Differential visual and auditory effects in a crossmodal induced Roelofs illusion.

For vision and audition to accurately inform judgments about an object's location, the brain must reconcile the variable anatomical correspondence of the eyes and ears, and the different frames of reference in which stimuli are initially encoded. To do so, it has been suggested that multisensory cues are eventually represented within a common frame of reference. If this is the case, then they should be similarly susceptible to distortion of this reference frame. Following this reasoning, we asked participants to locate visual and auditory probes in a crossmodal variant of the induced Roelofs e

Low-frequency rTMS to the parietal lobe increases eye-movement carryover and decreases hazard rating.

The persistence of attentional set from one task to a secondary unrelated task, revealed through carryover of eye movements, has been attributed to increased activation in the parietal lobe and decreased activation to the frontal lobe. To directly test this, we adopted a modified version of the Thompson and Crundall (2011) paradigm using low-frequency repetitive TMS to P3 and F3. In each trial, participants viewed letter-strings that were arranged horizontally, vertically, or randomly across the screen before viewing a road image and providing a hazardousness rating for it. The orientation of

Induction of specific brain oscillations may restore neural circuits and be used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Brain oscillations underlie the function of our brains, dictating how we both think and react to the world around us. The synchronous activity of neurons generates these rhythms, which allow different parts of the brain to communicate and orchestrate responses to internal and external stimuli. Perturbations of cognitive rhythms and the underlying oscillator neurons that synchronize different parts of the brain contribute to the pathophysiology of diseases including Alzheimer's disease, (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), epilepsy and other diseases of rhythm that have been studied extensively by G

"Safe" hyperbilirubinemia is associated with altered neonatal behavior.

Treatment of neonatal jaundice is currently recommended for higher bilirubinemia levels than before. Using the Brazelton Neonatal Behavior Assessment Scale, we found that a series of 28 healthy, untreated, term neonates with moderate bilirubinemia scored significantly less than an equal number of appropriately matched controls with low bilirubinemia for visual and auditory items, both inanimate and animate. Also, a greater lability of state, a lower self-quieting ability and more frequent tremors were found in the jaundiced group. We conclude that hyperbilirubinemia per se, even in the concent

[The neuronal responses of the caudate nucleus in the cat to sensory stimulation].

Responses of caudate neurons to a large variety of visual and other sensory stimuli were studied in alert cats. Sharp drops in the spontaneous activity of the unknown origin and differences in the activity level were revealed in adjacent parts of the caudate nucleus. The following types of neurons were recorded: neurons responding to visual stimulation; neurons responding to somatic stimulation; neurons responding to combined visual-somatic stimulation. The best response was observed to moving visual stimuli that attracted the animal's attention, alimentary objects specifically. The caudate nu

The causal involvement of the right supramarginal gyrus in the subjective experience of time: A hf-tRNS study.

Neural populations in the supramarginal gyrus (SMG) of the right hemisphere have been shown to be involved in processing the subjective experience of time, particularly because of their selectivity to specific temporal durations. To directly investigate this relationship, we applied high-frequency transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (hf-tRNS) on the right SMG during a duration judgment task: 24 participants were required to judge the duration of a test visual stimulus (350, 450, 550, 650 ms) as shorter or longer than the duration of a reference auditory stimulus (500 ms). In half of the tria

Light intensities required to suppress nocturnal melatonin secretion in albino and pigmented rats.

Sprague-Dawley albino rats or Long-Evans pigmented rats were exposed during the dark phase of the daily light:dark cycle to various intensities of a sunlight-stimulating white fluorescent light (0.022, 0.044, 0.110, 0.220, 0.440 or 2.200 microW/cm2) for 30 min; pineal glands and trunk blood samples were then collected and assayed for melatonin by radioimmunoassay. Albino rats exposed to irradiances of 0.110 microW/cm2 or less had pineal melatonin levels that were not significantly different from those of unexposed animals; higher irradiances significantly (P less than 0.001) reduced melatonin

Mitochondrial dysfunction in bipolar disorder.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in bipolar disorder based on the following lines of evidence: 1) Abnormal brain energy metabolism measured by 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy, that is, decreased intracellular pH, decreased phosphocreatine (PCr), and enhanced response of PCr to photic stimulation. 2) Possible role of maternal inheritance in the transmission of bipolar disorder. 3) Increased levels of the 4977-bp deletion in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in autopsied brains. 4) Comorbidity of affective disorders in certain types of mitochondrial disorders, such as autosomal inherited chro…

Experimental febrile convulsions in epileptic chickens: the anticonvulsant effect of elevated gamma-aminobutyric acid concentrations.

The high seizure susceptibility in epileptic chickens is due to an autosomal recessive mutation. In 3-day-old chicks homozygous for the epilepsy gene (epileptics), elevation of body temperature using microwave diathermy evoked an initial febrile seizure resembling the clonic seizures evoked in epileptic chicks by photic stimulation. After complete recovery, this was followed by a clonic-tonic seizure. In nonepileptic heterozygote hatchmates (carriers) of the same age, only the latter seizure pattern was observed. In 16- to 17-day-old chicks of either phenotype, both seizure patterns were obser…

Circadian-independent light regulation of mammalian metabolism.

The daily light-dark cycle is a key zeitgeber (time cue) for entraining an organism's biological clock, whereby light sensing by retinal photoreceptors, particularly intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells, stimulates the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus, a central pacemaker that in turn orchestrates the rhythm of peripheral metabolic activities. Non-rhythmic effects of light on metabolism have also been long known, and their transduction mechanisms are only beginning to unfold. Here, we summarize emerging evidence that, in mammals, light exposure or deprivation profound

Navigational affordances emerge stably with brief stimulus exposure despite changes in scene content.

Everyday life requires successful navigation often through complex and dynamic environments. The ability to identify efficient and safe routes of egress through scenes relies on perception of the navigational affordances of scenes. Recent behavioral work identified that navigational affordances of indoor urban environments can emerge with as little as 33 to 66 ms of stimulus presentation but only become stable with 132 ms and beyond. Here, we extend this to investigate the temporal emergence of navigational affordances using a more heterogeneous stimulus set that includes both indoor urban and

Frame effects across space and time.

When two probes are flashed at different times within a moving frame, they can be perceived as dramatically separated from each other even though they are at the same location in the display. This effect suggests that we perceive object position relative to the surrounding frame even when it is moving (Özkan et al., 2021). Here, eight experiments reveal new properties of this frame effect. First, the influence of the frame on the perceived probe positions extends beyond its bounding contours by several degrees of visual angle, both in the direction of the frame's motion and orthogonal to it. I

Perceiving surface reflectance requires attention.

Color constancy refers to our ability to distinguish changes in surface properties from changes in the properties of light illuminating the scene. The apparent ease with which we can tell that objects do not change in their surface properties, for example, when moving from sunlight to the shade, belies the complexity of solving this ill-constrained problem. Although there is a substantial body of work testing which image cues might be used to accomplish this, there is surprisingly little known about how the brain performs this computation. Here, we tested a fundamental aspect of the perceptual

What one sees depends on how far the eye has moved.

Humans explore visual scenes through frequent, rapid gaze shifts known as saccades. These movements redirect the high-acuity region of the retina toward objects of interest, thus selecting information based on location. Here, we show that saccade amplitude provides a separate and complementary form of selection, effectively filtering visual information by spatial frequency rather than location. Building on analyses of the resulting visual input signals, we examined how pattern visibility was influenced by the size of the preceding saccade. A reduction in saccade amplitude attenuates post-sacca
