The objective of GnRH agonist treatment in precocious puberty is to block pubertal development, and to reduce the action of sex steroids on bone maturation in order to restore normal long-term growth of the skeleton. Tuberous sclerosis complex has been associated though infrequently, with abnormalities in the endocrine tissues. Alterations in thyroid function, in patients with tuberous sclerosis have been reported rarely. During the last three decades the psychological consequences of precocious puberty have received considerable attention. The nature and shortcomings of relevant studies are described. It is emphasized that specialized counselling and guidance of families with children who have to cope with precocious puberty is important, since it often contributes to an appropriate behaviour adjustment without the development of psychiatric symptomatology. Guidelines for medical service and psychological management are provided.

Data from 31 children, 23 females (74.2%) and eight males (25.8%) with precocious puberty were analysed. They included 19 cases with central precocious puberty, 5 with premature thelarche, 5 with premature adrenarche and 1 each with adrenal adenoma and virilizing hepatoblastoma. Their clinical and hormonal profile and the treatment outcome are briefly discussed.

The IQ of 52 girls with precocious puberty (mean age 9.5 +/- 2.8 years) was compared with that of 51 normal matched control subjects (mean age 9.7 +/- 2.8 years) and with that of eight girls with fast puberty (onset at normal age but accelerated advancement). A male infant had precocious puberty and hamartoma of the CNS. Signs of puberty appeared and progressed from 6 months of age. A computed tomographic scan disclosed an interpedunculary tumor. A craniotomy was successfully performed at 11/2 years of age, and 90% of the tumor was removed. Histologically, the tissue was identified as a hypothalamic hamartoma. Pubertal development stopped. The patient is now 4 years 9 months old and well.
