Residual strain relaxation suppresses hot carrier cooling in 2D halide perovskites.

The extended hot-carrier (HC) lifetime boosts the efficiency of layered halide perovskites (LHPs) as photovoltaic devices. In this regard, residual structural strain plays a crucial role in carrier cooling dynamics, yet atomistic details of such influences remain largely unexplored in these complex hybrid materials. Here, we combine time-domain density functional theory, ab initio and non-adiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) to explore the impact of lattice strain relaxation on the HC dynamics in the stable Dion-Jacobson phase LHP (4F-PhDMA)PbBr4. Despite marginal changes in static structural a

Linking Surface Wettability to Interfacial Thermal Transport at Ti-Water Interfaces: A Molecular Dynamics Study.

Solid-liquid interfacial heat transfer plays a key role in microelectronic devices, energy systems, and liquid cooling technologies. However, the vibrational mismatch at solid-liquid interfaces produces an interfacial thermal resistance (ITR) that limits the heat-dissipation efficiency. Herein, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were used to study the regulation of heat transfer at Ti-water interfaces by the Ti-O interaction strength. As the interaction strength increased, the Ti surface changed from strongly hydrophobic to complete wetting, with the contact angle spanning 153° to θ < 5° over

Monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 with Excellent Thermoelectric Properties.

We obtained a new material called monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 by replacing metal atoms in 1T phase transition-metal dichalcogenide sulfides (TMDs) with octahedral Ag6 clusters. Subsequently, the thermoelectric transport properties of monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 were systematically investigated using first-principles calculations and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA-PBE) exchange correlation functional. The findings demonstrate that monolayer 1T-Ag6S2 displays characteristics of a wide-bandgap semiconductor, with a bandgap of 2.48 eV. Notably, the incorporation of Ag6 clusters disrupts the structural

Quantum crystal structure in the 250-kelvin superconducting lanthanum hydride.

The discovery of superconductivity at 200 kelvin in the hydrogen sulfide system at high pressures1 demonstrated the potential of hydrogen-rich materials as high-temperature superconductors. Recent theoretical predictions of rare-earth hydrides with hydrogen cages2,3 and the subsequent synthesis of LaH10 with a superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 250 kelvin4,5 have placed these materials on the verge of achieving the long-standing goal of room-temperature superconductivity. Electrical and X-ray diffraction measurements have revealed a weakly pressure-dependent Tc for LaH10 between 137

Laser-Induced Spin-Lattice Coupling and the Emergence of Ferrimagnetic State in Kagome Metal RbV3Sb5.

Light-matter interactions in frustrated Kagome metals provide a platform for investigating hidden quantum states, while the microscopic origin of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking remains under discussion. Here, spin-lattice coupling in RbV3Sb5 is found to induce rotational and time-reversal symmetry breaking through enhancement of a single-QM phonon mode. The resulting anisotropic lattice distortion lifts geometric frustration and stabilizes a non-equilibrium ferrimagnetic phase accompanied by an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. The calculations further indicate that coherent phonon excitatio

Layer breathing Raman mode in two-dimensional van der Waals magnet Cr2Ge2Te6.

We report the observation of a weak broad mode with characteristic dependence on thickness of flakes suggesting this as a layer breathing (LB) mode in(CGT) measured using Raman spectroscopy. Symmetry analysis confirms that the CGT falls under the non-polar category of layered material. The evolution of the LB mode frequency with increasing layer number () reveals a distinct softening trend, characteristic of weakening restoring forces in thicker flakes. By fitting the experimental Raman data using the linear chain model (LCM), we quantitatively extract the interlayer force constant (), providi

Inelastic neutron scattering study of methyl groups rotation in some methylxanthines.

The three isomeric dimethylxanthines and trimethylxanthine are studied by neutron spectroscopy up to energy transfers of 100 meV at energy resolutions ranging from 0.7 microeV to some meV. The loss of elastic intensity with increasing temperature can be modeled by quasielastic methyl rotation. The number of inequivalent methyl groups is in agreement with those of the room temperature crystal structures. Activation energies are obtained. In the case of theophylline, a doublet tunneling band is observed at 15.1 and 17.5 microeV. In theobromine, a single tunneling band at 0.3 microeV is found. Or

Large thermoelectric effect driven by high-order anharmonicity from synergistic lone-pair electrons and rattling modes in K3Au3Sb2.

