Effect of chlorfenapyr on cypermethrin-resistant Culex pipiens pallens Coq mosquitoes.

Chlorfenapyr is a promising pyrrole insecticide with a unique mechanism of action that does not confer cross-resistance to neurotoxic insecticides. The effect of chlorfenapyr on pyrethorid-resistant Culex pipiens pallens Coq (Diptera: Culicidae) has not been fully investigated under laboratory conditions. In this study, cypermethrin-resistant C. p. pallens exhibited 376.79-fold and 395.40-fold increase in resistance to cypermethrin compared with susceptible strains after exposure for 24 and 48h, respectively. Larvae and adults were tested for susceptibility using dipping, topical, and impregna

Pyrethroid susceptibility in natural populations of the Anopheles punctulatus group (Diptera: Culicidae) in Papua New Guinea.

The development of insecticide resistance has compromised mosquito control efforts in many parts of the world. Papua New Guinea (PNG) has a long history of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) use and currently distributes pyrethroid-treated nets for malaria control. This study is the first to investigate the status of pyrethroid resistance in the Anopheles punctulatus group, the major malaria and filariasis vectors of PNG. The study used World Health Organization standard susceptibility bioassays to detect knockdown phenotypes and a novel nested polymerase chain reaction to detect the knockd

Behavioral responses of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) exposed to deltamethrin and possible implications for disease control.

Behavioral responses of nine Aedes aegypti (L.) strains, six from recent field collections and three from the long-established laboratory colonies, were tested under laboratory-controlled conditions by using an excito-repellency test system. All nine strains showed significant behavioral escape responses when exposed to deltamethrin at the standard field dose (0.02 g/m2), regardless of background insecticide susceptibility status (susceptible or tolerant/resistant). Insecticide contact irritancy played a predominate role in overall female mosquito escape responses, whereas noncontact repellenc

Thermal decomposition and isomerization of cis-permethrin and beta-cypermethrin in the solid phase.

The stability to heart of cis-permethrin and beta-cypermethrin in the solid phase was studied and the decomposition products identified. Samples heated at 210 degrees C in an oven in the dark showed that, in the absence of potassium chlorate (the salt present in smoke-generating formulations of these pyrethroids), cis-permethrin was not isomerized, although in the presence of that salt, decomposition was greater and thermal isomerization occurred. Other salts of the type KXO3 or NaXO3, with X being halogen or nitrogen, also led to a considerable thermal isomerization. Heating the insecticides

Resistance of ruminal microorganisms to supermethrin.

The effect of the pyrethroid insecticide supermethrin on the growth and cyanogenic activity of 8 ruminal bacterial species (S bovis A0 24/85, S xylosus 310, E faecium 2, L plantarum, M elsdenii 4MJ, S ruminantium A17, B succinogenes 16J and B ruminicola 3/3) in pure culture was examined. Bacteria grown in 0.66 and 6.6 mg supermethrin/ml had similar growth rates and resistance to supermethrin. Production of cyanide from supermethrin occurred by all examined strains of ruminal bacteria, but the enzyme activity varied considerably with species and with the supermethrin concentrations.

Laboratory and field trials of permethrin-treated cotton used as nesting material to control fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) on cricetid rodents.

Upholstery cotton treated with four different concentrations (0.25-2.0%) (2,500-20,000 ppm) of an aqueous permethrin solution, used as nesting material by white mice, was laboratory-tested against the potential plague vectors Oropsylla montana (Baker), Thrassis bacchi (Rothschild), and Orchopeas howardi (Baker) and found highly effective (P less than 0.001) for 1 yr. Similarly treated cotton gauze was tested under ambient and 75% RH and was found to be highly effective (P less than 0.001) in both environments for 1 yr. A separate test determined that the LD50 of permethrin-treated cotton was l

Insecticide resistance status predetermines behavioural responses and oviposition fitness in Anopheles coluzzii.

Behavioural resistance is one of the major public health challenges facing planned vector control strategies involving insecticides. Understanding the behaviour of mosquitoes holistically when exposed to insecticides could be key to adding up to the fight against resistance. This study evaluated the behavioural responses and oviposition fitness of male and female Anopheles coluzzii exposed to selected pyrethroids, including lambda-cyhalothrin (0.05%), permethrin (0.75%), and DDT (4%). Male and female mosquitoes, aged three to five days, were exposed in eight replicates to selected insecticides

Bifenthrin exacerbates ulcerative colitis via immunotoxicity: network toxicology and experimental validation reveal novel therapeutic targets.

