Comparison of Academic Performance and Preference for Teaching Modality Among Health Professions Students Taught Physiology Modules in the Rwandan Public University.

BACKGROUND: While online learning offers flexibility and expanded access to educational resources, concerns remain regarding its ability to support the complex conceptual understanding required in physiology education. We compared academic performance and preferences for teaching modality among undergraduate health professions students at University of Rwanda (UR). METHODS: A cross-sectional comparative study using historical cohorts was conducted among undergraduate students enrolled in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Clinical Psychology programmes at UR. Academic performance data from st

Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) Swallowing Physiology: Novel Dysphagia Model Across Lifespan.

Dysphagia, a pervasive global health issue, is increasingly prevalent with age (presbyphagia), significantly impacting well-being. Studying its complex mechanisms in humans is challenging, often necessitating animal models. Ideally, such models should combine close anatomical and physiological similarity to humans with practical attributes that facilitate longitudinal research, including ease of handling and housing, manageable lifespan, compressed developmental timelines, and high fecundity. Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), with their notable human-like similarities and practical advantages, r

The Acidic Stress Response of the Intracellular Pathogen Brucella melitensis: New Insights from a Comparative, Genome-Wide Transcriptome Analysis.

The intracellular pathogenic bacteria belonging to the genus Brucella must cope with acidic stress as they penetrate the host via the gastrointestinal route, and again during the initial stages of intracellular infection. A transcription-level regulation has been proposed to explain this but the specific molecular mechanisms are yet to be determined. We recently reported a comparative transcriptomic analysis of the attenuated vaccine Brucella melitensis strain Rev.1 against the virulent strain 16M in cultures grown under either neutral or acidic conditions. Here, we re-analyze the RNA-seq data

Looking back: tracing the origins of sleep across the animal kingdom.

The evolutionary purpose of sleep is an enduring biological mystery of the animal kingdom. Most research to date has investigated the processes that occur during sleep as opposed to why it evolved in the first place, and a recent theory proposes this behavior evolved to restrict activity to one temporal niche. Circadian rhythms are intimately linked to sleep, and in derived species, sleep-wake behaviors have been well characterized and are regulated by neuronal circuits. However, recent studies suggest sleep is also present in species lacking a centralized nervous system, and in this review, w

Current update on the role of endoanal ultrasound: a primer for radiologists.

Endoanal ultrasound (EAUS) is a valuable imaging modality for the evaluation of anal and perianal pathologies. It provides detailed information about the anatomy and physiology of the anorectal region and has been used in pre-and post-operative settings of anorectal pathologies. EAUS is not only useful in the evaluation of benign pathologies but also in loco-regional staging of anal and rectal tumors. EAUS has several advantages over MRI, including reduced cost, better patient tolerance, and improved scope of application in patients with contraindications to MRI. Despite its benefits, EAUS is

Non-invasive detection of human cardiomyocyte death using methylation patterns of circulating DNA.

Detection of cardiomyocyte death is crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. Here we use comparative methylome analysis to identify genomic loci that are unmethylated specifically in cardiomyocytes, and develop these as biomarkers to quantify cardiomyocyte DNA in circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) derived from dying cells. Plasma of healthy individuals contains essentially no cardiomyocyte cfDNA, consistent with minimal cardiac turnover. Patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction show a robust cardiac cfDNA signal that correlates with levels of troponin and creatine

Effects of mammarenavirus infection (Wēnzhōu virus) on the morphology of Rattus exulans.

The circulation of mammarenaviruses in rodent populations of the Mekong region has recently been established, with a genetic variant of Wēnzhōu virus, Cardamones virus, detected in two Rattus species. This study tests the potential teratogenic effects of Wēnzhōu infection on the development of a Murid rodent, Rattus exulans. Using direct virus detection, morphological records and comparative analyses, a link was demonstrated between host infection status and host morphologies (the spleen irrespective of weight, the skull shape and the cranial cavity volume) at the level of the individual (fema

Acid-base transport in pancreas-new challenges.

Along the gastrointestinal tract a number of epithelia contribute with acid or basic secretions in order to aid digestive processes. The stomach and pancreas are the most extreme examples of acid (H(+)) and base (HCO(-) 3) transporters, respectively. Nevertheless, they share the same challenges of transporting acid and bases across epithelia and effectively regulating their intracellular pH. In this review, we will make use of comparative physiology to enlighten the cellular mechanisms of pancreatic HCO(-) 3 and fluid secretion, which is still challenging physiologists. Some of the novel trans

Xenotransplantation: state of the art.

