Persistent quadriceps muscle weakness is common after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The mechanisms underlying these chronic strength deficits are not clear. This study examined quadriceps strength in people 2-15 years post-ACL reconstruction and tested the hypothesis that chronic quadriceps weakness is related to levels of voluntary quadriceps muscle activation, antagonistic hamstrings moment, and peripheral changes in muscle. Knee extensor strength and activation were evaluated in 15 ACL reconstructed and 15 matched uninjured control subjects using an interpolated triplet t

Atrophy and fatty infiltration are important causes of muscle weakness in inclusion body myositis (IBM). Muscle weakness can also be caused by reduced specific force; i.e. the amount of force generated per unit of residual muscle tissue. This study investigates in vivo specific force of the quadriceps and ex vivo specific force of single muscle fibers in patients with IBM. We included 8 participants with IBM and 12 healthy controls, who all underwent quantitative muscle testing, quantitative MRI of the quadriceps and paired muscle biopsies of the quadriceps and tibialis anterior. Single muscle

Electromyographic studies have been carried out on the quadriceps and deltoid muscles of a number of healthy parents of children with infantile spinal muscular atrophy (types I and II) and the results compared with those obtained in healthy controls of the same sex. The results indicated an increase in mean amplitude of action potentials in quadriceps and deltoid muscles in both fathers and mothers (statistically significant in the quadriceps in the latter) of children with type I spinal muscular atrophy (Werdnig-Hoffmann disease). Increase in the mean amplitude in the quadriceps and deltoid m

It is not clear whether the strength or endurance of thigh muscles (quadriceps and hamstring) is positively or negatively correlated with the adduction moment of osteoarthritic knees. This study therefore assessed the relationships between the strength and endurance of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and adduction moment in osteoarthritic knees and evaluated predictors of the adduction moment. The study cohort comprised 35 patients with unilateral medial osteoarthritis and varus deformity who were candidates for open wedge osteotomy. The maximal torque (60°/sec) and total work (180°/sec)

(1) Background: Hemophilic knee arthropathy is characterized by a loss of muscle mass and decreased strength of the quadriceps muscle. The visualization of movement aims to favor the recruitment of the motor system in the same premotor and parietal areas, as would happen with the active execution of the observed action. The aim was to evaluate changes in quadriceps activation in patients with hemophilic knee arthropathy following immersive VR visualization of knee extension movements. (2) Methods: We recruited 13 patients with severe hemophilia A and knee arthropathy. Patients underwent a 15 m

BACKGROUND: Although muscle quality evaluations are currently considered important for diagnosing sarcopenia, data from the general population are lacking. This study used mid-thigh computed tomography measurements to evaluate age-related and sex-related differences in quadriceps femoris muscle quality and mass and their relationships with knee extension strength (KES).
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from 520 Japanese individuals (273 men and 247 women, mean age: 63.1 ± 10.6 years) were analysed. Mass and quality were assessed using quadriceps cross-sectional areas (CSAs) and computed tomograp

OBJECTIVE: To compare cross-sectional and longitudinal side-differences in thigh muscle anatomical cross-sectional areas (ACSAs), muscle strength, and specific strength (strength/ACSA), between knees with early radiographic change vs knees without radiographic knee osteoarthritis (RKOA), in the same person.
DESIGN: 55 (of 4796) Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) participants fulfilled the inclusion criteria of early RKOA in one limb (definite tibiofemoral osteophytes; no radiographic joint space narrowing [JSN]) vs no RKOA (no osteophyte; no JSN) in the contralateral limb. ACSAs of the thigh mus

BACKGROUND: Factors involved in the regulation of muscle mass in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are still poorly understood. Comparing the signalisation involved in muscle mass regulation between two muscles with different levels of activation within the same subjects is an interesting strategy to tease out the impact of local (muscle activity) versus systemic factors in the regulation of muscle mass. A study was undertaken to measure and compare the protein levels of p-AKT, AKT, Atrogin-1, p-p70S6K, p-4E-BP1, p-GSK3β as well as the mRNA expression of Atrogin-1, MuRF1 and FoxO-1

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other chronic diseases such as heart failure are accompanied by skeletal muscle alterations that further enhance morbidity and mortality in affected individuals. Several studies have highlighted important structural and biochemical modifications in limb and respiratory muscles in COPD. Reviewing the similarities and differences between the two most studied muscles in COPD, the quadriceps and the diaphragm, may be helpful in providing important clues about the mechanisms underlying muscle changes associated with this disease. Although oxidative s

Persons with good recovery of function following their initial poliomyelitis are now, more than 30 years later, experiencing new weakness, fatigue, and muscle pain. The likelihood of muscle overuse being the cause of this late functional loss was investigated by dynamic electromyography (EMG) and foot-switch stride analysis in 34 symptomatic patients. Manual testing grouped the muscles, with strong (S) encompassing Grades Good (G) and Normal (N) while weak (W) included Fair plus (F+) to zero (0). After testing quadriceps and calf strength, the patients fell into one of four classes: strong qua

