Cathodal tDCS of the Left Posterior Parietal Cortex Increases Proprioceptive Drift.

In aiming movements the limb position drifts away from the defined target after some trials without visual feedback, a phenomenon defined as proprioceptive drift (PD). There are no studies investigating the association between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and PD in aiming movements. Therefore, cathodal and sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) were applied to the left PPC concomitantly with the performance of movements with or without vision. Cathodal tDCS applied without vision produced a higher level of PD and higher rates of drift accumulation while it decreased peak ve

The intense desire for healthy limb amputation: A dis-proprioceptive neuropsychiatric disorder.

BACKGROUND: The first mention of a condition in which apparently nonpsychotic individuals have a strong, unrelenting desire to amputate ≥1 of their healthy limbs was published nearly 4 decades ago. Once dismissed as a paraphilia, the condition in recent years has been re-investigated with neurologic testing and imaging, yielding evidence suggesting it may be attributable to a neuroanatomical anomaly. METHODS: A literature review of data was conducted of recently published studies with pinprick testing, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/functional MRI imaging, magnetoencephalography, and interv

Stiffness and proprioceptive contributions of ankle braces and the influence of localized muscle fatigue.

Ankle braces are a common treatment to reduce ankle sprain recurrence among individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Bracing provides supplemental external joint stiffness and/or improved proprioceptive acuity. The goals of this study were to assess the effects of two ankle braces on joint position sense (JPS) and ankle stiffness, and determine whether bracing effects are reduced with localized muscle fatigue. Measures of JPS and ankle stiffness were obtained from participants with CAI (n=12) for three conditions (no brace, a neoprene wrap brace, and a semi-rigid brace), before and af

Proprioceptive impairments associated with knee osteoarthritis are not generalized to the ankle and elbow joints.

The mechanisms for proprioceptive changes associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA) remain elusive. Observations of proprioceptive changes in both affected knees and other joints imply more generalized mechanisms for proprioceptive impairment. However, evidence for a generalized effect remains controversial. This study examined whether joint repositioning proprioceptive deficits are localized to the diseased joint (knee) or generalized across other joints (elbow and ankle) in people with knee OA. Thirty individuals with right knee OA (17 female, 66±7 [mean±SD] years) of moderate/severe radiogra

Proprioceptive dysfunction in focal dystonia: from experimental evidence to rehabilitation strategies.

Dystonia has historically been considered a disorder of the basal ganglia, mainly affecting planning and execution of voluntary movements. T … motor problem, it turned out that sensory aspects are also fundamental, especially those related to proprioception. We outline experimental evidence for proprioceptive dysfunction in focal dystonia from intrinsic sensory abnormalities to impaired sensorimotor integration, which is the process by which sensory information is used to plan and execute volitional mo …

Proprioceptive changes in the contralateral knee joint following anterior cruciate injury.

Loss of proprioception following an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury has been well documented. We evaluated proprioception in both the injured and the uninjured limb in 25 patients with ACL injury and in 25 healthy controls, as assessed by joint position sense (JPS), the threshold for the detection of passive movement (TDPM) and postural sway during single-limb stance on a force plate. There were significant proprioceptive deficits in both ACL-deficient and uninjured knees compared with control knees, as assessed by the angle reproduction test (on JPS) and postural sway on single limb s…

Are proprioceptive-induced reflex seizures epileptically-enhanced stretch reflex manifestations?

In reflex seizures induced by proprioceptive stimuli, the activated network may be identified as a single anatomo-functional circuit; the sensory-motor network. These seizures may be considered as epileptically-enhanced stretch reflexes. Proprioceptive reflex epilepsies are a good example of the so-called "system epilepsies". We present three cases discussing the clinical features of such epilepsies. [Published with videosequences].

Reach adaptation and proprioceptive recalibration following exposure to misaligned sensory input.

