transfer (IOT) of visual memory retrieval was tested psychophysically after monocular encoding in 8 albinotic participants and 24 healthy controls. The retrieval performance (hit rate, reaction time, d') was determined when us

Pattern-pulses and pattern-reversals evoke different cascades of cortical sources in the multifocal visual evoked potential.

The multifocal visual evoked potential (mVEP), elicited by either pattern-pulses or pattern-reversals, provides an effective means to study visual processing and to identify retinal damage and visual field defects. It is often assumed that the first components of these VEPs, the C1 and N75, respectively, are generated in V1, based on source modeling and their polarity reversal between upper- and lower-field stimulus presentations. However, limitations in the spatial resolution of source modeling and the non-uniqueness of the polarity reversal heuristic leave this assumed V1 source uncertain. W
