Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics to counteract sarcopenia: where are we now and what challenges need to be faced?

Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and strength, is a contributor to frailty and reduced quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests an emerging role of the gut microbiome in modulating skeletal muscle through microbial species and metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), potentially influencing inflammation, nutrient absorption, and glucose and protein metabolism. This review considers the potential of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics as interventions to mitigate sarcopenia based on animal and human studies, while providing a critique of present barriers tha

Current treatment options for adult patients with short bowel syndrome: Do prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics play a role?

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a malabsorptive disorder characterized by reduced small intestinal length that results in nutrient deficiencies. Most commonly in adults, it occurs in the setting of surgical bowel resection related to trauma, infarction, or inflammatory bowel disease. Management principles include optimizing nutrition and hydration status via parenteral nutrition and oral diet and utilizing antisecretory, antimotility, and enterohormone agents to enhance intestinal absorption, facilitate intestinal adaptation, and reduce stool output. Other therapeutics include antibiotics to tre

Preventing chemotherapy-induced diarrhea and microbiota imbalances with prebiotics and probiotics in breast cancer treatment: A case report.

Breast cancer (BC) is the second most common cancer in women in the United States. Of those diagnosed, 40-80% will undergo chemotherapy. Adverse effects of chemotherapy are chemotherapy-induced diarrhea (CID) and gut microbiota dysregulation. CID can lead to dehydration, metabolic acidosis, malnutrition, and gut dysbiosis. Antidiarrheal medications are the standard treatment of care; however, this has been shown to further contribute to gut dysbiosis, is not always effective in controlling diarrhea, and can lead to rebound constipation with the potential of pathogenic bacterial overgrowth. Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics regulate the intestinal microbiota differentially and restore the relative abundance of specific gut microorganisms.

Fermented milk is an effective carrier for probiotics, the consumption of which improves host health. The beneficial effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics on gut dysbiosis have been reported previously. However, the way in which specific probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics regulate intestinal microbes remains unclear. Therefore, the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus AS 1.2466 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus ATCC 11842 and the prebiotics xylooligosaccharide and red ginseng extracts were fed to mice to determine their effects on the intestinal microbiota. Then, mice

Review on the effects of potential prebiotics on controlling intestinal enteropathogens Salmonella and Escherichia coli in pig production.

Salmonella enterica serotypes (Salmonella sp.) are the second cause of bacterial foodborne zoonoses in humans after campylobacteriosis. Pork is the third most important cause for outbreak-associated salmonellosis, and colibacillosis is the most important disease in piglets and swine. Attachment to host cells, translocation of effector proteins into host cells, invasion and replication in tissues are the vital virulence steps of these pathogens that help them to thrive in the intestinal environment and invade tissues. Feed contamination is an important source for Salmonella infection in pig pro

Probiotics and prebiotics for severe acute malnutrition (PRONUT study): a double-blind efficacy randomised controlled trial in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition affects 13 million children worldwide and causes 1-2 million deaths every year. Our aim was to assess the clinical and nutritional efficacy of a probiotic and prebiotic functional food for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition in a HIV-prevalent setting. METHODS: We recruited 795 Malawian children (age range 5 to 168 months [median 22, IQR 15 to 32]) from July 12, 2006, to March 7, 2007, into a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled efficacy trial. For generalisability, all admissions for severe acute malnutrition treatment were eligible for re

Vitamin D and prebiotics for intestinal health in cystic fibrosis: Rationale and design for a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, 2 x 2 trial of administration of prebiotics and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) (Pre-D trial) in adults with cystic fibrosis.

Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) have dysfunctional intestinal microbiota and increased gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation also known as GI dysbiosis. It is hypothesized that administration of high-dose cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) together with a prebiotic (inulin) will be effective, and possibly additive or synergistic, in reducing CF-related GI and airway dysbiosis. Thus, a 2 x 2 factorial design, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, pilot and feasibility, clinical trial was proposed to test this hypothesis. Forty adult participants with CF were block-randomized into one of four groups:

Nutritional Interventions Targeting the Gut Microbiome in MASLD: From Prebiotics and Probiotics to Postbiotics and Fecal Microbiota Transplantation.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a highly prevalent liver-centred manifestation of systemic metabolic dysfunction. The gut-liver axis provides a biologically credible therapeutic rationale because intestinal dysbiosis, impaired barrier integrity, microbial metabolites, bile acid signalling, short-chain fatty acids, and trimethylamine N-oxide may influence hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrogenesis. This narrative review critically evaluates dietary patterns, prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) as

Prebiotics attenuate depressive-like behavior, neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity in Parkinson's disease by modulating butyrate-producing gut bacteria.

Parkinson's disease (PD) remains a challenging disease for treatment, which is usually polypharmacological. In addition to motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms such as depression are present in approximately 40% of patients, contributing to the loss of quality of life. In the last two decades, a growing body of evidence has emerged regarding the involvement of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in both PD and depression. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that can be fermented by the gut microbiota, which produce metabolites called short-chain fatty ac

Synergistic bioactivity and application of polysaccharide-based prebiotics and probiotics on animal feed, foods and medicines: a review.

Probiotics are microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host, and a growing body of research has verified that the comprehensive development and application of probiotic resources will have a significant positive impact on humanity. As an important and typical type of prebiotic, polysaccharides are high-molecular-weight biopolymers connected via glycosidic linkages, possessing excellent physicochemical properties and bioactivities. However, the synergistic bioactivity and application of polysaccharide-based prebiotics and probiotics have not yet received sufficient attention. Therefor

Targeting the Gut-Bone Axis with Prebiotics, Probiotics, Synbiotics, and Postbiotics: From Mechanistic Plausibility to Clinical Bone Outcomes.

Osteoporosis is a major skeletal disorder. Increasing evidence suggests that gut microbiota-derived mechanisms may contribute to bone remodeling. The biological rationale for a gut-bone axis is well supported, but the clinical relevance of microbiome-targeted interventions remains uncertain. In this narrative review, we focus on prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics. We searched in the literature the progress from mechanistic observations to measurable skeletal outcomes in humans. We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for literature published mainly between 2021 and 2026

Effects of Pea (Pisum sativum) Prebiotics on Intestinal Iron-Related Proteins and Microbial Populations In Vivo (Gallus gallus).

Iron deficiency remains a public health challenge globally. Prebiotics have the potential to improve iron bioavailability by modulating intestinal bacterial population, increasing SCFA production, and stimulating expression of brush border membrane (BBM) iron transport proteins among iron-deficient populations. This study intended to investigate the potential effects of soluble extracts from the cotyledon and seed coat of three pea (Pisum sativum) varieties (CDC Striker, CDC Dakota, and CDC Meadow) on the expression of BBM iron-related proteins (DCYTB and DMT1) and populations of beneficial in

Prebiotics modulate the microbiota-gut-brain axis and ameliorate anxiety and depression-like behavior in HFD-fed mice.

Previous research has demonstrated that Prebiotics can influence the composition of the gut microbiota, consequently impacting mood regulation. This study aimed to assess the effects of Prebiotics, specifically Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) on neuroinflammation, depression, and anxiety-like behavior in a mouse model fed a high-fat diet (HFD). Initially, mice were divided into two groups: a control group on a standard diet (n = 15) and a group on an HFD for 18 weeks (n = 45). By the 13th week, the HFD group was further divided into experimental groups: Control (

Probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics improved the functionality of aquafeed: Upgrading growth, reproduction, immunity and disease resistance in fish.

Aquaculture plays an increasingly significant role in improving the sustainability of global fish production. This sector has been intensified with the advent of new husbandry practices and the development of new technology. However, the increasing intensification and indiscriminate commercialized farming has enhanced the vulnerability of cultivated aquatic species to damage from pathogens. In efforts to confront these various diseases, frequent use of drugs, antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, and agents for sterilization have unintentionally added to the risk of transmission of pathogens and har
