Is 5-HT a mediator in the motor control of the feline pylorus?

Since serotonin (5-HT) is a potent spasmogen of pyloric smooth muscle in vivo, and since it is released on electrical stimulation of extrins … n the myenteric plexus and circular muscle layer but also in vascular nerve terminals of the feline pylorus. The function of these tryptamine-containing nerves is still unclear.

[Evolutionary modifications in the structure of the pylorus as a function of age in man].

Gross anatomical and histological studies of the pylorus were undertaken on 30 specimens from subjects with an age ranging from few gestational weeks to 80 years old. The authors looked especially for muscular, vascular and neurological modifications related to the age which could possibly correlate with various disorders.

Selectivity of histamine for the proximal muscle loop of the cat pylorus.

Most drugs stimulate tonic and phasic muscular activity of the gastroduodenal junction to similar degrees except for histamine which enhances purely phasic contractions. The present study examined whether this selective histamine effect is due to a preferential action of histamine on the proximal muscle loop of the pylorus (PPL) which, unlike the distal loop (DPL), generates mostly phasic contractions. Strips were cut so as to represent the mechanical activity of muscle from the antrum, the PPL and the DPL of the cat stomach. All strips responded to acetylcholine with a combination of tonic an…

[Functional behavior patterns of the pylorus in duodeno-gastric reflux].

There are relations between function of the pylorus and the appearance of duodeno-gastric reflux. However, much speaks for the fact that the pylorus alone is not able to prevent duodeno-gastric reflux. In the problem of the causes of reflux also the motoric behaviour of the upper duodenum must be taken into consideration.

Gallstone Ileus Decades after Cholecystectomy and Pylorus-Preserving Whipples.

We report a case of small bowel obstruction due to gallstone ileus found in a patient with previous pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure). Investigation by computed tomography of the abdomen showed a transition point in the midjejunum due to a radioopaque intraluminal mass. Following resuscitation, the patient underwent laparotomy to remove the offending mass from the midjejunum. Subsequent stone analysis confirmed a cholesterol-rich gallstone. This is thus the first description of gallstone ileus following Whipple procedure. The rarity of this presentation and a literature review is pre

Bouveret Syndrome: When a Stone Cannot Pass the Pylorus.

Bouveret syndrome, a rare cause of intestinal obstruction, occurs by passage of a gallstone through a cholecystoduodenal fistula into the intestinal lumen. Presenting symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In some cases, chronic symptoms result in weight loss. Typically, the syndrome is diagnosed via x-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography. Treatment options are endoscopic or surgical. Endoscopic approaches include mechanical lithotripsy, electrohydraulic lithotripsy, stone extraction, laser lithotripsy, extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy, and/or duodenal stenting. When stone f

The Vertical Array Reconstruction Technique in Pylorus-Preserving Pancreatoduodenectomy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We describe a new reconstruction method of duodenojejunal anastomosis, the "vertical array reconstruction" (VAR) technique, following pylorus-preserving pancreatoduodenectomy (PPPD). METHODS: The VAR technique aligns the stomach, duodenum, and jejunal loop vertically along the body's longitudinal axis. It was performed in 120 consecutive patients (between June 2008 and October 2015) who underwent PPPD. We evaluated the incidence of delayed gastric emptying (DGE). RESULTS: The incidence of DGE was 1.7% (n = 2). The proposed clinical grading classified these 2 cases of DGE as …

Retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma resected by a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy.

A retroperitoneal hemangioma is a rare disease. We report on the diagnosis and treatment of a retroperitoneal hemangioma which had uncommonly invaded into both the pancreas and duodenum, thus requiring a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PpPD). A 36-year-old man presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. An enhanced computed tomography scan without contrast enhancement revealed a 12 cm × 9 cm mass between the pancreas head and right kidney. Given the high rate of malignancy associated with retroperitoneal tumors, surgical resection was performed. Intraoperatively, the tumor was i…
