Congenital and Traumatic Conditions of the Pediatric Hand: Overview for the Radiologist.

Alignment, longitudinal growth, and function of the musculoskeletal unit of the pediatric hand is complex due to the combination of open growth plates, ossification variations, and their relationship with finger tendinous and ligamentous attachments. This review presents the basics of normal development, acquired and congenital variations, and traumatic conditions of the pediatric hand from the perspective of the pediatric musculoskeletal radiologist and hand surgeon. This multimodality imaging article focuses on non-oncologic and non-rheumatologic conditions of the pediatric hand, inclusive o

Coronary computed tomography in emergencies: The importance of the radiologist's experience.

INTRODUCTION: Incorporating coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) in the hospital workup for suspected acute coronary syndrome requires appropriate skills for interpreting this imaging test. Radiologists' skills can affect the interobserver agreement in evaluating these studies. OBJECTIVE: To determine the interobserver agreement according to radiologists' experience in the interpretation of coronary CTA studies done in patients who present at the emergency department with acute chest pain and low-to-intermediate probability of acute coronary syndrome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We stud…

Pediatric Renovascular Hypertension: A Pediatric Interventional Radiologist's Perspective.

Renovascular hypertension (RVH) contributes close to one-fourth of the secondary etiologies of hypertension in children and a delay in diagnosis can result in adverse clinical outcomes. RVH in children is clinically silent with elevations in blood pressure measurements sometimes as its sole manifestation. Only a high index of suspicion by the clinician can prompt its detection. Despite the availability of other imaging modalities like ultrasound, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging, digital subtraction angiography is still considered the gold standard to make a diagnosis of RVH

[Coronary Artery Anomaly, What Radiologist Should Know?].

Cardiac CT is the most accurate tool for diagnosing and evaluating coronary artery anomalies. Coronary anomalies can often be observed as the number of cardiac CT scans increases. In this review article, we described the CT findings and clinical significance of coronary anomalies that radiologists should know. In particular, we described the dangerous anatomical findings of coronary anomalies on CT images in detail.

Lower Urinary Tract Injuries: A Guide for the Emergency Radiologist.

Traumatic lower urinary tract injuries are uncommon and mainly occur in patients with severe trauma and multiple abdominopelvic injuries. In the presence of other substantial injuries, bladder and urethral injuries may be overlooked and cause significant morbidity and mortality. Therefore, it is important that radiologists are familiar with mechanisms and injuries that are high risk for bladder and urethral trauma. We review the imaging findings associated with these injuries and the appropriate modalities and techniques to further evaluate the patient and accurately diagnose these injuries. C…

Facial swelling for the emergency radiologist-typical and atypical causes.

There are a wide variety of inflammatory, infectious, and cystic lesions which may lead patients to seek acute care for facial swelling. Computed tomography (CT) has become the mainstay for imaging in the urgent/emergent setting. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can also serve as a powerful problem solving tool in the modern era. As volume continues to increase, a wide variety of facial pathology will be encountered by the emergency radiologist. Recognition of both common and uncommon pathology will assist in diagnosis and value-based care. This article serves as an image-rich review

[French program of breast cancer screening: Radiologist viewpoint].

French program of breast cancer screening is implemented since15 years and results are in adequation with international guidelines except for participation. To answer to recurrent controversies about breast cancer screening, publications from National Institute of French cancer registry confirm the positive impact of screening on decreasing mortality for participating women. The harms of mammography (and not from screening) need to be communicated to the invited women to help them to make decision about participation but also the risk of worse prognosis in case of symptomatic cancer. The futur

A Radiologist's Guide to the Performance and Interpretation of Obstetric Doppler US.

Doppler US provides a unique window to the fetoplacental circulation, allowing assessment of fetal well-being. Doppler US of the umbilical artery is an integral component of managing the fetus with growth restriction; and Doppler US of the middle cerebral artery, as a noninvasive means of detecting fetal anemia, has revolutionized the management of pregnancies complicated by alloimmunization. Serial use of amniocentesis, with its attendant risks, has been replaced by serial Doppler US examinations. Invasive procedures are now reserved for the treatment of anemia with intrauterine transfusion.

Iatrogenic-related transplant injuries: the role of the interventional radiologist.

As advances in surgical techniques and postoperative care continue to improve outcomes, the use of solid organ transplants as a treatment for end-stage organ disease is increasing. With the growing population of transplant patients, there is an increasing need for radiologic diagnosis and minimally invasive procedures for the management of posttransplant complications. Typical complications may be vascular or nonvascular. Vascular complications include arterial stenosis, graft thrombosis, and development of fistulae. Common nonvascular complications consist of leaks, abscess formation, and str

Imaging in laparoscopic cholecystectomy--what a radiologist needs to know.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard treatment option for cholelithiasis. In order to properly assess for the complications related to the procedure, an understanding of the normal biliary anatomy, its variants and the normal postoperative imaging is essential. Radiologist must be aware of benefits and limitations of multiple imaging modalities in characterizing the complications of this procedure as each of these modalities have a critical role in evaluating a symptomatic post-cholecystectomy patient. The purpose of this article is describe the multi-modality imaging of normal bi

Fracture mimics on temporal bone CT: a guide for the radiologist.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to discuss and illustrate commonly visualized fissures and sutures in the temporal bone. This topic is important because a thorough knowledge of normal anatomy is necessary to avoid misinterpretation as fractures. CONCLUSION: Small normal anatomic fissures are now routinely visualized with the increasing use of MDCT in trauma patients. An awareness of these structures is required by radiologists interpreting studies with fine temporal bone slices to prevent erroneous interpretation.

Biological dosimetry in a group of radiologists by the analysis of dicentrics and translocations.

The results of a cytogenetic study carried out in a group of nine radiologists are presented. Chromosome aberrations were detected by fluorescence plus Giemsa staining and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Dose estimates were obtained by extrapolating the yield of dicentrics and translocations to their respective dose-effect curves. In seven individuals, the 95% confidence limits of the doses estimated by dicentrics did not include 0 Gy. The 99 dicentrics observed in 17,626 cells gave a collective estimated dose of 115 mGy (95% confidence limits 73-171). For translocations, five individuals …
