Simplified and highly accurate core temperature measurements.

A commercially available, highly accurate (+/- 0.01 degree C) thermistor catheter is described along with the feasibility of using this device to measure pulmonary artery blood temperature (core temperature) in appropriate thermoregulation studies. Intracardiac pressure monitoring, thermodilution cardiac output, and mixed venous blood sampling may also be performed with this catheter. In addition, other clinical situations which require temperature measurement such as diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia and monitoring patients after hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass surgery may benefit from t

Effects of exercise and eucapnic hyperventilation on bronchial clearance in man.

The effects of exercise and eucapnic hyperventilation on bronchial clearance were assessed in 10 healthy nonsmoking adults. A 99mTc-albumin aerosol was inhaled as a bolus in late inspiration under controlled conditions to produce deposition primarily in large airways. Lung retention of radioactivity was quantified using a gamma camera and subsequent computer analysis. Compared with quiet breathing (control), exercise significantly speeded clearance (P less than 0.05). Resting eucapnic hyperventilation at levels similar to those achieved during exercise produced less speeding. Compared to contr

Workload and Enjoyment Perception in Small-Sided Soccer Games: A Systematic Review of Studies in Untrained Children and Adolescents.

CONTEXT: Small-sided soccer games (SSSG) have been proposed as a strategy to promote the health of children and adolescents. Understanding training loads has a strong influence on program effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to describe the training load and perception of enjoyment during SSSG in untrained children and adolescents. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Scielo databases was performed. STUDY SELECTION: Experimental or observational studies conducted in untrained children or adolescents (6 to 18 years) that analyzed internal

Greater Psychophysiological Intensities in Conditioned Games May Impair Technical Performance: An Exploratory Study in Youth Male Soccer Players.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was 2-fold: (1) to examine the relationships between psychophysiological responses and locomotor demands with variations in technical performance during 2v2 and 4v4 conditioned games and (2) to compare psychophysiological and locomotor responses among players exhibiting higher and lower technical performance levels during the conditioned games. METHODS: Twenty-four male youth soccer players (16.3 ± 0.8 y old) participating at the trained/developmental level underwent monitoring for psychophysiological responses (including heart rate, rating of perceived exertion

Data Reduction Approaches to Athlete Monitoring in Professional Australian Football.

PURPOSE: To apply data reduction methods to athlete-monitoring measures to address the issue of data overload for practitioners of professional Australian football teams. METHODS: Data were collected from 45 professional Australian footballers from 1 club during the 2018 Australian Football League season. External load was measured in training and matches by 10-Hz OptimEye S5 and ClearSky T6 GPS units. Internal load was measured via the session rate of perceived exertion method. Perceptual wellness was measured via questionnaires completed before training sessions with players providing a rat

Aerobic threshold, anaerobic threshold, and maximal oxygen uptake of Japanese speed-skaters.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the physiologic and metabolic parameters of speed-skaters with different training regimes and performance level and examine some physiologic prerequisites for speed-skating. The subjects were 25 male speed-skaters including members of the 1984 Japanese National Speed Skating Team whose ages ranged from 19 to 25 years. Aerobic threshold (AerT), anaerobic threshold (AnT), and VO2max were determined during a progressive bicycle ergometer exercise. The power was increased by 12.25 W every 3 min to exhaustion. AerT was determined using gas exchange varia