Motor adaptation in response to a visuomotor distortion arises when the usual motor command no longer results in the predicted sensory output. In this study, we examined if exposure to a sensory discrepancy was sufficient on its own to produce changes in reaches and recalibrate the sense of felt hand position in the absence of any voluntary movements. Subjects pushed their hand out along a robot-generated fixed linear path (active exposure group) or were passively moved along the same path (passive exposure group). This fixed path was gradually rotated counterclockwise around the home position

Upper and lower extremity proprioceptive inputs modulate EMG activity of the trapezius.

Axial muscles like the trapezius have different reflexive and functional properties. The aim of this study was to analyze the long latency reflexes obtained from the trapezius by the electrical stimulation of upper and lower extremity peripheral nerves. Thirty-one healthy volunteers were included in the study. Surface EMG activity of both trapezius muscles was recorded and averaged after electrical stimulation of the median and peroneal mixed nerves. The recordings were performed during supine and erect posture in nine subjects to evaluate of the effect of postural differences on reflex respon

Internally driven control of reaching movements: a study on a proprioceptively deafferented subject.

We investigated the possibility of controlling reaching movements on the sole basis of central mechanisms, i.e., without peripheral feedback … n. We suggest that GL's trajectories reflect a deficit in interjoint coordination in the absence of proprioception.

Phobic postural vertigo: body sway during vibratory proprioceptive stimulation.

Phobic postural vertigo patients might rely more on proprioceptive than visual cues to regulate stance. We tested 14 phobic postural vertigo patients and 24 healthy subjects with posturography during quiet stance and periods of vibratory proprioceptive calf muscle stimulation, both with eyes open and closed. During quiet stance phobic postural vertigo patients showed higher torque variance than healthy subjects, especially above 0.1 Hz. Vibratory proprioceptive stimulation increased the differences between healthy subjects and phobic postural vertigo patients. The patients were less able to us

Interactions between extraocular proprioceptive and visual signals in the superior colliculus of the cat.

1. The responses of units in the superficial layers of the superior colliculus to stretch of extrinsic ocular muscles (e.o.m.) and to visual stimuli, delivered singly and paired at various inter-stimulus intervals, were studied in chloralose-anaesthetized cats. 2. Most units responded to visual stimuli and about half also gave phasic excitatory responses to stretch of e.o.m. 3. Signals from the e.o.m. of each eye reach both superior colliculi; only those in the colliculus ipsilateral to the e.o.m. stretched were studied in detail. 4. A variety of control experiments provided evidence that the

[The role of vestibular and proprioceptive afferent pathways in the reaction to pushing (author's transl)].

The reaction to pushing was studied in 6 normal subjects and 3 patients with bilateral peripheral vestibular lesions. The reaction to pushing was tested on the anterior tibial and soleus, by modifying the proprioceptive afferent impulses. The respective parts of the vestibular, proprioceptive, visual components, and of a sudden, start are analyzed; the afferent impulses obtain information from the initial posture and modulate the relative importance of these different factors at a supra-segmentary level.

Effects of compression pants on hip proprioception and dynamic balance during intermittent half-marathon running.

The study aims to examine how the compression pants affect hip proprioception and dynamic balance at three consecutive 7 km intervals in half marathon runners. Eighteen runners completed an intermittent treadmill half-marathon (3 × 7 km segments with standardized 5-min breaks) wearing either full-length compression pants or normal shorts. Hip extension proprioception, dynamic balance, RPE, heart rate and blood lactate were assessed before running and after each 7 km portion. There were no differences between the compression pants and normal shorts in terms of RPE, heart rate and blood lactate.…

How does a motor or cognitive dual-task affect our sense of upper limb proprioception?

BACKGROUND: Daily upper limb activities require multitasking and our division of attention. How we allocate our attention can be studied using dual-task interference (DTi). Given the vital role proprioception plays in movement planning and motor control, it is important to investigate how conscious upper limb proprioception is impacted by DTi through cognitive and motor interference. PURPOSE: To examine how dual-task interference impacts conscious upper limb proprioception during active joint repositioning tasks (AJRT). METHODS: Forty-two healthy participants, aged between 18 and 35, took pa…
