The description-experience gap in risky choice in nonhuman primates.

Risk attitudes in humans depend on the format used to present the gamble: we are more risk-averse for common gambles in the gains domain whose properties are described to us verbally than for those whose properties we learned about solely through experience. This difference, which constitutes part of the description-experience gap, is important, because it highlights the role of knowledge acquisition in decision-making. The reasons for the gap remain obscure, but could depend upon uniquely human cognitive abilities, such as those associated with language. Thus, the gap may or may not extend to

Sickness behaviour associated with non-lethal infections in wild primates.

Non-lethal parasite infections are common in wildlife, but there is little information on their clinical consequences. Here, we pair infection data from a ubiquitous soil-transmitted helminth, the whipworm (genus Trichuris), with activity data from a habituated group of wild red colobus monkeys (Procolobus rufomitratus tephrosceles) in Kibale National Park, Uganda. We use mixed-effect models to examine the relationship between non-lethal parasitism and red colobus behaviour. Our results indicate that red colobus increased resting and decreased more energetically costly behaviours when shedding

Immune Response to Marburg Virus Angola Infection in Nonhuman Primates.

BACKGROUND: The 2005 outbreak of Marburg virus (MARV) infection in Angola was the most lethal MARV infection outbreak in history, with a case-fatality rate (90%) similar to that for Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV) infection. However, very little is known about the pathogenicity of MARV Angola, as few studies have been conducted to date. Therefore, the immune response was examined in MARV Angola-infected nonhuman primates. METHODS: Cynomolgus macaques were infected with MARV Angola and monitored for survival. The effect of MARV Angola on the immune system was examined by immunophenotyping whole-blood

Ultrasonographic examination in non-human primates with acute abdomen signs.

BACKGROUND: The acute abdomen is any abdominal disorder resulting in pain, shock, or sepsis. Although it has a multifactorial etiology, the primary cause is gastrointestinal tract pathology. The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of abdominal ultrasound as a complementary diagnostic tool in non-human primates with an acute abdomen. METHODS: Three different non-human primates with clinical signs of acute abdomen were evaluated as follows: a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), a tufted capuchin (Cebus apella), and a black-tufted marmoset (Callithrix penicillata). RESULTS: Ultrasonograp

Spontaneous cervicovaginal lesions and immune cell infiltrates in nonhuman primates.

Nonhuman primates, particularly rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), provide important model systems for studying human reproductive infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus, human papillomavirus, and Chlamydia spp. An understanding of the spectrum of spontaneous cervical disease provides essential context for interpreting experimental disease outcomes in the female reproductive tract. This retrospective study characterizes the incidence of inflammatory and/or proliferative cervicovaginal lesions seen over a 14-year period in a multispecies nonhuman primate colony, focusing on rhe

Highly divergent Staphylococcus aureus isolates from African non-human primates.

Staphylococcus aureus is a bacterium that colonizes and infects both humans and animals. As little is known about the phenotypic and molecular characteristics of S. aureus from wild animals in sub-Saharan Africa, the objective of the study was to characterize S. aureus isolates from wildlife and to analyse if they differed from those found among humans. The resistance to penicillin was low in S. aureus isolates from non-human primates (2.9%). Phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences from multilocus sequence typing revealed two highly divergent groups of isolates. One group was

[Leptospiral antibodies in a Colombian zoo's neotropical primates and workers].

OBJECTIVE: Detecting antibodies against Leptospira spp. in Neotropical primates and workers in a Colombian Zoo and identifying the risk factors associated with the disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed regarding 65 Neotropical primates and 20 zookeepers. The samples were processed by microagglutination test (MAT) using a reference strain collection consisting of 21 Leptospira serovars. The people being evaluated were given a structured survey to identify risk factors. RESULTS: There was 25 % (5/20) Leptospira spp. infection seroprevalence in the staff and 23.07 % (15/65) in

Naturally acquired visceral leishmaniasis in non-human primates in Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a chronic and often fatal protozoal disease that is endemic in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). Leishmania sp. is an intracellular obligatory parasite of macrophages that can naturally infect several mammalian species. Non-human primates (NHP) have been used as experimental models for infection with Leishmania of the donovani complex. The present report describes a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a black-fronted titi. Among 41 primates kept in captivity in a zoo in Belo Horizonte (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil), one animal, a black-fronted titi (

Spectrum of infantile esotropia in primates: Behavior, brains, and orbits.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies of human infants have described a spectrum of early-onset esotropia, from small angle to large heterotropias. We report here a similar spectrum of early-onset esotropia in infant monkeys, with emphasis on the relationship between visuomotor deficits, central nervous system circuitry, and orbital anatomy. METHODS: Eye movements were recorded in macaque monkeys with natural, infantile-onset esotropia (n = 7) and in control monkeys (n = 2) to assess alignment, latent nystagmus, dissociated vertical deviation (DVD), and pursuit/optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) asymmetries.

Comparative neuropathogenesis and neurovirulence of attenuated flaviviruses in nonhuman primates.

