Low-dose and repeated exposure to nickel leads to bioaccumulation and cellular and metabolic alterations in quails.

Nickel (Ni) is a widespread environmental pollutant commonly released into effluent due to industrial activities, the use of fuels, or wastewater disposal. Many studies confirm the toxic effects of this heavy metal. However, there is a lack of knowledge and data on bioaccumulation patterns in tissues as well as cellular and molecular responses following the exposure of living organisms to Ni. In this study, Japanese quails were exposed to low (10 μg/L) and high (2000 μg/L) Ni concentrations in the form of nickel(II) chloride via drinking water. Sub-chronic exposure lasted 30 days while nominal

Natural infection ofBlastocystis ST6 among commercial quails (Coturnix coturnix) in Penang, Malaysia.

Blastocystis sp. is a unicellular, anaerobic intestinal protist regularly reported in humans and various animals worldwide. There seems to be little research on Blastocystis infection in poultry in Malaysia, and none on Blastocystis in quail specifically. In Malaysia, the consumption of quail meat and eggs is rapidly gaining popularity as a significant source of protein. It is, therefore, essential to explore the presence of Blastocystis in Malaysian quails in order to aid in the understanding of Blastocystis in this group of birds and their role in its transmission. Intestinal contents were c

Inhibition of the Nrf2/p38MAPK pathway involved in deltamethrin-induced apoptosis and fibrosis in quail kidney.

Deltamethrin (DLM) is a broad-spectrum and effective pyrethroid insecticide. However, DLM has good residual activity on most surfaces and many insects, so it poses a threat to the environment and health of animals and human. Exposure to DLM can cause kidney injury, but the mechanism is not well understood. Therefore, we investigated the possible mechanism of quail kidney injury induced by chronic exposure to different doses of DLM for 12 weeks. The results showed that chronic exposure to DLM induced apoptosis and fibrosis of quail kidney through the promotion of oxidative stress by down-regula

Histological and immunohistochemical studies of the proximal caecum and caecal tonsils of quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

The proximal caecum in quails consists of lymphoid and non-lymphoid structures. The caecal tonsils in the proximal part of the caecum are units of gut-associated lymphoid tissue in poultry. This study aimed to examine the histological characteristics of the proximal caecum, as well as compositions of dendritic cells (DCs) and antigen-presenting cells (APCs) in the caecal tonsil of quails. Tissue sections were stained with Crossman's triple, periodic acid-Schiff, Gordon and Sweet's silver, Congo red and methyl green-pyronin dyes, as well as immunohistochemically by the streptavidin-biotin-perox

Imidacloprid-induced liver fibrosis in quails via activation of the TGF-β1/Smad pathway.

Imidacloprid (IMI) is one of the most frequently used neonicotinoid insecticide, and its potential toxicity and environmental hazards have gradually attracted people's attention. Liver fibrosis caused by long-term inflammation or oxidative stress can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure, even death. However, the mechanism of liver fibrosis induced by neonicotinoid insecticide remains unclear. This study investigates whether IMI could induce liver fibrosis in quails and a potential mechanism. Our study used a quail 90-day IMI-induced liver fibrosis model. The results showed that IMI induced hist

The effects of phytosterols on the sexual behavior and reproductive function in the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica).

Phytosterols (PS) are plant origin sterols naturally found in many foods and added as food additives. Since 1950, PS have attracted considerable attention due to their ability to lower serum cholesterol and inhibit cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, recent studies have found that PS act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals in laboratory animals. Therefore, this study was aimed at finding the mechanism(s) for PS effects on the sexual behaviors and reproductive functions in male Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica). At 15 d of age, 30 male Japanese quails were randomly assigned to 3 gro

Survey on the effects of electron beam irradiation on chemical quality and sensory properties on quail meat.

INTRODUCTION: Irradiation is one of the intervention strategies for effective control of food-borne pathogen microorganisms, which reduces microbial load and extends the meat shelf life. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This experimental study was carried out on quail meat. Quail meat samples were treated with electron beam irradiation at doses of 0.5, 1, and 3 kGy and stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 15 days. Five days after irradiation, the chemical and organoleptic changes in the quail meat were evaluated for 15 days. Total volatile basic nitrogen and TBA were also measured to investigate chemical changes. R

Combined exposure of Japanese quails to cyanotoxins, Newcastle virus and lead: oxidative stress responses.

