Nursing practices and complications associated with peripheral catheterization for outpatient antineoplastic therapy: scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: to map the evidence on nursing practices related to outpatient antineoplastic therapy using peripheral intravenous catheters and … and stabilization; and device removal and disposal. The most frequently reported complications were phlebitis, edema, pain, burning sensation, extravasation, and bloodstream infection. CONCLUSIONS: this study mapped peripheral intravenous catheterization practices for outpatient antineoplastic therapy into nine categories. The most common complications inc …

Mycotic aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta. Review and case report.

A 74-year-old male presented with bilateral invalidating claudication. A bilateral percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) with stenting of both superficial femoral arteries was performed but complicated by an urosepsis with Escherichia coli and a septic phlebitis at the site of an intravenous line. The phlebitis was complicated by a local abcedation for which incision and drainage were performed. One month after discharge he was readmitted at our hospital with septic fever and positive hemocultures for Escherichia coli. Positron emission tomography-computed tomographic scan (PET/CT-scan) …

Mystical Effect of Leech Therapy an Alternative Ayurvedic Intervention in Thrombophlebitis: A Case Report.

CONTEXT: Phlebitis, or vein inflammation, is a prevalent in peripheral intravenous cannula consequence that can have mechanical, chemical or bacterial causes. Phlebitis results in a series of unfavorable consequences, including severe discomfort, pain, failure of the PIVC, stoppage of the recommended therapy and need for the insertion of a new PIVC, which is linked with higher equipment costs and staff time and patient discomfort. Conventional treatment generally includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, compression therapy, and anticoagulants, but alternative therapies like Leech Therapy…

Septal granulomatous panniculitis: comparison of the pathology of erythema nodosum migrans (migratory panniculitis) and chronic erythema nodosum.

Fifty-eight cases of septal granulomatous panniculitis were reviewed; 14 cases were diagnosed as erythema nodosum migrans (migratory panniculitis) and 36 as chronic erythema nodosum on the basis of clinical and histopathologic features. Erythema nodosum migrans was characterized by markedly thickened and fibrotic septae, marked capillary proliferation (like granulation tissue), and massive granulomatous reaction (with giant cells) along the borders of the widened septa. Hemorrhage was rare, and phlebitis was not seen. Chronic erythema nodosum showed mild septal change, little fibrosis, and lym…

Effort thrombosis.

Venous thrombosis of the upper extremity can be very minor (superficial phlebitis from IV's) or quite dramatic (effort thrombosis of the axillary or subclavian veins). Rarely is it life threatening. Long-term sequelae are not seen.

IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis: a rare mesenteric disease of unknown etiology.

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare inflammatory and fibrosing disorder of unknown etiology, while IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) consists of mass-forming, fibroinflammatory lesions characterized by high serum IgG4 levels and tissue infiltration of many IgG4-positive plasma cells; obliterative phlebitis is common. This report describes a case of sclerosing mesenteritis that was considered a manifestation of IgG4-RD. A 53-year-old man underwent right hemicolectomy because of an ileocecal mass that did not improve with conservative therapy. The ill-defined fibroinflammatory lesion extended in the …

[Thrombangiitis obliterans: diagnosis and therapy in light of new immunological findings].

Thrombangiitis obliterans, a segmental, multilocal, inflammatory disease of the small and medium-sized arteries and veins, is characterized by the relatively juvenile onset of the disease, the peripheral localization of the arterial occlusions and by phlebitis saltans. Other diagnostic criteria are the absence of risk factors typical of atherosclerosis (except smoking), strictly localized occlusion on angiography, phasic clinical course, and exclusion of either collagen disease or essential thrombocytosis. A possible immunopathogenesis for the disease is increasingly favored. In our own study …

IgG4-related disease in thymus. A very rare case of chronic fibrosis mimicking sarcoidosis.

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a multi-organ immune-mediated chronic fibroinflammatory condition, with unclear certain etiology. It is morphologically characterized by storiform fibrosis, dense IgG4-positive lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, and obliterative phlebitis. It was recognized as a systemic condition as recently as 2003. IgG4-RD has been described in virtually every organ, forming sclerosing masses, and often mimicking tumors. Clinically, patients present unspecific symptoms and this condition is often recognized incidentally. The epidemiology remains poorly studied, but it has been n…

Both treatments were effective in rehydrating the patients within 48 hours, with no statistically significant difference between the groups. [Pseudophlebitis of the lower limbs. A critical study from 102 suspected cases of deep venous thrombosis].

Clinical diagnosis of deep venous thrombosis appears as uneasy, because of inconstant and non-specific symptoms. When studying a phlebitis, the risk to diagnose venous thrombosis is over 50 p. 100. This review of 102 patients, supposed to present with phlebitis, confirms such data. The diagnosis reliability depends mainly on the physician's experience. Examination and clinical research, combined with Doppler data make possible to perform a good diagnosis in 4 cases out of 5. However, in 20 p. 100, phlebography is strongly required, appearing as an essential examination. Analysis of epidemiolog…

Complications related to short peripheral intravenous catheters in patients with acute stroke: a prospective, observational, single-cohort study.

Review of IgG4-related Hashimoto Thyroiditis With Best Practice Recommendations for Diagnosis and Reporting.

Found in virtually any organ system, immunoglobulin (Ig) G4-related disease (RD) is a recently recognized immune-mediated, systemic, a fibroinflammatory disease characterized histologically by storiform fibrosis, obliterative phlebitis, and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate with IgG4-positive plasma cells (PCs). IgG4-related Hashimoto thyroiditis (IgG4-RHT), also called IgG4-related thyroiditis, shares many features with IgG4-RD but is distinct in several ways. A case of IgG4-RHT in a 51-year-old African American female is assembled together with a literature review which uncovered 82 cases of IgG4…

Variable vessel vasculitis of arteries and veins in VEXAS syndrome.

A man in his 50s receiving immunomodulatory therapy for presumed Behçet's disease presented with odynophagia and jaw pain. Three months earlier, he had developed deep vein thrombosis and extensive superficial phlebitis with transmural inflammation on histopathology. Imaging revealed carotid artery vasculitis and unilateral inflammation around the temporal vessels. Ultrasound demonstrated wall thickening of the right temporal vein with normal temporal arteries. Persistent systemic inflammation and bicytopenia prompted bone marrow examination revealing myelodysplastic syndrome. Detection of a so…