Bifenthrin (BF) is a widely used pyrethroid insecticide and is recognized as an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC). Accumulating evidence indicates that long-term exposure to BF can induce a variety of adverse health outcomes. However, its potential role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) remains elusive. In this study, we integrated data from multiple databases-including the Comparative Toxicogenomics Database (CTD), TargetNet, GeneCards, SwissTargetPrediction, and STITCH-to predict potential molecular targets of BF. UC-associated genes were compiled from GeneCards, Online Mendel

Control failure risk, resistance and enzymatic activity of neurotoxic insecticides in Brazilian populations of Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae).

BACKGROUND: Leucoptera coffeella is a key pest of coffee crops in Brazil, causing significant damage by mining coffee leaves. Reports of reduced effectiveness of chemical control measures highlight the need to investigate potential resistance mechanisms. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of control failure, resistance levels and enzymatic activity in Brazilian field populations of L. coffeella exposed to neurotoxic insecticides. RESULTS: A total of 35 field populations of L. coffeella were collected and tested in the laboratory using filter paper discs treated with insecticide solutions.

Cognitive effects of chlorantraniliprole alone or in mixture with a pyrethroid in honey bees.

Chlorantraniliprole is a diamide insecticide targeting insect ryanodine receptors, which are involved in intracellular calcium release in neurons and muscles. In turn, this calcium release triggers neurotransmitter exocytosis and muscle contraction. Despite the presence of these receptors within neurons, possible effects of this insecticide on cognitive function have not been addressed yet. Honey bees are vital pollinators and serve as a valuable model for studying insect cognition, through the use of appetitive learning. Here, we assessed the sublethal effects of chlorantraniliprole on bees'

Pyrethroid resistance intensity and mechanisms in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (Diptera: Culicidae) from Oyo State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) is increasing across Nigeria and threatens the effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and other pyrethroid-based interventions across Nigeria. This study quantified resistance levels, intensity, and metabolic contributions in An. gambiae s.l. populations across ecologically distinct zones of Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria, to generate evidence for locally tailored vector control strategies. METHODS: Between May and September 2018, immature stages of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato were collected from six L

Hierarchical discrimination of pyrethroid types and varieties using a ceria nanozyme array with machine learning.

The toxicity and environmental impact of pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) are closely related to their chemical structures and are particularly influenced by the presence or absence of a cyano group (Type I/Type II). Current rapid detection methods are unable to achieve hierarchical identification of PYRs, from broad class discrimination down to single-compound identification. In this work, by screening nanozymes with different ligand types, four cerium-based nanozymes bearing aromatic carboxylic acid ligands that exhibited significant responses to PYRs were selected, and a four-channel colorimetr

Influence of time of day and insecticide treatment on the abundance of Culiseta melanura (Diptera: Culicidae) in resting boxes.

Frequent use of resting boxes by Culiseta melanura (Coquillett) during the day-time may offer the opportunity for use of these artificial resting sites as delivery substrates for insecticides to manage populations of this eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) vector. In field studies at EEEV-endemic foci in southwestern Michigan, abundance in black-painted resting boxes of adult male and female Cs. melanura varied within the 24-h diel cycle, by whether the interiors of the boxes were treated with a microencapsulated formulation of lambda cyhalothrin (Demand CSTM), and from before to after t

Assessing the Repellency of an Insecticide-Fungicide Combination to Bees Using Bioacoustics.

Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and bees have a mutually beneficial relationship where nectar is exchanged for pollination service, which may enhance seed yield. However, pesticide use on soybeans during flowering could disrupt this relationship by harming bees and therefore reducing the yield benefits from pollinatiors. This study examined how pesticide applications during flowering affect bee foraging and soybean yield, focusing on application timing (mid-morning vs. mid-day) and flowering stage (R3-full bloom vs. R5-late/end of bloom), compared to an untreated control. To do this, an expe

Thymol enhances the acaricidal effects of cypermethrin through the disruption of oocyte development in Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae).

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is one of the most important ectoparasites in tropical and subtropical regions. Synthetic pyrethroids are widely used to control this tick, although the selection of resistant populations is a worldwide concern. Thymol, a natural monoterpene, alone or combined with other compounds, has shown efficacy against tick species. In R. microplus engorged females, thymol increases cypermethrin concentration in various tissues by enhancing its penetration at the cuticular level. Data on internal organ histopathological changes from the thymol-cypermethrin combinat

Comparative toxicity and enzymatic detoxification responses in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to two insecticides.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), poses a significant threat to food security, necessitating effective management strategies. While chemical control remains a primary approach, understanding the toxicity and detoxification mechanisms of different insecticides is crucial. In this study, we conducted leaf-dipping bioassays to assess the toxicity of quinalphos and beta-cypermethrin·emamectin benzoate (β-cyp·EMB) on S. frugiperda larvae. Additionally, we assessed the response of alterations in CarE, GST, MFO, and AChE activities to sublethal concentrati