Wild birds are continually exposed to many anthropogenic and natural stressors in their habitats. Over the last decades, mass mortalities of wild birds constitute a serious problem and may possibly have more causations such as natural toxins including cyanotoxins, parasitic diseases, industrial chemicals and other anthropogenic contaminants. This study brings new knowledge on the effects of controlled exposure to multiple stressors in birds. The aim was to test the hypothesis that influence of cyanobacterial biomass, lead and antigenic load may combine to enhance the effects on birds, includin

Effect of one week of stress on emotional reactivity and learning and memory performances in Japanese quail.

Chronic stress is known to induce long term alterations of emotional behaviours as well as cognitive performances leading thereby to welfare or husbandry problems. These stress-induced consequences are observed following long periods of stress lasting from several weeks to several years. The current study examined whether a shorter period of stress (one week) produced similar impairing effects. Two-week old Japanese quail were either submitted to a series of aversive events over consecutive 8 days, at unpredictable times each day (treated animals) or left undisturbed (controls). Following the

The effect of cryopreservation process on morphology and fertilising ability of Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) spermatozoa.

Changes in the morphology and fertilising ability of Japanese quail spermatozoa were studied after semen dilution, equilibration and freezing-thawing process in order to determine the optimal diluent, cryoprotectant and the freezing-thawing method. Subsequent stages of quail semen cryopreservation caused significant decline in spermatozoa morphology and their ability to fertilise the ovum. Semen dilution with Lake's extender alone reduced the number of morphologically normal spermatozoa and decreased their fertilising ability. Dimethylacetamide (DMA) was the least detrimental but equilibration

Seasonal changes in adrenal and gonadal activity in the quail, Perdicula asiatica: involvement of the pineal gland.

The present study assessed annual adrenal gland activity in the Indian tropical Jungle bush quail, Perdicula asiatica. We also elucidated the role of the annual variations in gonadal steroids and melatonin in the regulation of its activity. Increasing day length (photoperiod), ambient temperature and rainfall are positively correlated with adrenal and gonadal functions, and inversely related to pineal gland activity. Pineal, adrenal and gonadal weights showed cyclical patterns relative to environmental factors, which were also correlated with plasma melatonin, corticosterone and gonadal steroi

Different influence of hypodynamy on calcium and phosphorus levels in bones of male and female Japanese quails.

The influence of long-term hypodynamy on the calcium and phosphorus levels was studied in the bones of Japanese quails. The hypodynamy evoked different changes in the calcium and phosphorus content in males and females. The calcium content in the marrow of femurs was only changed in the hens, while in cockerels it was significantly decreased in the upper part and marrow of the tibia. Furthermore, changes in the phosphorus content were observed only in the tibia of cockerels.

Vitamin A deficiency reduces the responsiveness of pineal gland to light in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Synthesis of melatonin in pineal gland is under the control of light environment. The recent finding of the presence of rhodopsin-like photopigment (pinopsin) and retinal in the avian pinealocytes has led to a hypothesis that vitamin A is involved in photoresponses of the pineal gland. We have thus analyzed the effect of vitamin A deficiency on the regulatory system of melatonin synthesis in the pineal gland of Japanese quail. Depletion of vitamin A from Japanese quails was attained by feeding them with a vitamin A-free diet supplemented with retinoic acid. In the vitamin A-deficient birds, di

The superior cervical ganglia are not necessary for entrainment or persistence of the pineal melatonin rhythm in Japanese quail.

The avian pineal exhibits a daily rhythm in the synthesis and secretion of the hormone, melatonin, which is involved in maintaining temporal order within the circadian system of some species. The pineal is richly innervated by sympathetic nerves which originate in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) and, in the chicken, these nerves play a role in generating the melatonin rhythm. In the Japanese quail, the pineal melatonin rhythm can be entrained by light perceived directly by the pineal or by light perceived by the eyes. The role of the sympathetic innervation of the pineal was investigated i

[The effect of water soluble trichloromonofluoromethane freon on the weight and proteins of the heart muscle in Japanese quail].

An experiment was conducted to study the effects of water-soluble trichloromonofluoromethane freon (F-11, CC13F) on the weight of heart and on the level of freely extractable proteins in the heart of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). After three-week sublethal exposure of Japanese quail to the effect of freon the heart weight of the tested birds was found to have markedly decreased (however, the total body weight of the birds did not decrease). The tested quail also showed pronounced changes in the concentration of two protein fractions (an increase in one, a decline in the other),
