Exercise, oxidative damage and effects of antioxidant manipulation.

Exercise induces free radical formation in muscle and liver, and oxidative damage, such as lipid peroxidation. The amount of damage depends on exercise intensity, training state and the tissue examined and can be reduced through dietary supplementation of antioxidants such as vitamin E and possibly coenzyme Q10. Supplementation with antioxidants does not increase maximal aerobic capacity or maximal exercise capacity; effects on endurance capacity are unclear. Deficiency of vitamin E or vitamin C greatly reduces endurance capacity, whereas selenium deficiency has no effect on endurance capacity

Toward Predicting Human Performance Outcomes From Wearable Technologies: A Computational Modeling Approach.

Wearable technologies for measuring digital and chemical physiology are pervading the consumer market and hold potential to reliably classify states of relevance to human performance including stress, sleep deprivation, and physical exertion. The ability to efficiently and accurately classify physiological states based on wearable devices is improving. However, the inherent variability of human behavior within and across individuals makes it challenging to predict how identified states influence human performance outcomes of relevance to military operations and other high-stakes domains. We de

Behavioral-independent features of complex heartbeat dynamics.

We test whether the complexity of the cardiac interbeat interval time series is simply a consequence of the wide range of scales characterizing human behavior, especially physical activity, by analyzing data taken from healthy adult subjects under three conditions with controls: (i) a "constant routine" protocol where physical activity and postural changes are kept to a minimum, (ii) sympathetic blockade, and (iii) parasympathetic blockade. We find that when fluctuations in physical activity and other behavioral modifiers are minimized, a remarkable level of complexity of heartbeat dynamics re

Synergistic potential of TREM2 agonists and exercise training in Alzheimer's disease.

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is a microglia-enriched receptor that regulates phagocytosis, lipid metabolism, and inflammation resolution in the brain. Loss or mutation of TREM2, including the R47H variant, impairs amyloid-β clearance and lipid handling, thereby increasing the risk and accelerating the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). TREM2 signaling couples debris recognition with mitochondrial activation and fatty acid oxidation, maintaining microglial energy balance and promoting a reparative phenotype. Pharmacologic TREM2 agonists, such as AL002, DNL919,

Zebrafish dspb-/- mutant as a model for non-dilated left ventricular cardiomyopathy: exploring cardiac dysfunction and exercise modulation.

Truncating variants in the DSP gene are associated with non-dilated left ventricular cardiomyopathy (ND-LVC), characterized by impaired ventricular function without dilation. The influence of physical activity in disease onset, severity, and progression in DSP variant carriers remains unclear. This study aimed to generate a zebrafish model carrying a human DSP truncating variant to characterize homozygous dspb-/- mutants in terms of cardiac function, structure, and gene expression. The impact of moderate and endurance exercise was additionally evaluated. Clinical data from human carriers were

Effects of exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor in Alzheimer's disease models: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

A growing body of research examining effects of exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) models, while due to differences in gender, age, disease severity, brain regions examined, and type of exercise intervention, findings of available studies were conflicting. In this study, we aimed to evaluate current evidence regarding effects of exercise on BDNF in AD models. Searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and EBSCO electronic databases, through July 20, 2023. We included studies that satisfied the following criteria: eligible studies

Decorin, an exercise-induced secretory protein, is associated with improved prognosis in breast cancer patients but does not mediate anti-tumorigenic tissue crosstalk in mice.

PURPOSE: Regular exercise can reduce incidence and progression of breast cancer, but the mechanisms for such effects are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanisms behind the protective effects of exercise. METHODS: We used a variety of rodent and human experimental model systems to determine whether exercise training can reduce tumor burden in breast cancer and to identify mechanism associated with any exercise training effects on tumor burden. RESULTS: We show that voluntary wheel running slows tumor development in the mammary specific polyomavirus middle

Forces and pressures beneath the saddle during mounting from the ground and from a raised mounting platform.

The objective was to use an electronic pressure mat to measure and compare forces and pressures of the saddle on a horse's back when riders mounted from the ground and with the aid of a mounting platform. Ten riders mounted a horse three times each from the ground and from a 35 cm high mounting platform in random order. Total force (summation of forces over all 256 sensors) was measured and compared at specific points on the force-time curve. Total force was usually highest as the rider's right leg was swinging upwards and was correlated with rider mass. When normalized to rider mass, total fo

The human pineal gland responds to stress-induced sympathetic activation in the second half of the dark phase: preliminary evidence.

Previous reports by our group and by others showed that the human pineal gland is unresponsive to stress-induced systemic sympathetic activation either during the day or 3 hrs after the beginning of darkness. In the present study, we investigated whether a longer period of dark exposure is required to demonstrate a stimulatory effect of stress-induced sympathetic activation on the human pineal gland. For this purpose, plasma melatonin levels were measured in six healthy men (aged 25-34 yrs) both in resting condition and before and after a physical exercise performed between 02.40 and 03.00 h,

Neural correlates of recognition memory obtained after encoding under conventional laboratory, virtual, and real-life conditions reveal modality-specific mnemonic processing.

Traditional psychological laboratory research provides fundamental insights into the functioning of human recognition memory. However, concerns have been raised whether recognizing simplified two-dimensional (2D) laboratory stimuli accurately reflects real-world retrieval processes of their three-dimensional (3D) physical counterparts. To explore potential differences in mnemonic processing, we conducted a comparative study using a conventional recognition memory task after encoding objects on a 2D screen (PC) or in a physical replica of the experimental setup. Additionally, the encoding envir

The impact of moderate and high intensity endurance exercise on acute murine coxsackievirus B3 myocarditis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Myocarditis is a group of inflammatory diseases of the myocardium, with viral infections being the leading cause. Previous murine studies have demonstrated a detrimental effect of extensive exercise on the acute course of viral myocarditis. Recently, we were the first to report that continuation of moderate exercise during murine viral myocarditis modulates myocardial inflammation and fibrosis at the late stage of disease, yet we did not evaluate early time points. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of moderate intensity training on the acute course of disease,

Molecular effects of exercise training in patients with cardiovascular disease: focus on skeletal muscle, endothelium, and myocardium.

For decades, we have known that exercise training exerts beneficial effects on the human body, and clear evidence is available that a higher fitness level is associated with a lower incidence of suffering premature cardiovascular death. Despite this knowledge, it took some time to also incorporate physical exercise training into the treatment plan for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). In recent years, in addition to continuous exercise training, further training modalities such as high-intensity interval training and pyramid training have been introduced for coronary artery disease p
