Influential accounts interpret anorexia as arising from perfectionism, dichotomous thinking, and poor control expressed in a variety of life domains, resulting in low self-esteem. In this context, restraining eating would allow patients to re-establish some control and self-esteem. Although this view has offered important insight, one shortcoming is that constructs such as perfectionism, control, and dichotomous thinking, remain poorly specified. To clarify these constructs, we propose a computational model of anorexia. This relies on previous theories of evaluation, which highlight its refere

Deficits in set-shifting abilities have been robustly described in adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). These deficits are associated with behavioral traits, such as rigidity and perfectionism, and are independent of starvation. However, little is known about neurocognitive deficits in juvenile patients with AN. The brain circuits that support set shifting are not fully mature in these patients. One possibility is that neuroendocrinological changes, such as elevated cortisol levels, contributing to alterations in cognitive performance in individuals with AN. Set-shifting abilities (Visua

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the corresponding lockdown have drastically changed our lives and led to high psychological distress and mental health problems. This study examined whether psychological factors such as loneliness, perfectionism, and health anxiety are associated with COVID-19 related anxiety and depression during the pandemic in young Korean adults, after controlling for various socio-demographic factors and early life stress.
METHODS: A total of 189 participants (58.2% women) completed a cross-sectional online survey including the Fear of COV

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate correlates of a compensatory eating disorder (CED) characterized by recurrent nonpurging compensatory behaviors in the absence of objectively large binge episodes among normal weight individuals who endorse undue influence of weight/shape on self-evaluation as possible indicators of clinical significance and distinctiveness.
METHOD: Women with CED (n = 20), women with bulimia nervosa (BN) (n = 20), and controls (n = 20) completed an interview and questionnaires assessing eating disorder and general psychopathology and weight history.
RESULTS: Compared with controls, wo

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on parental educational level (PEL) as a risk factor for Eating Disorders (EDs) is mixed, and no study has assessed its role in relation to the compliance and outcomes of treatments in EDs. Further, no study differentiated from the educational level of mothers and fathers, nor considered the possible mediation of perfectionism in fostering EDs.
METHODS: A clinical sample of 242 first-ever admitted inpatients with EDs provided information on PEL and completed the following questionnaires: the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) and the Frost Multidimensiona

BACKGROUND: As COVID-19 restrictions ease, the public are expected to relinquish previously enforced safety behaviors and resume a more normal lifestyle. Despite these aims, our recent survey of 438 adults from the general population, during a temporary release of lockdown in the United Kingdom (July-November 2020), showed that 25% of the public find re-adjustment problematic. This was especially the case in those with a history of mental disorder and obsessive-compulsive (OC) traits and symptoms, including rigidity as measured by a neurocognitive test of attentional flexibility. To aid in ide

BACKGROUND/AIM: The widespread symptoms of anorexia netvosa (AN) in young women require to draw professional attention to this problem in Serbia. In previous research on AN, insecure attachment styles, perfectionism and concerns about body shape were identified as notable risk factors. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of AN among female students and assess the importance of these factors in its development.
METHODS: The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR), the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and the Body Shap

Although frequently used in the United States, the Ruminative Response Scale (RRS) has not been extensively studied in cross-cultural samples. The present study evaluated the factor structure of Treynor et al.'s 10-item version of the RRS in samples from Argentina (N = 308) and the United States (N = 371). In addition to testing measurement invariance between the countries, we evaluated whether the maladaptive implications of rumination were weaker for the Argentinians than for the U.S. group. Self-critical perfectionism was the criterion in those tests. Partial scalar invariance supported an

Cognitive-behavioral conceptualizations of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) have predominantly viewed compulsions as being motivated by harm avoidance. However, sensations of things being incomplete or not "just right" may also underlie compulsions in OCD. Preliminary research suggests that distinguishing between harm avoidance and incompleteness in OCD may have practical utility, but the research on this topic is very limited to date. The current study further addressed the role of incompleteness in OCD. A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for harm avoidance and incompleteness

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between childhood dance participation and adult eating behavior and psychological health.
METHODS: A total of 546 undergraduate females at a large Midwestern university completed questionnaires regarding eating behavior and associated features, depression, self-esteem, and body image.
RESULTS: Women who participated in childhood dance are more likely to score higher on measures of bulimic behaviors than nondancers. In addition, childhood dancers indicated greater drive for thinness and poorer impulse control compared to nondancers. Furthermore, there wa

