Orthognathic surgical approach and partial glossectomy to a skeletal 3 adult open bite.

Combined orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery and partial glossectomy were simultaneously performed in an adult male patient with mandibular prognathism and open bite from the lower right to the left first molars. Total active treatment period was 15 months. During the retention period, a tooth positioner was given to obtain proper interdigitation from set-up models. The post-surgical occlusion has been stable without any complication of the mandible and the tongue.

Crouzon syndrome: clinico-radiological illustration of a case.

Crouzon syndrome, also called craniofacial dysostosis, is an autosomal dominant disorder with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Described by a French neurosurgeon in 1912, it is a rare genetic disorder characterized by premature closure of cranial sutures, midfacial hypoplasia, and orbital defects. Here, we report a case of this rare entity. The patient presented with brachycephaly, maxillary hypoplasia, exophthalmos, mandibular prognathism, along with dental and orbital abnormalities.

Intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy: a simple method to prevent medial trapping of the proximal fragment.

Intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) is a useful surgical procedure for mandibular setback in patients with mandibular prognathism or mandibular asymmetry. IVRO has some intraoperative complications, such as the medial trapping of the proximal segment. Several techniques have been described to overcome this problem, but none can prevent it. This technical report describes a method that prevents the medial trapping of the proximal segment during IVRO.

[Hyperplastic adenoids and growth of the facial skeleton].

A case of a 16-year old female patient with large hyperplastic adenoids is presented. The only subjective symptoms were blocked nasal ventilation and subsequent permanent mouth breathing for 10 years. Concomitant sinusitis and middle ear affection were absent. In addition a gothic palate with malocclusion due to prognathism was found. The possible relationship between hyperplastic adenoids, chronic mouth breathing and craniofacial growth is discussed.

Camouflage Orthodontic Treatment of a Severe Class III Malocclusion.

Class III malocclusion remains the most challenging occlusal problem to treat due to the complexity of the interrelationships of the underlying skeletal and dental structures. Camouflage orthodontic treatment is a preferred alternative method used to manage mild to moderate Class III malocclusion in nongrowing patients. The aim of this article was to demonstrate a camouflage orthodontic treatment of a 22-year-old female patient diagnosed as having a severe skeletal Class III malocclusion characterized by a straight facial profile, reverse overjet, crowded maxillary incisors, retrognathic maxil

Lower face asymmetry as a marker for developmental instability.

OBJECTIVES: Fluctuating asymmetries in the craniofacial skeleton have been shown to be predictive for mortality from degenerative diseases. We investigate whether lower face asymmetries are a potential marker for the developmental origins of health and disease. METHODS: The lower face of a representative sample of 6654 12- to 17-year old United States (US) adolescents (1966-1970, National Health Examination Survey III) was classified as asymmetric when the mandibular teeth occluded prognathically (forward) or retrognathically (backward) on one side of the face only. It was investigated whethe

[Congenital goiter in the neonatal foal. Two case reports. Zwei Fallberichte].

Two cases of an innate hyperplastic goiter in foals as well as the sonographic evaluation of the hyperplastic gland are presented. One foal displayed skeletal deformities in the form of a mandibular prognathism and forelimb contractures in addition to the swollen thyroid gland. Because of a poor prognosis, the animal was euthanized. The second foal was premature and displayed respiratory signs. Under symptomatic therapy, the goiter regressed within a few weeks.

Comparison of craniofacial morphology in individuals with and without hypodontia with a special focus on the number of congenitally missing teeth.

BACKGROUND: Hypodontia might negatively affect dental function and esthetics, what might affect patients' self-esteem, communication behavior, professional performance and thus quality of life. The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of number of congenital missing teeth on dentofacial features. METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 60 individuals with hypodontia (study group) and 40 individuals without hypodontia (control group) were analyzed. Patients in the study group were divided into two subgroups according to the number of missing teeth (group A with hypodontia 1 to 4 teeth and

[Morphology of the dorsal boundary of the hard palate in primates].

A comparison of the dorsal boundary of the hard palate among various primate species reveals three variations of form. The tendency towards intraspecific variation, particularly among the Prosimians and to a lesser degree in Simians, eliminates the possibility of a taxonomic interpretation. Tupaias show morphological characteristics which are considerably different from those of primates. The variation observed in this region is viewed in association with different functional parameters which may depend on the degree of prognathism.

Autosomal recessive syndrome of growth and mental retardation, seizures, retinal abnormalities, and osteodysplasia with similarity to the Gurrieri syndrome.

We report on two sibs, brother and sister, with a multiple congenital anomaly/mental retardation syndrome consisting of severe growth and mental retardation, seizures, retinal abnormalities, osteodysplasia, brachydactyly, prognathism, and dental malocclusion. These clinical findings were present in both patients and seem to be consistent with the phenotype of the Gurrieri syndrome. The new features described in these sibs could expand the clinical spectrum of the Gurrieri syndrome and confirm the existence of this rare autosomal recessive condition.

Orthodontic-surgical management of severe skeletal class iii malocclusion: A case report.

Skeletal Class III malocclusion possess a difficult challenge to treat for clinicians. They are multifactorial and include genetic and environmental factors. Early intervention of Class III needs orthopedic correction, whereas, in adults, orthodontic camouflage can be done to treat mild cases while severe skeletal discrepancies demand orthognathic surgery along with orthodontic therapy. In this case report, a case of mandibular prognathism with Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO) setback was presented.

Stereophotographic measurement of change in facial soft tissue morphology following surgery.

Changes in soft tissue morphology induced by surgery are generally analysed using midline profiles only, derived from photographs and cephalometric radiographs. Full face photographs supplement these records. Soft tissues and their changes can be measured in three dimensions using stereophotography. This report described how the three dimensional changes produced by facial surgery were measured for a patient undergoing surgery to the mandible.

[A contribution to the problem of reducing the size of the tongue for orthodontic purposes].

After a summary of the theoretic basis for the indication of an operative reduction of the tongue by the therapy of malocclusion, the results of the tests were individually analysed. A sure influence of the reduction of the tongue can only be proved for the averting of a threatening relapse after an operation of progenia. The ability of speech stayed without any influence in 12 cases and in 3 cases it got better or worse. The numerous late sequels in form and function of the tongue make it necessary to be carefully in indication of the reduction of the tongue by the therapy of malocclusion.

Simultaneous Surgical Correction of Skeletal Class III Dentofacial Deformity During Acute Management of Facial Fractures: Patient Selection and Surgical Technique.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular prognathism is a common dentofacial deformity in Asia. Treatment of such condition may vary from orthodontic camouflage to surgical orthodontics with orthognathic surgery depending on the severity of the condition. Because of the prominent position of the mandible, fractures involving different locations of the mandible commonly occur in maxillofacial trauma. Anatomical reduction of maxillofacial fractures and restoration of the pretraumatic occlusion are the primary goals of acute management of facial fractures. In patients with dentofacial deformity, simultaneous surgi…
