Pityriasis lichenoides and its subtypes.

Pityriasis lichenoides represents a unique group of inflammatory skin disorders that include pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta (PLEVA), febrile ulceronecrotic Mucha-Habermann disease (a subtype of PLEVA), and pityriasis lichenoides chronica. The history, epidemiology, clinical features, pathophysiology, and treatment of this group of conditions are reviewed in this manuscript.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris, type IV.

A 4-year-old girl presented with a 3-year history of demarcated, salmon-pink, hyperkeratotic plaques, which were symmetrically distributed on the elbows, knees, ankles, and dorsal aspects of the hands and feet. A diffuse, orange-pink palmoplantar keratoderma was also evident. Clinical and histologic findings were consistent with a diagnosis of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP), type IV (circumscribed juvenile). Type IV PRP develops in prepubertal children, is typically localized to the distal aspects of the extremities, and has an unpredictable course. Although ultraviolet (UV) radiation can pote…

Intertriginous lesions in pityriasis versicolor.

BACKGROUND: The well-recognized sites of involvement in pityriasis versicolor are the upper part of the trunk, the neck and the upper arms. There is little documentation regarding pityriasis versicolor lesions in flexural areas. OBJECTIVES: To study the occurrence and morphology of lesions of pityriasis versicolor in flexural areas. METHODS: One hundred and ten cases of pityriasis versicolor were studied. Sites of lesions and other clinical features were determined. RESULTS: Flexural lesions in pityriasis versicolor were not uncommon. They were not correlated to age, sex, duration or relaps…

Pityriasis rubra pilaris in children.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is an uncommon dermatosis in children. Few long-term studies on the treatment and prognosis of PRP in children have been performed. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to retrospectively review the clinical course and treatment of all cases of PRP in children 19 years or younger who were seen at the Mayo Clinic. METHODS: The clinical courses of the 30 patients with PRP seen at the Mayo Clinic between 1975 and 1997 were reviewed. RESULTS: The most common presenting form of PRP in children is the type III juvenile form (Griffiths' criteria). Treatment ranged …

Case report. Erythrasmoid pityriasis versicolor.

A 50-year-old Caucasian man with pityriasis versicolor that was localized almost exclusively in the inguinal folds and was characterized by lesions clinically superimposable on those of erythrasma is described. Due to these clinical characteristics, it is proposed that this variety of pityriasis versicolor is defined as 'erythrasmoid'.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris with acantholysis.

Two patients developed a papulosquamous eruption in a widespread distribution which progressed with islands of sparing of uninvolved skin characteristic clinically of adult-onset pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP). Biopsies from both patients showed multiple areas of nonfollicular and follicular suprabasilar and intra-epidermal acantholysis with minimal dyskeratosis. They also showed the usual histologic features of PRP with a thickened orthokeratosis and parakeratosis, a retained and sometimes thickened granular cell layer, and psoriasiform epidermal hyperplasia with a perivascular lymphohistiocy…

Penile involvement in pityriasis versicolor.

Pityriasis versicolor is a superficial fungal infection of the skin caused by Malassezia furfur (Pityrosporum orbiculare) which is a part of the normal flora of the human skin. The factors which govern the pathogenic conversion of this fungus are not fully understood but a hot humid environment is considered to be a predisposing factor and the disease is very common in tropical countries. Clinically the disease is characterized by scaly hypo- or hyperpigmented macular lesions that are typically located in the trunk, neck and upper arms. The penis is rarely affected. In this report a patient of…

Pityriasis alba: a histologic study.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis alba is a common dermatitis, but only a few histologic studies have been reported and most of these maintain that its microscopic features are those of a chronic nonspecific dermatitis. METHODS: A retrospective light microscopic study was performed on biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with localized pityriasis alba on face, arms and forearms without signs of atopy. Thirty-two patients were girls or women and seven were boys or men, with ages ranging from 7 to 37 years. The duration of illness varied from 1 month to 10 years. The clinical picture was characterized …

Pityriasis lichenoides and lymphomatoid papulosis.

The clinical features, histopathology, immunopathology, and management of pityriasis lichenoides and lymphomatoid papulosis are discussed, with particular emphasis on the pediatric aspects of these conditions. The difficulties in logically separating pityriasis lichenoides into an acute (pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta) and a chronic (pityriasis lichenoides chronical) form are addressed. The development of lymphoreticular malignancy in patients with lymphomatoid papulosis has been well documented, but pityriasis lichenoides has characteristically been regarded as a benign conditi…

Clinicopathologic study on pityriasis alba.

Pityriasis alba (PA) is a relatively common skin disorder usually seen in children and young adults characterized by the presence of superficial hypopigmented macules. A clinicopathologic study on pityriasis alba was undertaken which showed an increased occurrence of the disease in preadolescent children with an equal incidence in boys and girls, and a predominance of white over black patients. There was an increased personal history of atopy and the skin lesions were found to occur most frequently in the arms and face followed by the legs and the trunk. Histologic evaluation of biopsy specime…

Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor in infancy.

Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor is a common disorder of adults. We cared for five infants (four males and one female) with the disease. Diagnosis was confirmed by potassium hydroxide preparation demonstrating the filaments of Malassezia furfur and/or Pityrosporum orbiculare, the yeast form. Three patients had lesions in the neonatal period. The mother of one baby had pityriasis versicolor. Two patients were siblings. One baby had associated atopic dermatitis and two had a positive family history of atopy.