Using first-principles calculations, self-consistent phonon theory and the Boltzmann transport equation, we investigate the effect of high-order anharmonicity on the thermal transport and thermoelectric properties of K3Au3Sb2. Through examination of atomic vibration modes, structural anisotropy and analysis of three- and four-phonon scattering processes, it is found that a lattice thermal conductivity (κL) as low as ∼0.5 W m-1 K-1 is achieved at room temperature. Our study reveals that the intrinsic ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κL) is primarily attributed to the pronounced quartic an

Pressure- and temperature-driven local structural stability and 5f/d hybridization in a metastable U-5.28 wt% Nb alloy.

Metastable U-Nb alloys near 6 wt% Nb are U-rich actinide metallic materials in which Nb substitution, lattice distortion, vibrational stability and U-5f electron delocalization are strongly coupled. While high-pressure experiments and simulations have clarified important aspects of U-6Nb and ordered U-Nb compounds, the atomistic stability response of dilute U-5.28 wt% Nb under pressure and temperature perturbations remains less resolved. Here, low-enthalpy structure searches, phonon spectra, projected density of states (PDOS) and AIMD-derived finite-temperature configurations are combined to r

Noncollinear ferrielectricity in a van der Waals crystal.

Inspired by noncollinear magnetic dipole order, noncollinear electric dipole order is anticipated to open up rich ferroelectric physics and new opportunities for device applications. However, establishing such order in single crystals remains challenging, as electric polarization is typically locked to crystallographic axes. Here we report noncollinear ferrielectricity in the van der Waals crystal WO2Br2, arising from competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phonon modes. The noncollinear dipole order of WO2Br2 is revealed by decoupling the antipolar and the polar displacement c

Defect Engineering for Synergistically Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance in n-Type CaTiO3 via Weakened Bond Polarity and Lattice Softening.

CaTiO3-based compounds have emerged as promising thermoelectric materials due to their environmental benignity, thermal stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the strong polar character of the metal-oxygen bonds imposes a fundamental limitation on the electrical conductivity, thereby restricting the overall thermoelectric performance. Herein, we demonstrate that defect engineering could induce synergistic effects, manifested in (i) a weakness of chemical bond polarity, which significantly enhances carrier mobility from ∼4.9 to ∼25.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 600 K. (ii) the introduction of substanti

Sodium and potassium mixed effect on thermal conductivity in a borosilicate glass.

To investigate the combined effects of sodium and potassium on thermal conductivity, a series of borosilicate glasses with precise compositions (65.0SiO2·5.0B2O3 (17.6 - x)Na2O·xK2O·7.5CaO·4.9MgO) was synthesized, where R = [K2O]/([Na2O] + [K2O]). As R increased systematically, a pronounced nonlinear variation in thermal conductivity, characteristic of the mixed alkali effect, was observed. Within the phonon gas model framework, the thermal conductivity was primarily governed by changes in sound velocity, as both volumetric heat capacity and phonon mean free path remained nearly constant acros

Magnetic Structure-Dependent Ultrafast Spin Relaxation in Magnet CrI3: A Time-Domain ab Initio Study.

Two-dimensional magnet CrI3 is a promising candidate for spintronic devices. Using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics and noncollinear spin time-dependent density functional theory, we investigated hole spin relaxation in two-dimensional CrI3 and its dependence on magnetic configurations, impacted by spin-orbit and electron-phonon interactions. Driven by in-plane and out-of-plane iodine motions, the relaxation rates vary, extending from over half a picosecond in ferromagnetic systems to tens of femtoseconds in certain antiferromagnetic states due to significant spin fluctuations, associated with

DNA Origami Colloidal Crystals: Opportunities and Challenges.

Over the last three decades, colloidal crystallization has provided an easy-to-craft platform for mesoscale engineering of photonic and phononic crystals. Nevertheless, the crystal lattices achieved thus far with commodity colloids are largely limited to symmetric and densely packed structures, restricting their functionalities. To obtain non-close-packed crystals and the resulting complexity of the available structures, directional binding between "patchy" colloids has been pursued. However, the conventional "patchy" colloids have been restricted to micrometer-scale spherical particles or clu

Diameter dependent thermoelectric properties of individual SnTe nanowires.

The lead-free compound tin telluride (SnTe) has recently been suggested to be a promising thermoelectric material. In this work, we report on the first thermoelectric study of individual single-crystalline SnTe nanowires with different diameters ranging from ∼218 to ∼913 nm. Measurements of thermopower S, electrical conductivity σ and thermal conductivity κ were carried out on the same nanowires over a temperature range of 25-300 K. While the electrical conductivity does not show a strong diameter dependence, the thermopower increases by a factor of two when the nanowire diameter is decreased