Based on previous preclinical evaluation in mice and monkeys, the chimeric TBEV/DEN4Delta30 virus, carrying the prM and E protein genes from a highly virulent Far Eastern strain of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) on the backbone of a nonneuroinvasive dengue type 4 virus (DEN4), has been identified as a promising live attenuated virus vaccine candidate against disease caused by TBEV. However, prior to use of this vaccine candidate in humans, its neurovirulence in nonhuman primates needed to be evaluated. In the present study, we compared the neuropathogeneses of the chimeric TBEV/DEN4Delta

Prolongation of levodopa responses by glycineB antagonists in parkinsonian primates.

To examine the antiparkinsonian effects of blocking glycineB receptors, we designed a pilot study testing the potent and selective antagonist, PAMQX, in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-treated primates. PAMQX had no intrinsic effects but markedly potentiated the antiparkinsonian action of levodopa. In a dose-dependent fashion, coadministration of the glycineB antagonist with levodopa extended the response duration by nearly 60%. It is noteworthy that PAMQX, within a considerable dose range, did not cause ataxia or other side effects. These data indicate that blocking N-methyl-D-as

Pharmacokinetics, methionine depletion, and antigenicity of recombinant methioninase in primates.

Pharmacokinetics, methionine depletion, antigenicity, and toxicity of recombinant methioninase (rMETase), which has shown efficacy in achieving cell kill in a broad range of human tumor models, were examined in macaque monkeys. Dose-ranging studies at 1000, 2000, and 4000 units/kg i.v. identified the 4000 units/kg dose as able to reduce plasma methionine to an undetectable level (less than 0.5 microM) by 30 min, and the level so remained for 8 h. Pharmacokinetic analysis showed that rMETase was eliminated with a T(1/2) of 2.49 h. A 2-week i.v. administration of 4000 units/kg every 8 h/day for

Mapping dopamine function in primates using pharmacologic magnetic resonance imaging.

Dopamine (DA) receptors play a central role in such diverse pathologies as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and drug abuse. We used an amphetamine challenge combined with pharmacologic magnetic resonance imaging (phMRI) to map DA-associated circuitry in nonhuman primates with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Seven control cynomolgous monkeys and 10 MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine)-treated parkinsonian primates were studied longitudinally using both positron emission tomography (PET) and phMRI. Amphetamine challenge (2.5 mg/kg, i.v.) in control monkeys increased re

Sero-epizootiologic survey of Trypanosoma brucei in Kenyan nonhuman primates.

Blood samples were collected from 121 individuals of three species of wild-caught nonhuman primates from Kenya, including African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops), Syke's monkeys (C. mitis), and olive baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis), and were examined for circulating Trypanosoma brucei and for T. brucei antigen and anti-trypanosome antibody. Indirect antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detected titers of anti-T. brucei antibodies in 13 of the primates sampled, and field-oriented latex agglutination test detected invariant T. brucei antigens in 10 (8.3%) of the primates. Health evaluation of translocated free-ranging primates in French Guiana.

Among over 40 mammal species threatened by the filling of a hydroelectric dam reservoir in French Guiana, three species of primates have been translocated, comprising 124 red howler monkeys, six white-faced sakis, and 95 golden-handed tamarins. Health status of the animals was evaluated by direct physical examination and by hematological, biochemical, virological, and parasitological surveys of collected blood. The physical condition of the howlers was slightly worse toward the end of the capture period, but that of sakis and tamarins remained satisfactory. Several ectoparasites (ticks, larvae

Dopamine transporter loss and clinical changes in MPTP-lesioned primates.

Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and the dopamine (DA) transporter tracer, 2 beta-carboxymethoxy-3 beta-(4-iodophenyl)tropane ([123I]beta-CIT), were used to determine DA transporter density in 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-lesioned monkeys with varying degrees of parkinsonism. The clinical stage of parkinsonism corresponded to SPECT measures of striatal DA transporter density suggesting that more severe parkinsonism was associated with a greater degree of dopaminergic terminal degeneration. These findings are similar to those reported earlier using posi

Threat to Humans from Virus Infections of Non-human Primates.

Several hundred distinct non human primate species are recognised, and they are likely to harbour a similar range of viruses to humans. Simians such as cynomolgus and rhesus macaques, African green monkeys, and marmosets are widely used for biomedical research, but despite this extensive close contact very few simian viruses have been shown to pose a threat of infection or illness to humans. Herpesvirus Simiae is the best recognised zoonotic hazard of simians. It is an alphaherpes virus of Asiatic macaques, which causes a mild or subclinical primary infection followed by latency in its natural

Growth hormone treatment induces mammary gland hyperplasia in aging primates.

The decline of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) production during aging has been likened to the decrease in gonadal steroids in menopause. The repletion of GH/IGF-I levels in aging individuals is suggested to restore the lean tissue anabolism characteristic of youth. In addition to anabolic effects on musculo-skeletal tissues, GH also stimulates mammary glandular growth in some species, although its effects on primate mammary growth remain unclear. Some clinical observations implicate GH in human mammary growth, for example, gynecomastia occurs in some children trea