Today, at the beginning of the xenogeneic era of transplantation, only simple and single observations about comparative physiology and biochemistry, and even anatomy, are known. Very few data exist which in addition inform about mechanisms after successful xenotransplantation. Nothing is known about phenomena following successfully suppressed hyperacute xenogeneic rejection. Neither the elimination of single factors nor the mitigation of whole systems have led to clinically relevant survival times. Pig organs transplanted into nonhuman primates survived a maximum of 22 days. The hope that tran

Contributions of aquatic organisms to understanding the vertebrate ocular lens.

Aquatic species have played a vital role over the past 200 years in detailing the structure, physiology, development, and evolution of the ocular lens. As a living piece of biological "glass", the lens must balance the optical demands of transparency and refractive power with the requirements of a metabolically active tissue. Lens researchers have leveraged unique aspects of aquatic species, such as 1) the lack of corneal refraction and the simplification of modeling aquatic lens optics, 2) the presence of external embryos for real-time observation of eye and lens development, and 3) the diver

Zebrafish sox9b+ cells function as intestinal stem cells for epithelial homeostasis and regeneration.

Intestinal stem cells (ISCs) are essential for maintaining epithelial homeostasis and driving tissue regeneration. The zebrafish intestine features a distinctive furrow-ruga architecture and lacks the crypt structures characteristic of mammalian intestines, leaving its ISC identity elusive. Characterizing zebrafish stem cell populations and their molecular markers is informative for intestinal physiology and evolution. Here, we identify sox9b+ cells residing within the proliferative zone of intestinal furrows as functional zebrafish ISCs. These cells contribute to epithelial turnover during ho

Co-profiling of single-cell gene expression and chromatin landscapes in stickleback pituitary.

The pituitary gland is a key endocrine gland with various physiological functions including metabolism, growth, and reproduction. It comprises several distinct cell populations that release multiple polypeptide hormones. Although the major endocrine cell types are conserved across taxa, the regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and chromatin organization in specific cell types remain poorly understood. Here, we performed simultaneous profiling of the transcriptome and chromatin landscapes in the pituitary cells of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), which represents a goo

Guinea Pig Preimplantation Embryos: Generation, Collection, and Immunofluorescence.

Studying various animal models is important for comparative biology and to better understand evolutionary development. Furthermore, when aiming to translate findings to human development, it is crucial to select an appropriate animal model that closely resembles the specific aspect of development under study. The guinea pig is highlighted as a useful platform for reproductive studies due to similarities in in utero development and general physiology with the human. This chapter outlines the methods required for guinea pig mating and collection of embryos for in vitro culture and molecular char

Environmental endocrine disruptors and amphibian immunity: A bridge between the thyroid hormone axis and T cell development.

Immunity is susceptible to reprogramming by environmental chemical and endocrine signals. Notably, numerous thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDCs) have the potential to perturb immune endpoints, but data are lacking on the mechanisms by which TDCs can influence the development of the immune system. T cell immunity is particularly vulnerable to modulation by TDCs during thymic education, differentiation, and selection. The following review discusses the ways in which thyroid hormones may influence T cell development, as well as emerging TDCs with potential to impact both thyroid hormone physiology

Patent ductus arteriosus: pathophysiology and management.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm newborns prior to 28 weeks of gestation has led to many challenges regarding the type and timing of treatment regimens. A PDA results in increased pulmonary blood flow and redistribution of flow to other organs. Several co-morbidities (i.e., necrotizing enterocolitis, intracranial hemorrhage, pulmonary edema/hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and retinopathy) are associated with the presence of a PDA, but whether or not a PDA is responsible for their development is still unclear. The prostaglandin inhibitor, indomethacin, is effective in the treat

Patient-reported swallowing burden and FEES findings in disease-free oropharyngeal cancer survivors after chemoradiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a frequent long-term sequela in survivors of oropharyngeal cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT), with significant impact on quality of life (QoL). Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) provides objective information on swallowing physiology, whereas patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) capture perceived dysphagia burden. This study explored how FEES findings and PROMs provide complementary information regarding dysphagia in disease-free survivors treated with CRT. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 38 disease-free su

Comparative Assessment of Aspergillosis by Virtual Infection Modeling in Murine and Human Lung.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous opportunistic fungal pathogen that can cause severe infections in immunocompromised patients. Conidia that reach the lower respiratory tract are confronted with alveolar macrophages, which are the resident phagocytic cells, constituting the first line of defense. If not efficiently removed in time, A. fumigatus conidia can germinate causing severe infections associated with high mortality rates. Mice are the most extensively used model organism in research on A. fumigatus infections. However, in addition to structural differences in the lung physiology of
