Cognitive and neuropsychiatric features of orthostatic tremor: A case-control comparison.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests that the cerebellum could play a role in the pathophysiology of orthostatic tremor. The link between orthostatic tremor and the cerebellum is of interest, especially in light of the role the cerebellum plays in cognition, and it raises the possibility that orthostatic tremor patients could have cognitive deficits consistent with cerebellar dysfunction. Our aim was to examine whether orthostatic tremor patients had cognitive deficits and distinct personality profiles when compared with matched controls. METHODS: Sixteen consecutive orthostatic tremor patients (6

Childhood maltreatment, maladaptive personality types and level and course of psychological distress: A six-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment and maladaptive personality are both cross-sectionally associated with psychological distress. It is unknown whether childhood maltreatment affects the level and longitudinal course of psychological distress in adults and to what extent this effect is mediated by maladaptive personality. METHODS: A sample of 2947 adults aged 18-65, consisting of healthy controls, persons with a prior history or current episode of depressive and/or anxiety disorders according to the Composite Interview Diagnostic Instrument were assessed in six waves at baseline (T0) and 1 (T

Testing the equivalence of the aversive core of personality and a blend of agreeableness(-related) items.

OBJECTIVE: There is an ongoing debate in personality research whether the common core of aversive ("dark") traits can be approximated by or even considered equivalent to one of the constructs that have been labeled "Agreeableness". In particular, it has been suggested that the low pole of (what we term) AG+, a broad blend of Big Five Agreeableness and the HEXACO factors Honesty-Humility, Agreeableness, and Altruism, is essentially equivalent to the Dark Factor of Personality (D). Based on theoretical differences, we herein test empirically whether D and AG+ are isomorphic. METHODS: Self-repor

Character Traits Predict Health and Well-Being beyond Personality.

We examined the incremental validity of character in predicting health outcomes and well-being beyond personality traits and investigated the extent to which health-related behaviors mediate the relationship between character and well-being. Findings indicate that several character cores (e.g., transcendence, fortitude) predict well-being, health behaviors, and health outcomes beyond different measures of personality traits, indicating that character is discriminable from personality as indicated by incremental prediction. In particular, fortitude, temperance, transcendence, and sincerity appe

Fulfilling the promise of the LPF: Comment on Morey et al. (2022).

In this commentary, I highlight a perceived reluctance in Morey et al.'s (2022) contribution to fully commit to a definition of the level of personality functioning (LPF), not as the functional consequence of extreme traits, but as an intrapsychic system that drives trait manifestation. I argue that for the LPF to reach its full potential to innovate the assessment and diagnosis of personality pathology beyond mere signs and symptoms, it is essential to define the LPF as a subjective meaning-making system located in biological systems that support the metacognitive capacities necessary for abs

Moderately Eccentric: Evidence for Dimensionality in the Latent Structure of Schizotypal Personality Features.

The authors investigated the latent structure of schizotypal personality features using taxometric analysis in a large sample of individuals from clinical and nonclinical populations. A total of 7,072 community adults and 270 psychiatric patients participated in the study by responding to the eccentricity, distrust, and isolation scales from the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory (IDCP). Data were analyzed using three different taxometric techniques, MAMBAC, MAXEIG, and L-Mode. The indicators proved valid for the taxometric analysis (d ≥ 1.25). The comparison curve fit index (CCFI) coe…

Personality and Affective Correlates of Openness to Experience from Big Five and HEXACO Personality Models: The Dual Nature of Big Five Openness.

Openness to Experience is considered to be one of the broadest personality traits. Different operationalizations of Openness to Experience within and between personality models incorporate various features of this trait. Differences in Openness facets across inventories may lead to differences in relation to certain outcomes. Hence, the current study looked to explore the personality and affective correlates of Openness domains and facets from the Big Five and HEXACO model. The sample consisted of 540 participants who completed measures assessing Openness to Experience domains and facets from

Uncovering the structure of antagonism.

Despite the advances in our understanding of the structure of personality and psychopathology (see Kotov et al., 2017), less attention has been paid to empirically examining their underlying facet structure. To gain a more nuanced understanding of the structure of personality, it is important to identify empirically derived lower order structures of these trait domains; thus, the present study sought to examine the structure of antagonism as represented by items from commonly used measures of pathological personality traits. Participants were recruited from a large, southeastern university (N

Personality organization and anxiety symptoms: Investigating the mediation of perfectionism.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Personality functioning has increasing significance in the assessment of mental health and mental disorders. Otto Kernberg's model of personality organization is an extensively applied, theoretically grounded approach to categorizing the severity of personality impairment based on intrapsychic and interpersonal functioning. The Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO) self-report rating scale and its 16-item short version were developed to assess personality organization based on this model. This study aimed (i) to examine the factor structure of the short, 16-item vers

Between the Pew and the Pulpit: Can Personality Measures Help Identify Sexually Abusive Clergy?

There has been limited conclusive research examining the personality characteristics of clergy who perpetrate abuse. To address this dearth of research, the current study aimed to develop a personality profile that distinguishes clergy members who sexually abuse children from other clergy. Personality and psychopathology were assessed using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) and the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III). Data were analyzed from a sample of clergy members, who comprised four comparison groups: clergy members referred to treatment for (a) ch…

Relationship between XBP1 genotype and personality traits assessed by TCI and NEO-FFI.

There have been several researches on the role of personality in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. Recently, a polymorphism of XBP1, a pivotal gene in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response, was shown to contribute to the genetic risk factor for bipolar disorder. Therefore, in this study, we examined the relationship between the XBP1 gene polymorphism and the personality traits assessed by two self-rating scales, a shortened version of Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) in healthy subjects. The present results suggested that the XBP

The thyroid function of Graves' disease patients is aggravated by depressive personality during antithyroid drug treatment.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that depressive personality (the scores of hypochondriasis, depression and psychasthenia determined by the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)) and daily hassles of Graves' disease (GD) patients treated long trem with antithyroid drug (ATD) were significantly higher in a relapsed group than in a remitted group, even in the euthyroid state. The present study aims to examine the relationship among depressive personality, emotional stresses, thyroid function and the prognosis of hyperthyroidism in newly diagnosed GD patients. A Twin Study of Normative Personality and DSM-IV Personality Disorder Criterion Counts: Evidence for Separate Genetic Influences.

OBJECTIVE: Both normative personality and DSM-IV personality disorders have been found to be heritable. However, there is limited knowledge about the extent to which the genetic and environmental influences underlying DSM personality disorders are shared with those of normative personality. The aims of this study were to assess the phenotypic similarity between normative and pathological personality and to investigate the extent to which genetic and environmental influences underlying individual differences in normative personality account for symptom variance across DSM-IV personality disorde

Do depressive traits and hostility predict age-related decline in general intelligence?

Certain personality traits are likely to be associated with stress and distress through the lifespan, and as a consequence these traits may influence the rate of age-related cognitive decline. The present study uses data from the Glostrup 1914 cohort to analyze potential effects of personality on decline in general intelligence over a 30-year period. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory was administered at a 50-year baseline exam, and from this inventory the Obvious Depression Scale and an abbreviated version of the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale were derived. At the 50-year baseline a…
