Frequencies, bandwidths and magnitudes of vocal tract and surrounding tissue resonances, measured through the lips during phonation.

The frequencies, magnitudes, and bandwidths of vocal tract resonances are all important in understanding and synthesizing speech. High preci … tive load and airflow caused by opening the glottis further increase the bandwidths observed during phonation. The vocal tract walls are not rigid and measurements show an acousto-mechanical resonance R0 ∼ 20 Hz and anti-resonance R¯0∼200 Hz. These give an estimate of wall inertance consistent with an effective thickness of 1-2 cm and a wall stiffness of 2- …

Phonation threshold pressure predictions using viscoelastic properties up to 1,400 Hz of injectables intended for Reinke's space.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Viscoelastic properties of numerous vocal fold injectables have been reported but not at speaking frequencies. For materials intended for Reinke's space, ramifications of property values are of great concern because of their impact on ease of voice onset. Our objectives were: 1) to measure viscoelastic properties of a new nonresorbing carbomer and well-known vocal fold injectables at vocalization frequencies using established and new instrumentation, and 2) to predict phonation threshold pressures using a computer model with intended placement in Reinke's space. [Laryngeal control mechanisms during respiration and phonation analyzed by excitability changes of laryngeal motoneurons in decerebrate cats].

Laryngeal motoneurons (LMNs) innervating the intrinsic laryngeal muscles also control glottal movements such as swallowing, respiration and phonation. The present study was performed on decerebrate cats to clarify the laryngeal control mechanisms during respiration and phonation using extracellular single unit recordings from the nucleus ambiguus. First, functional differences among LMNs during the respiratory phases were investigated by analysis of the activity of LMNs innervating laryngeal adductor (TA-LCA: thyroarytenoid-lateral cricoarytenoid) or abductor (PCA: posterior cricoarytenoid) mu…

Estimating vocal fold stiffness: Using the relationship between subglottic pressure and fundamental frequency of phonation as an analog.

OBJECTIVE: The stiffness of the vocal folds is an important factor in voice production, yet clinically applicable measurements are still lacking. It has been demonstrated in an in vivo canine model that fundamental frequency (F0 ) increased linearly as subglottic pressure (Ps ) increased, but with a lesser slope for higher levels of vocal fold tension. In this study, the relationship between F0 and Ps was investigated using the airflow interruption method in awake patients non-invasively. DESIGN: Healthy volunteers enrolled for evaluation. SETTING: Single-centre. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-three

A computational study of the effect of false vocal folds on glottal flow and vocal fold vibration during phonation.

The false vocal folds are believed to be components of the acoustic filter that is responsible for shaping the voice. However, the effects of false vocal folds on the vocal fold vibration and the glottal aerodynamic during phonation remain unclear. This effect has implications for computational modeling of phonation as well as for understanding laryngeal pathologies such as glottal incompetence resulting from unilateral vocal fold paralysis. In this study, a high fidelity, two-dimensional computational model, which combines an immersed boundary method for the airflow and a continuum, finite-el…

Relationship between transglottal pressure and fundamental frequency of phonation, with effects of dehydration produced by atropine, in healthy volunteers.

We investigated the effects of the intravenous injection of atropine sulfate on the relationship between the fundamental frequency of phonation (F0) and the magnitude of F0 change per unit change in transglottal pressure (dF/dP) in 4 healthy male volunteers. Before the injection of atropine, we observed a nonlinear or V-shaped relationship between dF/dP and F0. After the injection, the values for dF/dP were reduced at a lower F0, whereas the values were unchanged at a higher F0. The results support our hypothesis that the relationship between dF/dP and F0 reflects adjustments in the length and…

Effects of transglottal pressure change on fundamental frequency of phonation: preliminary evaluation of the effect of intraoral pressure change.

The effect of transglottal pressure on the fundamental frequency of phonation was investigated in 14 subjects (12 adults and 2 children). A sudden change in intra-oral pressure was produced during sustained phonation. The effects of this pressure change were not monotonic, even within the modal register (around the upper end of the speaking range). The physical properties of the vocal folds related to the cricothyroid and thyroarytenoid muscles seemed to be important.

[Video-feedback therapy with the flexible nasopharyngoscope. The potentials for modifying velopharyngeal closure and phonation deficiencies in cleft patients].

Psychological interviews with cleft palate patients have revealed why a number of these patients do not profit, or do so only on a limited basis, from conventional speech therapy. They don't control articulation by means of the auditory canal. To treat these patients the video feedback therapy with the nasopharyngoscopy (Witzel et al.) was employed as the initial step. The next step was to expand on this method by establishing indication criteria, necessary diagnostic techniques, and an efficient therapy plan. In this paper a single case study is employed to discuss this method and show the re

[Phase relationship between dynamics of the subglottic pressure and oscillatory movement of the vocal folds. I. Sustained phonation].

The phase relationship between subglottic pressure and vocal fold length has been studied during sustained phonation in five subjects with normal larynx. Pressure was measured by tracheal puncture and vocal fold length was deduced from simultaneous measurement of translaryngeal impedance in the horizontal plane and transglottal light flux in the vertical plane. The pressure sine wave shows a phase lead of slightly less than 90 degrees relative to the length sine wave. Thus during sustained phonation the vocal apparatus behaves like a harmonic oscillator; the frequency of oscillation is determi…

Direct measurement and modeling of intraglottal, subglottal, and vocal fold collision pressures during phonation in an individual with a hemilaryngectomy.

The purpose of this paper is to report on the first in vivo application of a recently developed transoral, dual-sensor pressure probe that directly measures intraglottal, subglottal, and vocal fold collision pressures during phonation. Synchronous measurement of intraglottal and subglottal pressures was accomplished using two miniature pressure sensors mounted on the end of the probe and inserted transorally in a 78-year-old male who had previously undergone surgical removal of his right vocal fold for treatment of laryngeal cancer. The endoscopist used one hand to position the custom probe ag…
