Depressed adolescents' exposure to suicide attempts and suicide loss.

This study explored depressed adolescent inpatients' (N = 158) experiences of exposure to friends' and family members' suicidal behaviors. Most of the participants (n = 102, 64.6%) reported exposure to suicide-related behavior. Teens exposed to suicide were more likely than non-exposed peers to report experiencing physical abuse, sexual abuse, and suicide attempts. No differences were observed between those exposed to only suicide attempts and those exposed to both suicide attempts and deaths in clinical characteristics or suicidal behaviors. Exposure to any form of suicide-related behavior ma

The Impact of a Peer Social Support Network from the Perspective of Women with Fibromyalgia: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is a chronic and complex disease whose management by patients requires a high level of commitment. Patient empowerment therefore represents an important milestone in chronic disease treatment and control. We explored the impact of a peer social support network from the perspective of women with fibromyalgia. METHODS: A generic qualitative design was proposed for the study, for which women who had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia were purposefully selected. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted, and the collected data were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Three

The growth of gossip: Socialization of relational aggression from adolescence to emerging adulthood.

The extant literature suggests that relational aggression appears in early childhood, and gradually increases throughout adolescence. However, very little research has examined the growth of relational aggression from adolescence to emerging adulthood. In addition, research generally examines socializing factors of relational aggression, such as parenting, peers, siblings, or media in isolation. Accordingly, the aim of the current study was to examine these socializing factors conjunctively as predictors of the growth of relational aggression over time. Participants consisted of 500 adolescent

Improving oral reading fluency with a peer-mediated intervention.

This study examined the effects of an experimentally derived, peer-delivered reading intervention on the oral reading fluency of a first-grade student who had been referred for poor reading fluency. Same-grade peers were trained to lead the target student through a structured intervention protocol based on the results of a brief experimental analysis. Results indicated that reading improvements were obtained and are discussed in terms of selecting efficient interventions for use by peers.

Predicting doctor performance outcomes of curriculum interventions: problem-based learning and continuing competence.

CONTEXT: Problem-based learning (PBL) is an educational strategy designed to enhance self-assessment, self-directed learning and lifelong learning. The present study examines a peer review programme to determine whether the impact of PBL on continuing competence can be detected in practice. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to establish whether McMaster graduates who graduated between 1972 and 1991 were any less likely to be identified as having issues of competence by a systematic peer review programme than graduates of other Ontario medical schools. METHODS: We identified a total of 1166 doctor

Inclusion at a university: experiences of a young woman with Down syndrome.

For young adults with developmental disabilities, postsecondary experiences on a university campus with same-age peers can provide opportunities for learning and social integration. Through the collaborative support of university instructors, a preservice teacher, and her mother, a young woman with Down syndrome was successfully included in a speech communications course at a 4-year, private university. Our purpose here was to explore the impact of this experience on the student, her classmates, and preservice teacher who offered peer support. The experience provided opportunities for interact

Brief alcohol interventions with mandated or adjudicated college students.

This article summarizes the proceedings of a symposium presented at the 2003 RSA Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, organized and chaired by Nancy Barnett. The purpose of the symposium was to present information and efficacy data about approaches to brief intervention with students who get into trouble on their campuses for alcohol and as a result are required to attend alcohol education or counseling. Presentations were (1) Differences Between Mandated College Students and Their Peers on Alcohol Use and Readiness to Change, by Tracy O'Leary Tevyaw; (2) An Effective Alcohol Prevention Program

A comparison of students with learning disabilities to low achieving and higher achieving students on three dimensions of social competence.

Research continues to accumulate attesting to the fact that many children with learning disabilities are experiencing social difficulties in school. Nonetheless, it is also clear that achievement deficits, with or without the presence of a handicapping condition, are also related to social problems in the classroom. Several studies attempting to clarify the relative roles of handicapping condition and achievement in social adjustment have produced mixed results. The purpose of the present study was to clarify this issue further by examining the social differences between elementary school stud

A review of blood donor motivation and recruitment.

Sixty English-language articles on the motivation and recruitment of blood donors and nondonors are reviewed and evaluated. Apparently researchers have been finding essentially the same results for approximately twenty years. Motivations to donate are: altruism/humanitarian, personal or family credit, social pressure, replacement and reward. Motivations not to donate are: fear (of needle, sight of blood, weakness, finger or ear pricking), medical excuses, reactions, apathy, and inconvenience. Deeper analysis of motivation suggests that donors may unconsciously desire a "pat-on-the-back" for th

Influence of perceived peer behavior on engagement in self-damaging behaviors during the transition to university.

As students transition to university, they experience significant social changes that can affect their behaviors, including self-damaging behaviors like disordered eating, problematic alcohol/drug use, suicidal thoughts, and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Building on prior work, we examined the associations between (1) perceptions of peers' engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting one's own subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e., socialization) and (2) one's own engagement in self-damaging behaviors predicting perceptions of peers' subsequent engagement in such behaviors (i.e.

From peers to partners: The peer-context origins of adolescent heterosexual romance.

Romantic partnerships are highly influential for adolescent development, but many questions remain as to how and with whom such relationships emerge. By adopting a dynamic social network perspective, this study furthers our understanding of the peer-related precursors to heterosexual adolescent romance. Multivariate statistical network models are applied to unique longitudinal data on 1919 Dutch adolescents' (Mage = 14.9, SDage = 1.6; 52% girls, 12% non-Western migration background) romantic relationships and other social ties (e.g., friendships, popularity nominations, "crushes"). Results ind

Online Peer Support for Gambling Harm: Perspectives from People with Lived Experience and Service Providers.

Online peer support (mutual aid provided by individuals with lived experience through digital platforms such as forums, messaging groups, or video meetings) has demonstrated benefits across health contexts but remains underexplored in gambling harm recovery. This study explored how online peer support for gambling harm is used and experienced, including perceived benefits, risks, and its role within broader support pathways, from the perspectives of (i) individuals with lived experience and (ii) professionals providing gambling harm support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 pa

A narrative review of qualitative studies exploring the normalization of gambling for youth and younger adults.

Gambling is a highly visible and socially embedded activity among young people, with marketing, social practices, and digital platforms shaping perceptions and behaviours. This article presents a narrative review of qualitative studies (2015-25) exploring how gambling is normalized among youth and younger adults (up to 35 years), and how they perceive and respond to these processes. Four themes were constructed from n = 22 articles using a reflexive approach to thematic analysis. First, gambling was socially constructed as a normative activity through early family exposure and peer group pract…

Link workers' perspectives on factors enabling and preventing client engagement with social prescribing.

For a social prescribing intervention to achieve its aims, clients must first be effectively engaged. A 'link worker' facilitating linkage between clients and community resources has been identified as a vital component of social prescribing. However, the mechanisms underpinning successful linkage remain underspecified. This qualitative study is the first to explore link workers' own definitions of their role in social prescribing and the skills and qualities identified by link workers themselves as necessary for effective client linkage. This study also explores 'threats' to successful linked

When Generosity Backfires: Children's Evaluation of Sharing With Negative Social Consequences.

Generosity is widely regarded as one of the most praiseworthy virtues. However, when individuals engage in generous acts, such behavior can sometimes lead to unintended consequences, such as overshadowing the reputations of others. Across two studies (N = 512), we examined how 8- to 12-year-old children and adults evaluate generous sharing when it undermines a peer's reputation, and whether this evaluation is moderated by the social relationship between the individuals involved. Participants were presented with a vignette in which an actor shared more than a peer-who was either a friend or a s
