3D-Printed Microelectrodes for Biological Measurement.

Microelectrodes are useful electrochemical sensors that can provide spatial biological monitoring. Carbon fiber has been by far the most widely used microelectrode; however, a vast number of different materials and modification strategies have been developed to broaden the scope of microelectrodes. Carbon composite electrodes provide a simple approach to making microelectrodes with a wide range of materials, but manufacturing strategies are complex. 3D printing can provide the ability to make microelectrodes with high precision. We used fused filament fabrication to print single strands of car…

An investigation of LET 'finger-prints' in Tradescantia.

Chromosome-type aberration scores, obtained in the Tradescantia microspore system following exposure to radiation, have been extracted from all significant papers since 1940, and augmented with unpublished results from this laboratory. The data include aberrations produced by X-, gamma-rays and neutrons, and cover an enormous range of qualities, doses, dose-rates and ambient gas conditions. Two proposed LET 'finger-print' ratios were examined: Dicentrics/Centric-rings (D/R or F-ratio) and Total deletions/Dicentrics+Centric-rings. There was no significant effect of LET on either of these. Furth

Effects of printing path and material components on mechanical properties of 3D-printed polyether-ether-ketone/hydroxyapatite composites.

Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) exhibits excellent mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Three-dimensional (3D) printing of PEEK bone substitutes has been widely used in clinical application. However, the inertness of pure PEEK hinders its integration with the surrounding bone tissue. In this study, for the first time, PEEK/hydroxyapatite (HA) composite specimens were fabricated using fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology. PEEK/HA filaments with HA contents of 0-30 wt% were fabricated via mechanical mixing and extrusion. The HA distributions inside the composite matrix and the surfac…

Print-A-Punch: A 3D printed device to cut dumbbell-shaped specimens from soft tissue for tensile testing.

The failure behavior and mechanical properties of soft tissue can be characterized by conducting uniaxial tensile tests on small sectioned specimens, called test coupons. An ideal coupon geometry for tensile testing is a dumbbell shape (dog-bone), yet the cost and time required to fabricate custom steel punches to cut dumbbell-shaped coupons has hindered their universal application in biomechanics research. In this study, we developed an economical and reliable cutting device that can extract dumbbell-shaped coupons from soft biological tissue. The novel device, called Print-A-Punch, uses thre

3D-printed models in the courtroom: mock-jurors' perceptions and experiences of 3D-printed models of human skeletal remains.

The use of 3D-printed models of skeletal remains has notably enhanced jurors' comprehension of forensic evidence and skeletal trauma, enabling clearer interpretations and diminishing the confusion associated with expert terminology. However, the hands-on tactile sensory engagement with these highly realistic 3D-printed models of human remains could be more distressing than traditional passive modalities. In the first study, to qualitatively examine jurors' perceptions of 3D-printed skeletal remains as evidence, mock-juror participants read a written summary of a murder trial before interacting

Influence of Post-Printing Polymerization Time on the Elution of Residual Monomers and Water Sorption of 3D-Printed Resin Composite.

This study evaluated the effect of post-printing polymerization time on residual monomer elution and water sorption in a 3D-printed resin composite. Eighty samples were fabricated and assigned to four groups based on post-curing duration: 0, 20, 40, and 60 min. Each group was subdivided according to two storage conditions (distilled water and 75% ethanol-water solution), and evaluated at 1 and 7 days. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) quantified eluted monomers. Additionally, 40 specimens underwent a 4-month sorption/desorption cycle for water sorption and solubility assessment. Da…

Fabrication of 3D printed mutable drug delivery devices: a comparative study of volumetric and digital light processing printing.

Mutable devices and dosage forms have the capacity to dynamically transform dimensionally, morphologically and mechanically upon exposure to non-mechanical external triggers. By leveraging these controllable transformations, these systems can be used as minimally invasive alternatives to implants and residence devices, foregoing the need for complex surgeries or endoscopies. 4D printing, the fabrication of 3D-printed structures that evolve their shape, properties, or functionality in response to stimuli over time, allows the production of such devices. This study explores the potential of volu…
