[Clinical significance of diplopia in HIV infection. Assessment of a personal caseload and review of the literature].

Diplopia is one of the neuro-ophthalmic manifestations that can be observed during HIV-infection. The etiologic agents of diplopia in HIV-positive patients can be identified with HIV itself or opportunistic pathogens or other related conditions. We reviewed the clinical records of 13 HIV-positive patients with mono or bilateral diplopia, focusing on etiologic agents, clinical evaluation and prognosis. This review encompassed all cases observed from January 1992 to June 1995 at the Infectious Diseases Department, Policlinico S. Matteo, University of Pavia. All patients underwent a complete opht

Assessment of "los pequeños" Big Five: The Spanish version of the Big Five Personality Trait Short Questionnaire in adolescents.

The major advantage of the Big Five Personality Trait Short Questionnaire (BFPTSQ) over other noncommercial Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality scales is that it targets both adolescents and adults. The aim of the present study was to explore the psychometric properties of this questionnaire in a Spanish, adolescent sample. The main sample was composed of 1,082 participants (Mage = 14.16, SD = 1.56, age range = 12-17 years), 53% girls. The results showed that the expected factor structure was mostly recovered using exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM). The ESEM presented satisfactor

The Japanese version of the Material Values Scale: construct assessment and relationship with age, personality, and subjective well-being.

BACKGROUND: Materialism indicates the extent to which an individual's life is focused on consumerism, or the acquisition of money and possessions. The Material Values Scale (MVS), comprising the factors "success," "centrality," and "happiness," is a well-known rating scale for materialism. However, a Japanese version of the materialism scale has not yet been established, and the details of the factors and effects related to materialism have not yet been clarified in Japan. The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the Japanese version of the MVS (J-MVS). METHODS: We developed the t

Mapping Chinese Personality: An Assessment of the Psychometric Properties of the NEO-PI-3 in Monolingual and Bilingual Studies.

The NEO-PI-3 is a fourth-generation instrument that has been shown to improve the psychometrics and readability of its immediate precedent, the NEO-PI-R. We examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese versions of the NEO-PI-R and NEO-PI-3 using three datasets (Ns = 913, 299, 403) collected using both monolingual and bilingual designs. The Chinese NEO-PI-3 scales displayed a five-factor structure in which the facets had the highest loadings on their intended factors. The structure demonstrated strong invariance across both languages (English vs. Chinese) and gender groups, maintained hi

Comparing English-Language and Chinese-Language Assessment of DSM-5 Personality Disorders and Interpersonal Problems in Chinese Bilingual Speakers.

A review of the literature on Chinese translations of Western self-report personality disorder assessment measures indicates the need to empirically evaluate the validity of assessing Western personality disorder constructs in Chinese language and culture. The current study presents a novel approach to examining this critical question in cross-cultural clinical assessment science and practice. One hundred and ninety-nine (199) Mandarin Chinese and English bilingual participants (92 males and 107 females) provided both English and Chinese self-report ratings on the Inventory of Interpersonal Pr

Personality, coping, risky behavior, and mental disorders in the offspring of parents with bipolar disorder: a comprehensive psychosocial assessment.

OBJECTIVES: It has been proposed that the offspring of parents with bipolar disorder (OBD), through genetic mechanisms and early family interactions, develop a heightened sensitivity to stress, maladaptive coping, and dysregulated behavior, which ultimately increases the risk for affective disorders. The current study tested certain predictions of this model by assessing different psychosocial and health-related outcomes in the OBD, including personality, coping style, smoking, suicidality, high-risk sexual behaviors, criminality, and mental health. METHOD: The sample was composed of 74 OBD a

Dimensional assessment of self- and interpersonal functioning in adolescents: implications for DSM-5's general definition of personality disorder.

Central to the proposed DSM-5 general definition of personality disorder (PD) are features of self- and interpersonal functioning. The Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale-Global Rating Method (SCORS-G) is a coding system that assesses eight dimensions of self- and relational experience that can be applied to narrative data or used by clinically experienced observers to quantify observations of patients in ongoing psychotherapy. This study aims to evaluate the relationship of SCORS-G dimensions to personality pathology in adolescents and their incremental validity for predicting multipl

Comparison of Self-Report and Structured Clinical Interview Scores for the Assessment of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale.

This study addresses the need for an examination of the criterion validity of a highly popular self-report instrument which is used to gain a quick first impression of personality dysfunction: the Level of Personality Functioning Scale-Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0). To this end, the relationship between LPFS-BF 2.0 scores and SCID-5-AMPD-I scores rated by trained clinicians was investigated in a clinical Norwegian sample (N = 155). Moreover, we investigated the relationship between the Norwegian version of the LPFS-BF 2.0 and other self-report instruments (the WSAS, GAD-7, and PHQ-9). Correlati

Study Features and Response Compliance in Ecological Momentary Assessment Research in Borderline Personality Disorder: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by frequent and intense moment-to-moment changes in affect, behavior, identity, and interpersonal relationships, which typically result in significant and negative deterioration of the person's overall functioning and well-being. Measuring and characterizing the rapidly changing patterns of instability in BPD dysfunction as they occur in a person's daily life can be challenging. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a method that can capture highly dynamic processes in psychopathology research and, thus, is well suited to st

Assessment of personality disorders in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A comparison of self-report and structured interview methods.

Interest in assessing Personality Disorders (PDs) in association with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) has been accompanied by the development of several structured interview and self-report measures. In an attempt to see how the self-report Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-II) compared with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID-II) in the assessment of PDs, we gave both instruments to 43 inpatients with a diagnosis of AN or BN. Correlation coefficient values for both categorical and dimensional comparisons were generally less than .4. Although comparabl