It is surprising to note the evolution of success rates in Belgian universities especially in the first Year. Men are less successful than women and the differences are escalating in an alarming way. Dropouts take the same direction and women now represent a majority of the students at the university. In a previous study, we assessed 616 students in the first Year at the university of Liège with Vasev, the English name of which was TASTE, a self report questionnaire constituted of 4 factors: anxiety, self confidence, procrastination and performance value; anxiety particularly concerned somatic

Kernberg and McWilliams have spawned differing conceptualizations of the relationship between depressive and masochistic (self-defeating) personalities. Kernberg describes these personality styles as largely overlapping in features, whereas McWilliams accentuates important clinical differences that make up two distinct personalities. In this article, their theoretical perspectives are discussed and framed as more complementary than competitive. The malignant self-regard (MSR) construct is introduced and reviewed as an integrative self-representation that is shared by both depressive and masoch

In this case study we present the course of the psychotherapy of Myriam, a 19-year old female with a severe personality disorder and comorbid eating disorder. During the initial assessment she reported high levels of neuroticism that parallel the diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and anorexia nervosa. Myriam showed a severely impaired personality functioning defined by perfectionism, self-criticism, interpersonal guilt and overcontrol. Her daily experience was shaped by a self-recriminative inner dialogue associated with maladaptive patter

Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) is a common comorbidity in children with Tourette syndrome (TS). However, motor restlessness and high levels of sensorimotor activation or "overactivity" may be a feature of TS rather than a distinct ADHD comorbidity. The link between overactivity and ADHD in TS has yet to be established and in particular between adult and preadolescent manifestations. The current study furthers this understanding of ADHD features in TS by investigating the relationship between cognitive and behavioral aspects of ADHD and TS. The style of planning (STOP) ove

Personality pathology (PP) is a risk factor for poor parenting. However, little is known about how dimensions of PP differentially relate to parenting behaviors. To address this gap, we examined associations between dimensions of pathological personality traits in (N = 302) pregnant women, oversampled for intimate partner violence, and their observed parenting behavior at 6 months postpartum. First, we validated a six-factor structure of PP trait dimensions consisting of negative affectivity, detachment, disinhibition, antagonism, psychoticism, and anankastia. Second, we examined associations

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is characterized by pervasive and persistent traits including preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control. Relatively little is known about the potential relationship between OCPD traits and physical health.
METHODS: We investigated the association between OCPD traits and several self-reported medical conditions in 249 individuals followed prospectively from 1981 until 2004/2005 as part of the Epidemiological Catchment Area.
RESULTS: The OCPD trait score was inversely related to hypertension in males, in models unadj

OBJECTIVE: The current study described the clinical presentation of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) in Japan utilizing the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI-2) and assessed whether the clinical profile of eating disorder cases in Japan differs significantly from North American data.
METHOD: Statistical comparisons of Japanese AN, BN, and non-eating-disordered (NonED) EDI-2 data were conducted across diagnostic groups and with the North American standardization sample.
RESULTS: The Japanese diagnostic groups reported significant between-group differences on all eight EDI-2 subs

Beck, Epstein, Harrison and Emery (unpublished manuscript, 1983) developed the Sociotropy-Autonomy Scale (SAS) to assess personality constructs that were considered possible vulnerability factors to reactive depression. Principal components and factor analyses of an expanded 93-item version of the SAS were performed with successive samples of undergraduates totalling 2041 Ss. Only 59 items were needed to establish the generalizabilities of one dimension of Sociotropy and two dimensions of Autonomy. Three subscales reflecting Sociotropy, Solitude and Independence were constructed from these ite

The following article describes the reasons given by 15 anorexic patients for their illness. The patients were asked the following question in an open-ended interview-'What would you say were the causes of your illness?' In reply detailed complex narratives were gathered from which a number of themes could be identified. These included unhappiness, control, being in a downward spiral, obsession and perfectionism. Most patients, for example explained that they were unhappy. To address their unhappiness, they adopted a strategy of control over food. Being able to exert this control gave patients

Although current cognitive-behavioral models suggest that maladaptive "obsessive beliefs" about threat, responsibility, uncertainty, perfectionism, importance, and control of thoughts contributes to the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), the structure of such beliefs is unclear. The current study evaluated a bifactor model of obsessive beliefs, as assessed by the Obsessive Beliefs Questionnaire (OBQ-44), and its association with OCD symptoms in clinical (Study 1; N = 264) and nonclinical (Study 2; N = 437) samples. The goals were as follows: (a) to evaluate whether obsessive b