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a catabolic condition associated with muscle wasting and dysfunction, which associates with morbidity and mortality. There is a need for simple techniques capable of monitoring changes in muscle size with disease progression and in response to interventions aiming to increase muscle mass and function. Ultrasound is one such technique; however, it is unknown how well changes in muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) measured using ultrasound relate to changes in whole muscle volume measured using magnetic resonance imaging. We tested whether rectus femoris

BACKGROUND: The use of quadriceps tendon autograft for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) has substantially increased in popularity. Advantages include similar clinical outcomes to other autografts and greater intra-articular tendon volume. However, injury to the quadriceps muscle during graft harvest may compromise quadriceps recovery, which reduces clinical outcomes. Females have been identified as being at higher risk of poor quadriceps recovery after all soft tissue quadriceps tendon ACLR, with 61% of females reported to be unable to achieve terminal extension 6 weeks a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the change in hamstring (H):quadriceps (Q) ratio following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture during isokinetic knee extension and flexion at 30 degrees of flexion which is important for knee dynamic function.
METHODS: A study was performed in 25 male complete unilateral ACL ruptures. Isokinetic concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring muscle tests in both the deficient knees and intact knees were performed at 60°/s, respectively. At 30 degrees of flexion, the average torque of quadriceps and hamstring, Qe:Qc ratios (ratios of eccentric quadriceps to conc

Muscle strains are common injuries in Australian football and other sports involving sprinting. Between 1992 and 1999, 83,503 player-matches in the Australian Football League were analyzed for risk of muscle strain injuries using logistic regression analysis. There were 672 hamstring, 163 quadriceps, and 140 calf muscle strain injuries. All three types of muscle strains were associated with significant risk factors. For all injuries, the strongest risk factor was a recent history of that same injury and the next strongest risk factor was a past history of the same injury. History of one type o

It is the hypothesis of the senior author (GAA) that high circumference measurements are not an accurate reflection of thigh muscle cross-sectional area or muscle strength after standard rehabilitation following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Likewise, normal quadriceps femoris strength is not achieved in these patients despite aggressive rehabilitation. The purpose of our study was to quantify thigh muscle size and strength and correlate thigh circumference, muscle cross-sectional area by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and isokinetic strength in our patients. Thirty-three patie

Two cases of quadriceps amyotrophy, probably of chronic neurogenic origin are reported. Only the knee jerks were diminished, the calves hypertrophic, and the serum creatine kinase level very high in one case, and there were neurogenic electromyographic abnormalities in the quadriceps. In the first case, biopsy of the quadriceps muscle revealed a neurogenic origin with hyalinized hypertrophic fibres. CT scan showed abnormalities not only in the quadriceps but also in the sartorius, gracilis and gastrocnemius muscles. A second biopsy specimen from the gastrocnemius muscle showed histological fin

BACKGROUND: Low muscle mass is associated with adverse outcomes following hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Computed tomography (CT) is a gold standard approach to measuring skeletal muscle but is associated with radiation exposure and no longer routinely performed in all patients before HCT. Alternative methods are needed for early identification, intervention, and serial evaluation of low muscle mass after HCT. Optimal methods should be portable and readily accessible. We thus evaluated the correlation between quadriceps muscle ultrasound (US), whole-body bioelectrical impedance anal

We investigated the efficacy of different frequencies and intensities of magnetic stimulation for activating the quadriceps muscles; a painless method for stimulating the quadriceps would be useful in the rehabilitation of patients who have difficulty in voluntarily activating their muscles after injury or surgery. Eleven subjects underwent magnetic stimulation of the femoral nerve over a range of frequencies and intensities using a MagStim Rapid magnetic stimulator. Magnetic stimulation at 30 Hz at 80% of the power output of the stimulator used was capable of generating 72% of quadriceps maxi

BACKGROUND: Quadriceps dysfunction is ubiquitous after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR). Addressing quadriceps dysfunction is crucial to improve function, reduce the reinjury risk, and maintain long-term knee health. While deficits specific to the quadriceps are well documented, less is known about the effect of an ACL injury on other lower extremity muscle groups.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this exploratory analysis was to quantify and rank lower extremity muscle volume deficits using magnetic resonance imaging in collegiate football athletes after ACLR. It was

An open-configuration magnetic resonance imaging scanner was used to document patellar tracking abnormalities in 11 anterior cruciate ligament-injured knees. The contralateral normal knees were used as controls. Images were obtained with the quadriceps muscles at rest (knee flexion at 40 degrees, 25 degrees, and 10 degrees) and with the quadriceps muscles contracted (knee flexion at 40 degrees and 25 degrees). When the quadriceps muscles were at rest there were no differences in patellar alignment between the anterior cruciate ligament-injured knees and the contralateral normal knees. When the
