Comparing the new concept of impairment in personality functioning with borderline personality disorder: differential psychosocial and psychopathological correlates in a clinical adolescent sample.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is an established diagnosis in adolescence with high comorbidity and psychosocial impairment. With the introduction of the alternative model for personality disorders in DSM-5 (AMPD), personality functioning is operationalized using the Level of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS), which has been shown to be associated with severity of personality pathology. The present study aimed at examining differential psychopathological and psychosocial correlates of LPFS and BPD. A total of 526 adolescent in- and outpatients were interviewed with the STiP-5.1 (LPFS

OBJECTIVE: Knee arthroplasty (KA) is an effective and cost-effective treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Despite high surgical success rates, as many as 25% of patients report compromised postoperative functioning, persistent pain, and reduced quality of life. The purpose of this study was to assess the predictive value of psychological factors in health functioning and quality of life, during a 6-month period after KA. DESIGN: A prospective observational study. SETTING: Surgery at two hospitals and follow-up was carried out through the domiciliary rehabilitation service. SUBJECTS:

The Relationship between Health Disparities, Psychosocial Functioning and Health Outcomes in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Stem Cell Transplant Populations: Recommendations for Clinical Care.

Not only do racial and ethnic minority children and adolescents with chronic illness experience disparities in health status and health outcomes, they also experience significant healthcare disparities, including differences in healthcare coverage, access to care, and quality of care. It is well known that the interaction between psychosocial functioning, health behaviors and ethnic and racial disparities, ultimately leads to worse health and psychosocial outcomes in pediatric and AYA chronic illness patient populations, including increased rates of morbidity and mortality. Investigating the i…

High occurrence of sleep problems in survivors of a childhood brain tumor with neurocognitive complaints: The association with psychosocial and behavioral executive functioning.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood brain tumors are prone to sleep and neurocognitive problems. Effective interventions to improve neurocognitive functioning are largely lacking. In general, sleep problems are negatively related to neurocognitive functioning, but this relationship is unclear in survivors of childhood brain tumors. Therefore, the occurrence of sleep problems, potential risk factors, and the relation between sleep and executive functioning were evaluated. PROCEDURE: Baseline data of a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of neurofeedback were used. Childhood brain t

Family factors as moderators of the association between specific cognitive domains and psychosocial, academic, and adaptive functioning outcomes in youth with spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the direct and interactive effects of cognitive and family factors on psychosocial, academic, and adaptive functioning outcomes in youth with spina bifida (SB). METHODS: Participants included 41 families of youth with SB (ages 3-16 years old). Caregivers reported on child functioning (i.e., executive, psychosocial, and adaptive functioning), as well as family factors, such as family environment, marital adjustment, caregiver distress, and parenting stress. Youth completed performance-based assessments of vocabulary and academic functioning. Dire

Efficacy of psychosocial interventions on social functioning in individuals with childhood maltreatment experiences: a protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Background: Several psychosocial interventions have shown promising effects in treating people affected by childhood maltreatment (CM); however, their comparative efficacy on social functioning remains largely unknown. To address this issue, a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) will be conducted to investigate the comparative efficacy of different psychosocial interventions on global social functioning and specific domains of social functioning, including behavioural, emotional, cognitive and physiological processes. We aim to develop a hierarchical ranking of existing psychosoc

Persistence of cognitive impairment and its negative impact on psychosocial functioning in lithium-treated, euthymic bipolar patients: a 6-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional studies report that cognitive impairment is associated with poor psychosocial functioning in euthymic bipolar patients. There is a lack of long-term studies to determine the course of cognitive impairment and its impact on functional outcome. Method A total of 54 subjects were assessed at baseline and 6 years later; 28 had DSM-IV TR bipolar I or II disorder (recruited, at baseline, from a Lithium Clinic Program) and 26 were healthy matched controls. Psychosocial correlates of seizure frequency in Functional/Dissociative Seizures (FDS): A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Seizure frequency is commonly used as a primary outcome and proxy for severity in functional/dissociative seizures (FDS), despite uncertainties about its validity and reliability. This systematic review aimed to describe how FDS frequency has been measured and to identify its correlates. METHODS: Following pre-registration, PsycInfo, MEDLINE, CINAHL and Cochrane Reviews were searched using terms relating to FDS, seizure frequency and/or severity, and correlates. Eligible studies reported correlational data between FDS frequency and psychosocial variables in adults. Correlates were

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of low sexual desire (LSD) and identify associated factors in postpartum women receiving care in a public healthcare setting. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary university hospital in Brazil b

Development of working memory, processing speed, and psychosocial functions in patients with pediatric cancer.

Many patients after pediatric cancer suffer from long-term cognitive difficulties. This study investigates the development of cognitive and psychosocial functions between diagnosis and one year after cancer treatment and reveals insight into the association between cognitive and psychosocial development and various risk factors. This retrospective clinical record review included fifty-seven patients, aged 4-16 years, that were examined at the beginning of the cancer treatment (T1) and one year after cancer treatment (T2) to evaluate the development of working memory (WM), processing speed (PS)

Psychosocial factors associated with pain and sexual function in women with Vulvodynia: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Vulvodynia is a prevalent chronic vulval pain condition affecting 10%-28% of women, and significantly impacting their health and quality of life. It is currently poorly understood and biomedical treatments achieve only modest benefits for pain and sexual functioning. A wider psychosocial conceptualization of this condition may improve outcomes. There is currently no coherent understanding of how psychosocial factors may contribute to outcomes in Vulvodynia. The aim of this review is to identify and systematically review psychosocial factors associated with pain and se
